Attack on Titan

Recommended Posts

So, I started watching this recently, and I must say:

BEST. ANIME. EVER.

It's not cliche like most action animes where everyone is dominating over the main enemies (in this case, the titans); there's a lot of stuff that you don't really expect, and when it hits, it hits you hard.

Anyone else watch this? And if so, what do you think about it?

I watched it. It's a pretty good anime. It's got a lot of really awesome and original ideas. I really love the whole set up, and it's paced pretty well. It also benefits from an excellent production; it just looks gorgeous.

What holds me back from calling it any kind of best anime ever personally, is the characters. There are some I like fine, but some less so. In particular, I'm not very fond of the main character, Eren. I just don't find him to be a particularly interesting or appealing character. And it pushes onto the other characters: I love Mikasa, but she seriously has some dependency issues which just get kind of annoying. Ultimately watching it, it often feels like I'm more interested in the world and the ideas than I am the characters i'm supposed to care about.

Still, it's a pretty cool, enjoyable anime. I think it's one anyone could stand to give a look.

True, Eren kinda reminds me of Naruto, with Eren wanting to destroy the Titans and Naruto wanting to become Hokage, they kinda also have the same hotheaded personality.

I'm far more interested in the world of AOT than I am with the characters. Most of them are flat and uninteresting, the sole exception being Jean, who has flaws, development, and constantly struggles with being good enough for his place in the Survey Corps. Eren/Mikasa/Armin come off as one-dimensional characters who thrive on spectacle and action rather than character interactions.

That said, the art of the anime is gorgeous, with loads of scenery porn and scenery gorn and the mystery of the titans continues to be a driving point in the story. The action is excellently choreographed and animated and the scenery painting really gives you a sense of scale and wonder at the worlds both inside and outside the walls.

Now if only there were some 3DMG on 3DMG fights... :)

Naruto is more fun though. The lighter moments make him a more endearing protagonist. With Eren it's pretty much all brooding and kill all the titans all the time. He just doesn't seem to have much else to him. He reads to me like a particularly flat character, especially for a protagonist.

Though in most other respects, Attack on Titan is a much better anime than Naruto, I'd say.
