AlextheAngel Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 Hello!Okay, to be quite honest, I'm a bit lost. Lately my creativity has gone down the drain. I have an OC I'm working on for the Canterlot Chronicles, and his cutie mark is supposed to be a sun in the midst of causing a solar flare. I had one story written out, but apparently it's not good enough. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what would make a good cutie mark story? (Also, I'd really appreciate it if someone would give me a rundown of what types of magic Unicorns can use. ^_^)
stormchaser1991 Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 well to be honest that is main up to you just give it some thought as to the magic most unicorn magic as to do with there cutie mark beside the basic ones
DerpRavener Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 Having taken a look at the character, here's what I think the major issue with the cutie mark story was: discovering one's special talent is supposed to be a pivotal moment for the character, as it's the time where their unique passion. The way you'd written it, it made it seem like a mundane occurrence and like the knowledge was something they already had. The thing that comes to mind for modifying the story, is maybe change things a bit so that the character had either little contact or a passing interest with solar science prior to the solar flare prompted him to do research, and that's when he discovered that it was his passion. Now that I think about it, that might be another issue: we know what the character's cutie mark is, but it's not clear just what his special talent/passion is.
AlextheAngel Posted June 4, 2015 Author Report Posted June 4, 2015 Hm... Stormchaser said that most unicorn magic has to do with their cutie mark. What if it was some special spell he had?
DerpRavener Posted June 5, 2015 Report Posted June 5, 2015 Oh right, you asked a second question as well. I'd meant to respond to that... Magic is pretty broad. Spells themselves aren't that strictly defined, as long as they don't end up overly powerful. My personal approach is either spells with small effects, or somewhat powerful spells related to whatever the pony's specialty is. As examples: most unicorns could probably learn a simple light spell. A character with specialties of either fire or combat magic might be able to create a wall of flames.I think it's basically anything goes as long as one doesn't either break the setting (no OC should be able to out-magic Twilight outside of very specific circumstances, for example) or make it harder or more annoying for other roleplayers. I don't think that will save you any work with the cutie mark story though. If he got his cutie mark from learning a spell, you'll still have to figure out what spell it was and how learning it made him realize something about himself. Off the top of my head I can't think of a spell idea that both deals with the sun and would be easy enough to learn.Personally, I would still start from here: what is his special talent?
AlextheAngel Posted June 5, 2015 Author Report Posted June 5, 2015 Now that I think about it, I honestly don't know. But considering that solar flares are bright flashes of light, maybe this could have something to do with what his talent is? Possibly it could have something to do with providing light?
DerpRavener Posted June 5, 2015 Report Posted June 5, 2015 Hmm, you could probably work with that. 'Providing light' by itself seems a bit limited as a lifelong passion, but I think it could work with a bit of tweaking. The two ideas that come to mind are that either he studies and practices light based magic, or he makes light sources (i.e. chandeliers, laterns, he probably knows how to whip up a torch, and maybe stranger things). That you could probably spin into a cutie mark relating to providing illumination.
