Roleplay Type: World of Equestria

Name: Cygnus Flare

Sex: Male

Age: Stallion

Species: Unicorn

Eye colour: Gold

Coat: Cygnus has a coarse, chocolate-brown coat that always seems a little weatherbeaten.

Mane/Tail: Snowy white in colour and somewhat unkempt, it’s very clear that Cygnus has little regard for keeping up appearances. His mane is typically cut short, though his bangs grow so fast that they tend to hang over his eyes a little. As for his tail, well, that just gets lopped off every now and again to keep it from getting too long.

Physique: Sturdy, muscular, and athletic. As the captain of a small ship, Cygnus has a body toned for hard work and hard sailing.

Residence: The cozy captain’s quarters of his ship, the Swansong.

Occupation: Explorer, cartographer, big brother, pirate king. Cygnus is the captain of a small airship called the Swansong. His lovely swan carries him anywhere in the world he dreams of going, and during his travels he makes extremely detailed maps. Thanks to his passion and his eye for detail, he makes a stable living off of selling these maps for practical and decorative use!

Of course his real fulltime job is taking care of his younger sister, Vela Breeze. She lives aboard the Swansong with him, where her wild imagination and dreams of being a deadly pirate get her into all sorts of trouble. Ever the loving sibling, Cygnus devotes every spare moment he has to keeping Vela under control. Of course, trying to keep her tied down has earned him the title of Pirate King Cygnus, the hated rival of Dread Private Vela Breeze!

Cutie Mark: The constellation Cygnus.

Cyg’s father is an astronomer and his mother a magic instructor, though both have a thirst for adventure that they have satisfied at least twice a year every year since they were married. Their thrilling lifestyle was an infectious one, and as such their son Cygnus caught the bug from a very early age. As soon as he was old enough he was enrolled in a Young Explorers group in Canterlot, where he learned all of the skills and tricks every good explorer needs! Of course, having an astronomer for a father gave him quite the edge at navigating the skies by the stars, and it made him unbearably smug to constantly outshine his fellow Young Explorers in this area. He was practically insufferable, and little to his knowledge it was the only reason his instructors refused to give him his Star Guide’s badge!

The night of the Young Explorers’ first expedition was clear and balmy, with the stars twinkling happily away in the sky. Cygnus was thrilled, as the leader of the Explorers was letting all of them board his ship to go on a two-day trip! The whole affair went by smoothly, with all the fillies and colts having a blast and earning plenty of new badges for their adventurer’s vests. On their last night under the stars, however, the weather took a turn for the worse and stormclouds rolled in! They learned later that some lazy pegasus fell asleep and let the nasty weather roll away from him while he snoozed. An innocent enough mistake, but it sure did make for a dangerous night aboard a ship!

To be fair, though, the storm wouldn’t have been very dangerous, except that it sent a lot of the young ponies into a panic! One unicorn colt snapped their sails open and sent the ship hurtling straight into the stormclouds, spinning out of control as it went, and a filly’s magic went so wild with fear that she put all of their compasses on the fritz! It was terrifying, nightmarish! It took everything the responsible adults had in them to keep the pegasi from trying to fly away into the storm, let alone get the ship under control. So Cygnus took charge. He bellowed for his closest friends to take control of the sails and he climbed up the mast, his gaze fixed upwards. He did not move, and finally his patience was rewarded when a break in the clouds revealed the constellation his father had named him for: Cygnus! With just a glimpse at the starry swan Cygnus Flare knew where they were and which direction would get them out of the storm and safely home. He yelled the commands to his friends, and not long after the little ship and all the Young Explorers in it were in the clear!

With a flash of light, Cyg’s cutie mark appeared! There was a great deal of celebration all around, and the colt finally earned his Star Guide’s badge and his Leadership badge! The dramatic nature of the event, though, did teach him a lesson in being a little more down-to-earth. Navigating the stars helped him save his friends and fellow Explorers from some real danger. He finally saw it for the serious tool that it was, and never used it as a bragging right again! Well, not too often anyhow.

History: Cygnus never really had a ‘comfortable’ life. His parents, for all their bookish, reclusive qualities, had a wild sense of adventure. When he was old enough, they took him on all of their mad adventures across Equestria and beyond and never really let him have the quiet, normal life of a typical Canterlot colt. Life for Cyg was a lot of study, magic practice, and learning survival skills. Then it became study, magic practice, and putting those survival skills to use!

After he got his cutie mark, the colt knew he wanted to captain his own ship some day. He spent the majority of his school years daydreaming about exploring the world while his summers were spent actually exploring. Eventually, when he finished school, he tossed out the idea of post-secondary education and got a job reproducing historical maps into more luxurious art pieces. He had always loved maps, and his father’s fondness for star charts had inspired a knack for penmanship and cartography in Cyg from a young age. This job was the perfect place to hone his skills as a mapmaker, and after a few years in the business he finally worked up enough money for his own vessel, the Swansong. With those close friends of his from his Young Explorer days in his crew he set off from Canterlot for a life of adventure!

For five whole years he was away from home, exploring the world from the Badlands to Unyasi to Aquellia! And truth be told he was something of a bad son, never bothering to write his parents. So it was little surprise that when he returned to Canterlot to find he had become an older brother, Cygnus was shocked! His parents, on the other hoof, were thrilled. Their little Vela Breeze was something of a terror. Her thirst for adventure had led to a grand delusion that she was Dread Pirate Vela, scourge of the skies, horror of the heavens, monster of maelstroms! Every moment of her life she was living a pirate story, and frankly her parents were on their last nerve. Vela was a foal who needed to waste some energy out in the open air, and since her parents could only take her away from the city twice a year, Cygnus was put in charge of her!

And so now Cygnus Flare, captain of the Swansong, is a fulltime big brother who shares in his adventures with his...adorable little sister, Vela Breeze. She’s a hoof-ful, but he loves her to bits and pieces, and nothing makes him happier than showing his sis the many beauties of the world they share!

Character Summary: Cygnus is a dependable sort of stallion. As a ship’s captain and guardian to the world’s most high-strung, wildcard filly, he’s got a knack for multitasking and getting things done. It takes a lot to scare him or get him riled up, and overall he’s a pleasant, agreeable stallion. Around most folk. He’s got the sort of natural charm and good looks that make him easy to fall for, so it’s not rare to see him with a mare or two vying for his affections when he does leave his ship from time to time. All his time spent just with his crew (see: colts’ club) and little sister, however, have left him rather shy and socially inept when it comes to the opposite gender. So when he receives all that female attention, the only way he really knows how to talk to them is by using lines from the few books he’s read!

Swashbuckling rogues all seem to have a knack for flirting, so by channeling their smooth moves Cygnus hopes to magically become a capable romantic. Unfortunately, those so-called smooth moves always leave him feeling awkward. He gets the delivery down so well and becomes the perfect embodiment of Casanova, but every time he flirts he just turns beet red and gets terribly embarrassed.

When you get past all that, though, there is a sensible stallion lurking underneath the surface. There would have to be in order to gain the respect of a crew of capable sailor stallions, enough for them to look to him as a leader. And for all the smugness of his youth, Cynus remains a down-to-earth unicorn to this day (even though most of his life is spent sailing the skies!). He’s got quite a knack for kinetic spells, too, as they really come in hoof-y on a ship.

As a captain, Cyg dishes out tough love when its called for, brotherly love when it’s needed, and good cheer as often as he can. Nopony aboard the Swansong dreams of a better life or captain, and Cygnus could never ask for a better crew! As a brother, he’s often harried, always doting, and perfectly capable of drawing hard lines when Vela goes too far. It wasn’t until his little sis came aboard the Swansong that his crew really saw the soft side of him, and despite Vela’s wild nature and her uncanny ability to really push Cyg’s buttons, it’s very clear to all observers that the two are the best of chums!
