Well, the Earth does have a gravity well, so that helps things along. If we saw it coming far enough in advance, we might be able organize a mission to nudge it off course. The gravity tug concept has quite a bit of merit, but this is a pretty big asteroid, so you'd need to start early.

The real question that everyone is missing is: why don't we catch one of these NEOs and put it in orbit? They're literally gold mines. :)

yeah the article said that the rock passed us 85% of the distance to the moon which i thought was cool. also I would imagine this thing was going fast since it was detected on the 4th and reached its closest point 4 days later (that is if NASA's asteroid detection has a far reach)
