((yes this is a repost - but upon advice from staff I've completely redone the second half))

Scootaloo

The little orange filly lay on the blanket staring up at the sky... not a single spec of movement... she looked down at the blanket, specifically picked out for today because of its rainbow pattern. Atop it was a picnic basket and a plate with a sandwich sat on the other side of the blanket, untouched. In front of her was a similar plate by now only containing crumbs... likely from several sandwiches... the young pegasus opened the basket and pulled out the small clock, looking at the time she hung her head "she's not coming..." she finally said. In the past, she would have cried, but by now, all her tears were long gone, all that was left was the empty feeling in the pit of her stomach that no matter how many sandwiches she ate would never be filled.

Another long sigh and a few moments later she put the clock back into the basket and began to pack everything up, she stopped at one wrapped up parcel, slowly unwrapping it to reveal a slice of Zap Apple cake, starting to get hard and crusty at this point, clearly having been saved a little too long --- no doubt having been packed on at least one other, no doubt failed, picnic... wondering if she should give up and throw it away, or save it for yet another unknown period of time...

Rainbow Dash

Dash watched as the door closed to the gym, letting out a contented sigh, she stood up on her back legs, spread her wings, and fell backwards onto the hay-bale "That took SO long, but I just know they're gonna be awesome!" she turned her head to the side, looking at the clock, looking at it hard and a puzzled look moved across her face "hang on... was there something I was supposed to do after practice?" she asked herself, then a hook of horror came across her face "Ohmygosh! I forgot!" she said, bolting upright "I was supposed to go hang out with scootaloo nearly an hour ago!" She leapt up and flew towards the door

*WHAM*

Completely forgetting in her rush that the door didn't open unless you pushed down the bar...

Dash shook her head to clear it, glancing around to make sure nopony had seen her embarrassing mistake, then walking over and gently opening the door, making sure it closed behind her, and then blasting off into the sky with such force that it left the trees shaking and one student chasing after some papers he had been carrying...

Dash landed on the empty hill, looking around "Scootaloo!" she called "Sorry I'm late!" she looked around "SCOOTALOO!" she sighed, then something caught her attention. She smelled something... her favorite cake, the unmistakable scent of Zap Apple! Maybe scoots was still around! She flew around the area, trying to locate the smell, finally finding it, and her face fell even harder... there int he dirt under the tree was the cake, clearly having been unceremoniously scraped off a plate... and from the looks of it, the cake had been sitting out a few days too long anyway...

Dash walked -not flew- back to the top of the hill, sitting down hard "I let her down... again..." she said "First when I had to go wrangle that storm from the everfree... then when I had an emergency wonderbolt practice because Streak was sick the day before the show... and now because I was more focused on coaching..." She watched as the sun slowly descended towards the far horizon, stopping in its path occasionally, no doubt because Twilight was still struggling to master controlling it. Normally Dash would have laughed at this and made some joke about her alicorn friend... but right now it only served to remind her of all the times she'd been there for her friends in the past... and how it seemed she was there less and less now... "Some element of loyalty I am... I cant even be there for the filly that matters the most to me..."
