Mane/Tail/Other: Rarity's mane and tail are both coloured purple. Rarity pays a good deal of attention to their care and they are both styled with elegant curls.
Physique: Rarity is slightly more sleek and slender than average for a unicorn mare, however she isn't delicate. Thin enough to be considered pretty, not so thin enough so that everypony thinks she's starved herself to do it.

 

 

Residence: Rarity lives at Carousel Boutique, which is also her place of business. The ground floor of the boutique consists of a large space for Rarity to showcase her designs. Dresshorses laden with new dresses and accessories are displayed in the windows and around the shop. Upon entry, on the left is a small cashier's till sitting on a wooden desk backed up against a staircase leading to Rarity's home proper as well as two booths separated by a curtain. Each booth contains a mirror, a stool and a dressing table for the purposes of makeovers. On the right is the entryway to a dressing room as well as a display table and several large mirrors for dress fittings. Across from the doorway is a staircase leading up and a corridor leading to another door marked as private. The door leads to Rarity's kitchen and dining room, both are tiled with ceramic tiles and are well equipped for the seamstress' needs. Upstairs, there are four rooms. Rarity's bedroom where a luxurious double bed lies to the side of the room and several tables are set up for sewing. A guest bedroom, normally occupied by Sweetie Belle, which contains little more than a single bed and a chest of Sweetie Belle's things along with several cabinets. There is also Rarity's inspiration room which changes on a regular basis. Suffice to say this is where the seamstress stores her dressmaking supplies in cupboards and on shelves, or more often than not, haphazardly on the floor. The room has tables set up for sewing, stitching and various other crafts practiced by the dressmaker. The room is in a constant state of flux and mess, as a proper inspiration room should be. There is also a small bathroom, containing a heated bath for relaxation.

Cutie Mark: Rarity earned her cutie mark during a school play. It was a comedic tale about the power of food and had underlying messages to encourage healthy eating. It wasn't the most glamorous play but there was something special about it. The foals had to organise it themselves, being given time out of lessons to organise the production. They had to work as a team in order to accomplish the task, and while some of them slacked off others knuckled down hard to get it done. Rarity was one of those who took pride in her schoolwork, and was eager to assist however she could. The foal had always been interested in sewing and dressmaking, having learnt the hobby from her mother. While she wasn't a dressmaker herself, Rarity's mother did sew from time to time and was more than eager to take the time to teach her daughter the skill. The white unicorn excelled and soon surpassed her mother and began to teach herself with the help of books and magazine guides. It seemed she had a talent for it, but never really thought of it as that thing that made her special.

 

By the time the school play had come around, Rarity was easily the best filly in her class in sewing so volunteered to make the costumes. All of them. She didn't even need to be asked. Of course, several fillies offered to help but Rarity denied them all. She wanted to do it alone as a gift to her fellow pupils for being so kind to her. Her classmates left her to it and Rarity came back with some very good costumes. The filly kept thinking to herself though, they needed something to make them sparkle. They were well made, probably her best work to date, but there was something missing.

 

As she began anew, inexplicably, her horn flared with magic. The strong tug of destiny was not to be avoided and it forcibly dragged the poor filly out of her house and towards the horizon for several miles. The unicorn tried to resist at first out of fear, then excitement took hold. What if this was to reveal some ancient destiny? Excitement then turned to boredom as the filly watched the landscape roll by. Eventually, she was brought to a stop by a large boulder with nothing else significant in sight. Naturally, the unicorn was a little annoyed that her destiny seemed to be nothing more than a rock in the middle of nowhere. Irritated, she started to hurl insults when another inexplicable thing happened. The sky lit up and a wave of pure rainbow shattered the silence around her. The shockwave knocked the filly off her hooves and split the rock clean open, revealing an impressive geode of gems. There was a moment of realisation after the filly had recovered from the shock of what was later discovered to be a Sonic Rainboom, created in a race by her future friend Rainbow Dash. Rarity gathered up as many of the gems as she could, knowing they would be the perfect addition to her costumes to give them that last sparkle she wanted.

 

The costumes were an outstanding success, becoming the talk of the town. It was that day that Rarity earned her cutie mark, three diamonds to represent her ability to make the world a brighter place. Through her generosity, her skill with a sewing needle and eye for precious gemstones she would make the world a better place for everypony.


Unique Traits:

Element of Generosity: Rarity embodies the Element of Generosity, one of the six elements that make up the Elements of Harmony. While she no longer wields the Element, she is still connected to it through her friends and the Tree of Harmony. Her help in assisting her friend, Twilight Sparkle, to defeat the numerous enemies of Equestria has not gone without notice.

 

Dressmaking ability: Rarity's skills with a sewing needle have earned her quite the reputation. She had developed a business and owns a boutique where she sells dresses and ensembles to any pony that can pay. Her skilled designs have awarded her quite the client base and she has several clients who are very high brow. Suffice to say, her designs are in demand.

 

Combat abilities: As a by-product of being a hero of Equestria, Rarity has on more than one occasion found that she has needed to get her hooves a little dirty. In contrast to her delicate nature, she is more than willing to dive into the fray of combat. While she has no inherent skill in the martial arts, she is a proficient brawler who will do anything to defend her friends. It may be unladylike to some, but in Rarity's opinion a lady should know how to defend herself.

 

Magic: While Rarity's magic is somewhat limited in scope, it is used extensively in her work as a seamstress. She can use levitation to an impressive degree, lifting multiple objects at a time, lifting small objects to a level of accuracy above simple hoof work and can lift heavy objects with her magic. In accordance with her job, the unicorn can detect and find gems in the ground to collect for her various designs. Since most of her designs feature gemstones in some way, this ability is extremely useful. Just so long as she has a friend to help dig them up. Rarity also has a multitude of spells and abilities to make the world around her as pretty as it can be.


History:
Rarity grew up in Ponyville living with her mother Cookie Crumble, and her father Hondo "Magnum" Flanks. The unicorn filly never really bonded with her father as much as she could have, their contrasting personalities and interests being simply too much of a barrier. Of course, they are family though and family sticks together. Rarity tried her best to bond with her father despite this and the two share an amiable relationship. After all, being a reasonably successful professional hoofball star, Hondo had always really wanted a son to teach. After Sweetie Belle was born he felt that he would never get his wish, that was until Rarity suggested that he teach the local foals the sport at the School House. With a lot of generously given time and encouragement from Rarity, he took over teaching the sport at the School House despite his retirement. Having helped in achieving his wish, Rarity and Hondo became the close father and daughter they should have been. It just took them a little while. In contrast, Rarity had no problem in bonding with her mother, Cookie Crumble. She was an amateur baker specialising in cookies and was more than willing to teach her daughter sewing, as well as her secret cookie recipe. The pair get on well and have a good relationship, reminding Rarity of her roots and why Ponyville is such a good place to live.

When her sister Sweetie Belle was born Rarity was initially disinterested. Of course, the idea of having a sister was nice but she was quite un-used to the idea of having a newborn around. Sweetie Belle's foal hood coincided with Rarity being able to afford to buy a shop to market her dresses from. Again, Rarity chose to focus on work instead of her sister and by the time that Sweetie Belle began to notice her big sister, they had grown quite disparate. Little by little the young filly worked her way into Rarity's heart until she generously offered up her guest room for the filly to use whenever she liked. The two sisters have feuded many times but they seem to grow ever closer after each argument. Rarity is quite awkward around Sweetie Belle, having never had to deal with a foal herself. She does her best and gives her sister time when circumstances allow. The pair have grown friendly, but can't quite be called close. No matter how much Rarity tries. As of current, their relationship is a good one but it wouldn't take much to upset that delicate balance.

As well as forging a network of friends in her personal time, Rarity has slowly but surely climbed the fashion ladder and is now a successful designer. She has spent a lot of time in shows, dressing rooms and backstage and is now recognised as one of the best up and comers of recent times. She has always managed to fit the trends and has many admirers in the fashion world. Rarity spends most of her time in her boutique creating dresses for clients. She sometimes has assistance from her friend Spike who has developed a crush on her, but very rarely does she ask for help. The unicorn also owns a cat called Opalescence. Opalescence is independent and detached, as cats can be, but is more than content to snuggle with her owner on a cold night by the fire. On top of that, she is quite famous for being friends with Princess Twilight and saving the world from the various evils that plague it. Those adventures truly have been the highlights of her life and she wouldn't trade her friends for anything in Equestria. While her professional life and social life has prospered, she still has yet to meet a stallion truly special. Of course, there have been several coltfriends in her past, a few idle fantasies as well as a very amiable draconic admirer. But there has been no-pony yet that has been able to capture her heart. No, pony, anyway.


Character Summary/Personality:
Rarity likes to be pretty and posh. Very pretty, but not too posh. Her tone of voice is formal and her use of an extensive vocabulary can be off-putting to some, labelling her as just another small town snob. They would be very wrong. Rarity loves looking pretty, taking a considerable amount of time and effort to style her hair and buff her coat so that she's sure she goes out every day looking fabulous. There is little vanity in what she does however, she simply thinks that by making herself look pretty the world will be all the better for it. She encourages her friends and those she meets to do the same, even offering her assistance so that they can look as good as she does. Of course, if somepony were to outshine her then she might be upset, but Rarity has moved past petty envy and is content to let that pony have their moment in the spotlight. Even if she would rather have the spotlight herself, the unicorn would gladly share it with those who are deserving of it.
Rarity detests manual labour, physical exertion and getting her hooves muddy but she is one of the hardest workers you will ever meet. She goes great lengths for her friends and will happily go outside her comfort zone to help them, either by getting her hooves muddy or by performing the unladylike task of fighting.
Rarity will do anything for her friends and loves to look pretty, all deriving from a lack of self confidence. Her giving nature used to stem from a fear of losing her friends, she would do anything for them so they wouldn't leave her. Rarity however has grown to accept with time and trust that a true friend will not leave her. This solidarity has turned her generosity into something more noble, wanting to make the world a better place instead of simply making her own world a better place. The unicorn just wants to be loved and to make the world a better place. She would give everypony free makeovers and dresses if she could, but she still needs to make a living and doesn't like it if somepony decides to take advantage of her kind spirit. There is nopony more deserving of embodying the Element of Generosity, willing to help her friends at the cost of her own happiness. Far more than just a simple small town snob that more judging ponies would mark her as.
