Character Summary:

Crescent was born to a family in Canterlot of average standing, he didn't need for anything during his early years and grew up without much excitement of any kind, attending school, making friends and generally just acting like he was expected to. Already in Magic Kindergarten he showed signs of being gifted with magic, and was promptly groomed by his parents and teachers to try out for Celestia's school for gifted unicorns in the future, something Crescent simply went along with like he'd done all of his life.

What followed were several years of constant studying, private tutors and lessons in magic, his free time quickly became nonexistent, instead filled with expectations and schooling. Already at this point did Crescent start to feel constricted, like he was being choked by the life he was living and couldn't breathe, the very few times he brought this up with his parents however only earned him a scolding and reassurance that it was only for his best, that this was the true path to happiness for him, and so he reluctently continued his studies.

At some point he was finally presented to the judging committee, his parents watching with pride and expectation in their eyes, and after being brought through a series of tests he was found gifted enough to enter the program. Crescent would never forget the looks on his parents' faces that day, smiling and eyes glowing with happiness and pride, he would not forget them simply because it was a joyful memory, but because the looks on those faces would eventually be replaced by something else entirely.

Afterwards nothing really changed, it was just more schooling, more studying and more lessons, only this time it felt even more constricting, with both the Canterlot society and his parents expecting greater and greater things from him.

It was also during this time that he discovered his special affinity for divining and seeking magic, easily creating new spells on the fly to find whatever he or anypony else had lost, but even after all he had went through, no matter how many told him how gifted he was, he still had not gained his cutie mark.

There comes a time in any young colt's life where one feels lost, out of place, or simply unable to figure out what to do with one's future, this was no less true for Crescent, who at that point in his life felt absolutely terrible. Not only were his days bland and boring, he had not even found his special talent and gained his cutie mark, and no matter what he tried to tell his parents, they kept insisting that he would find the answer if he only kept studying.

So he kept on studying, day out and day in, until one fateful day when his entire world was turned upside down.

It was on the day of his class' first school trip, the destination being Mount Canterlot as part of a Divining class focused on gem seeking spells and their uses. Most of the other students were thrilled, but Crescent barely felt any excitement for it at all, figuring that it was simply another class as part of their studies.

When they finally arrived at Mount Canterlot, he discovered that he could not have been more wrong. The nature, cliffs, rocks and air all felt new and exhilerating, as if stepping hoof outside of a dusty and confined old library where he could hardly have breathed, but out here, outside of Canterlot and the stuffy class rooms, he actually felt free for the first time in his life, his mind and heart filling with joy as he imagined all the secrets of Mount Canterlot, just waiting for him to find and uncover them.

As the class finally split up for the lesson, Crescent was the first one off, his horn glowing with a soft blue aura as his desire for discoveries manifested itself in divination magic, urging him on.

When it was finally time to return to Canterlot, Crescent showed up carrying saddlebags filled to the brim with various objects he had found, rare gems, broken pottery, old stones, his face and mane covered in dirt and sweat, but on his face was the brightest of smiles, and on his flank a golden and azure compass had appeared.

After this Crescent wasted no time, the first thing he did was to confront his parents, and with grim determination he told them everything, how he could no longer just sit and study all day, how he had finally found his calling and the reason why he was so gifted with divining magic. His parents were horrified, his mother even bursting into tears, begging him to reconsider, urging him to continue his studies.

Crescent would hear nothing of it however, and in the end his parents gave their sullen acceptance of his decision. He dropped out of Celestia's school for the gifted, abandoned his studies and left Canterlot.

There was an entire world out there, and he would see all of it.

This is a pretty solid application,I feel the only part that is missing is a little about his personality and perhaps ambition beyond just wandering (such is how does he make bits)? For the latter, does is his explorations funded or sponsored? Is he a private explorer? One for hire? It seems you could go so many routes with him, from him living off the land and exploring for its own sake, to a highly paid explorer with patrons who have him search for specific items or locations.

The reasoning I had behind not describing his personality much, is that it's something I'd much rather explore through RPing. As for the making money part, I imagined that he'd do both some private work, such as finding historical artifacts and selling them, as well as taking jobs from clients to do various things within his area of expertise.
