Character Summary:

His entire life, Indigo has enjoyed exploring the unknown and finding lost treasures. In school, he always drove his history teachers insane with constant questions about old legends and myths. When he first set out on his own, he tried following his dream of being a treasure hunter. Sadly, he came crashing back to the reality that everpony needs a source of income. And while an occasional find in the outer segments of the Everfree Forest or other similar places, could be good for some cash now and then, it was not enough to survive on. Eventually, he settled for a job as a clerk in Canterlot's historical archives.

As time went by, he became depressed as he saw his dreams slipping further and further away from his grasp. Many of the legends he'd managed to look into proved to be nothing short of fairy tales for little foals, and he spent his days in a stuffy old building behind a desk. Every day he felt his energy being drained away.

But then one day, he happened to catch word of the legend of the Mare in the Moon. He'd decided to look it up again out of boredom, and realized that the supposed day of Nightmare Moon's return would soon arrive. Due to his past disappointments, he was hardly inclined to believe it. However, that year on the day of the Summer Sun Celebration, the sun did not rise when it was supposed to. At first, he thought he was imagining things. But before long, word had spread from Ponyville: The legend was true. Nightmare Moon had returned, bringing everlasting night with her.

The revelation affected Indigo far different than it did most other ponies. He was ecstatic. Oh, he didn't like the idea of never seeing the sunlight again any more than any other pony, but this proved the legends true, which rekindled his hunger for adventure and discovery. He immediately set out to find the Elements of Harmony. Unfortunately for him, six other mares beat him to it and saved the day before he could even make it to the old ruined castle they resided in. Though he was disappointed, he was still excited about what other possibilities might lay in store for him.

Indigo decided to save his money and plan grand exploration trips at least a few times a year. A year later, he got word of a museum in Fillydelphia being robbed by a band of gryphon bandits. The items stolen included one of his first successful finds: a small pegasus statuette from slightly before Luna's banishment. It wasn't especially valuable in monetary terms, but he took it personally. That week, he took some vacation time and went after the thieves. Through stealth, endurance, and mostly luck, he managed to follow the crooks all the way to their hideout in gryphon lands and steal back most of the smaller trinkets from right under their beaks. When they did finally spot him, they chased him all the way back to Fillydelphia- right into the authorities' hooves. After some lengthy explanation, he was commended for his bravery by the mayor of Fillydelphia, as well as the Princesses themselves, via one of Luna's own immediate subordinates. Ever since, he has kept up a semi-regular correspondence with the Nighttime Princess concerning his interests in exploration, archeological discoveries across the world, and the blooming historical society in certain major cities.

I'm just trying to decide what colors to use for him, really. Otherwise I was just wondering what folks thought about his background, etc. I'm also not sure which section to put him in. I'll probably end up using him in some sort of exploration or retrieval adventure RP, but that may require me to take liberties with/make up bits of Equestrian history, lore, etc. as I go. So while I'd LIKE to use the Mane RP section (it's the most active by far, from what I can tell), it's possible either the Crossover or Open RP sections would be more suitable. What do you think?

-edit-

Also, I was originally thinking of saying he'd interacted with Luna directly in the past, even going so far as having her appoint him as a special agent of some sort. But I didn't want to do that without checking with the mods and Luna's player first if I do end up putting him in the Mane RP xD

Well, the Luna thing is a no-go for Mane RP, since we don't allow previous relationships with Cast characters. You can totally Roleplay with them and form a bond there, but nothing prior. For Crossovers/Free Roleplay, that's totally cool.

You could use this character for the Free Roleplay and try it out, and then make another to fit the Mane RP if you like. There's no limit to characters, and you don't have to constantly be playing the OC(s) you've apped for.
