Dexter Silverbeak [Ready]

Recommended Posts

Name: Dexter Silverbeak

Gender: Male

Age: Adult

Species: Griffon [American Kestrel/Siberian Tiger]

Eye colour: Yellow-orange

Character colour: The main body is that of a Siberian Tiger, and thus is a majestic orange with black stripes along his body. His wings are a slate-blue colour. The bird portion of Dexter seems to seamlessly morph into the feline part. The neck and chest area have a gradient of lighter to darker orange, as the feathers turn to hair

Mane/Tail/Other: The top of the head is the same slate-blue as his wings, with the crown of his head starting the light orange to deeper orange. Under the chin is white before his chest, which is orange. Under his tear ducts are black bands

Physique: Large, even by griffon standards. Quite fit and fairly agile considering his size.

Residence: Canterlot, formerly Talonopolis (And still very much considers Talonopolis and Aquellia his home, and thinks of Canterlot merely as a place of work)

Occupation: Forensic scientist

Cutie Mark: N/A

Unique Traits: Dexter is highly observant and intelligent. He is quite capable and adept at deductive reasoning and can investigate crimes as well as study them and gather and connect and analyze evidence. He also has an eidetic memory

History: Dexter was born to an affluent scientific family in Talonopolis, the Silverbeaks. Because of this he was, of course, raised to be a scientist. He had every benefit a ruling family could give him, from the best education to books and tools to become the best scientist possible. Dexter really didn't mind all that though, because truth be told he loved science, all of it. Among his friends in school he was known as the nerd who at times preferred to stay home, go to his mother's laboratory or go stargazing with his father at the observatory. Still his friends accepted him for who he was, and the fact that they had a Silverbeak for a friend wasn't too shabby to them either. While he dragged them along on 'scientific' ventures (aka exploring forests to study flora and fauna) or just messing about doing stuff he wanted like looking at specimens under the microscope, his friends dragged him out to play games and sports. Surprisingly he wasn't terrible. In fact he was better than some of his athletic friends! No one really cared who was better than anyone else because in the end it was about having fun, and that is what they did.

Then an opportunity came knocking. His school announced they were going to be in a Science Fair, and the winner would get to go to Canterlot! Dexter chose to study mutations among fly populations. Apparently this was something nogriffon expected, as it was a study that was much more advanced for his current level (and barely studied before). He naturally won in Talonopolis, and was allowed to go to the science fair competition in Canterlot. It was an exciting day for him, and he was excited for the opportunity to, for lack of a better term, show off. He had beaten many other brilliant griffon entries and was certain he would win.

Unfortunately two days before judging his entire display was destroyed. He was devastated, but he wasn't going to take this laying down! He immediately set forth to find the culprit. He had two days, and at the very least the culprit would not win by cheating. So he took hoofprints, hair samples, studied the area. Slowly he began piecing together what had happened and talking to ponies he had narrowed the suspects. Finally after an analysis of everything he found, and a positive hair and hoof identification he brought his findings to the committee chair. The committee chair was rather impressed by what he had done in just a day, and along with disqualifying the culprit suggested he use what he just did as a new display, and she would allow it. Since it would be a shame if his chances at winning were lost due to foul play. So he did, and though he didn't win, he did place second! Which for a day of work, added in with the feeling of accomplishment in using science to catch a wrongdoer, it was exhilarating!

He began to study cause and effect along with anything he could, looking for ways to use it. He became enamored with what was known as "forensic sciences." He eventually went to college in Talonopolis and got his degrees in biochemistry. He quickly learned that it wasn't enough to have the degree so he started to study many more crossdicipline areas of science, like botony and zoology. Eventually he looked into joining the Aquellian military to put his specific knowledge to good use, much to his parent's chagrin, but found they didn't use science as much as he hoped and so he decided to move to Canterlot. Surely ponies would use investigations more than griffons whom tended to be more militant than peaceful. And that is what he did. He quickly found a position in the REA as an investigative scientist. Apparently the Silverbeak name extended to even the reaches of Equestria. His parents still would prefer that he go into research but accept that he must forge his own path, and realize that research might come from his current path and allow him to gain notoriety. Which isn't too far off, he enjoys researching the different things related to criminology and pathology, perhaps he'll publish his research when he is ready. However for now he enjoys just doing the practical side of his practice finding evidence and studying the criminal mind (forensic psychology).

Character Summary: Dexter is a rather brilliant scientist, and he has the ego to match. He believes in science and deductive reasoning to a fault. Consequently he dislikes when people dissect deductive reasoning, this means that he loathes lawyers, unless they are paying him to testify, then they are alright because they tend to defend his deductions and findings. It is all very complicated, but on the whole he doesn't like them one bit. He is very arrogant when talking to people about almost anything within his field of knowledge, and especially so on the stand. He'll speak professionally but be condescending in most other respects. When he is on the stand he tends to simplify everything, and if the lawyer tries to dissect it poorly will end up talking down to them.

Outside the court, he is still arrogant and brash, but not without reason. His family prestige and his intelligence affords him a certain leeway to be like that, at least he thinks so. He goes out like any normal pony, griffon or zebra. Often taking in shows with friends, and generally enjoying life. Classical music is among his favorite music to listen to as it tends to relax him, unless he doesn't wish to relax in which case he listens to any energetic music. He is very much a believer in practicality, if something works he does it. He is also very methodical, and will do things the same way every day (this does not extend entirely to scientific methodology, as he is often thinking of how to better perform methods). If you walk into his lab and move something, he'll know. Even if his entire lab looks like it is in complete disarray there is a reason everything is where it is. And he will not take kindly to things being moved.

Though he loves science and enjoys doing research he enjoys the hunt more. Perhaps it is his griffon nature, but he enjoys chasing down every lead to catch a suspect. He gets a rush from doing it, even if most of the chase is done in a lab, being able to catch a criminal with his evidence is a rush. He is a good friend if you can stand his arrogance though. He will stand by them and help them if they can. As a kid he often tutored his friends in math and science (though that was partially to stroke his ego). And he still plays sports. Though he doesn't have access to many of the local sports that he enjoyed in Talonopolis he picked up some pony sports like hoofball (which is odd to play when you don't actually posses hooves), and he often races with pegasii. He isn't particularly competitive though, he just enjoys the sport. Knowing so much about griffon (and pony) physiology, he recognizes the importance of staying healthy and active. Even if he is on the losing side he is gracious, unless it is an intellectual debate (especially about science) in which case he will brood for days if he loses, and research to try and turn it around. If he truly can't he'll concede defeat, but won't be happy about it.

If you learn his quirks he is quite pleasant to be around and befriend. However he is quite rough around the edges.
