The Great Gift Giver (Zap Apple, Ambrosia, Applejack)

Zap was sure his little sister had lost it. Or maybe she just needed glasses in order to see that the jewelry she thought was a ring was actually a badge. And to be more precise, a feather-flippin' Wonderbolts badge! Zap didn't say much at first, just ogled at the shiny of the badge, carefully hovering over to it and grabbing it by the box it was resting in. His moment was cutoff by his little sister's voice. He looked back at her with reactionary antagonism. "This isn't a ring, Amby." He looked back at it, his eyes growing to the size of saucers. "It's a Wonderbolts flight badge."

For a moment, little Ambrosia was torn between whether she would believe her brother, or her own eyes.  She might have gotten snow on her long lashes, after all.  That made it hard to see shiny things clearly, and whatever their present was, it was certainly shiny!  With difficulty, the entangled filly sat up, straining to reach a beribboned hoof to her eye to wipe it off.  There, now give a good squint...

"I see a ring, Zappers."  It was confusing.  He wouldn't have acted so enthusiastic if it wasn't a badge; badges seeming to be the only kind of jewelry colts cared about.  But it was clearly a ring, which mean....

Her brother must want to look pretty!

At that thought, her troubled expression broke into a wide grin.  "OK, big brother!  Put it on, wanna see how you look!"  She giggled, as one did right before pulling a prank.  Really, though, if she could get Zappers to understand how much a filly loved to look good, so that they could have something to talk about... it was worth giving up the ring.

Zap didn't have his sister's full approval. She always held back her distaste of his style, he always assumed. But the amount of suggestion she had was good enough for him. "Alright!" Zap took the badge out of the box and put it on the chest part of the pajamas he had been wearing this whole time. He carefully fastened it, trying to make sure it would look straight to those who would see him with it. Seeing what could be a scuff mark, he breathed on the badge and rubbed it a little with his elbow, attempting to assure it's luster. "See? A badge." Zap struck an aggressively sporty pose.

It was really and truly strange what happened next.  One moment, Ambrosia had been hiding her grin behind her hoof, ready to giggle at her silly brother for trying to wear a ring like a badge.  And yet, once he fixed it on his pajamas, it... looked like a badge?  She squinted, looking for the ring she knew she had seen.

Nope, just a brother with a flight badge.  She sat back, puzzled.  Should she be sad the ring was no longer there, or relieved that she had been spared the embarrassment of trying to wear a badge like a ring?  "Huh,"  She rubbed her cute little noggin with confuzzlement in her frizzles.  "You... look.... you look like... you!"  That was about all she was willing to say on the matter, she'd never be caught calling her brother *handsome* out loud... not until he took better care in grooming, at least.

Somewhere somehow somecreature was laughing lightly. The hope had been that the two would insist the other take the gift, their happiness at seeing their sibling getting what they want overshadowing the pale forces of desire. It had mostly worked, and somepony scored a point somewhere for something. A giant ding was heard!

The other boxes vanished and in a sweep of snow flurries everything else in the clearing save the two and the gift vanish.

In a swirl of leaves and sneaky lightning did the Great Gift Giver appear at the edge of the clearing.
"A handsome colt and a filly with a beautiful heart, and what a brilliant start! Maybe now you catch me, and behold further works of art!"

"The game is ahoof you quick little ponies, now come and catch me," it said with glee before pronking off with a high, mirthful laugh.

Ding, ding... did that bell mean anything?  Did Ambrosia win something, or was that just an alarm bell for this dream?

No, no, even though the pile of presents was vanishing into a flurry of snow, the Great Giver of Gifts had reappeared, drawing holiday magic in it's wake.  "Come on, Zappers, we gotta get him!"  She still didn't have her gift, after all!

Zap fluttered up from a two second snow storm to see the giant boxes beneath him vanish. As he glided back to the regular apple orchard soil, he checked on his badge. It was still here. Zap tilted his head around as he looked at his chest, attempting to see his reflection in the luster of the shiny metal insignia. When interrupted by his sister's urgency, Zap looked up and around and questioned the strange voices to himself as well. Were there more gifts? Zap wanted to find out. "This way, sis!" Zap galloped towards the last appearance of the mythical creature, his wings providing an occasional flutter to take the weight off his legs as he ran.
