Master Gunnery Sergeant Alastair Goldmane

Oy, just a'cause I can poke you in the eyes from 100 yards doesn’t mean we can’t be mates!

Name: Master Gunnery Sergeant Alastair “Goldy” Goldmane, AEF ret.

Sex: Male

Age: Griffin nearing the end of his prime, aged 40-45 by human years.

Species: Griffin

colour Scheme: Javan Tiger (feline half)

Feathers: Brown with black spots. Pinion tips are white.

Eye colour: Green

Physique: Toned, but not massive. Built more for endurance than raw strength.

Origin: Born on the outskirts of Talonopolis. Currently lives on and travels aboard the heavily-modified Horizon-class airship Artorius.

Unit: 1st Battalion, 13th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR, “Bloody Thirteen”), Black Lance, 1st Aerie Aquellian Marines

Occupation: Contractor, Artorius security officer, marksman

Motivation: Adventure. Alastair has seen and done many things, but is always looking forward to what lies just beyond the horizon. He believes in living life to the fullest, if he kills, he kills with ferocity; if he loves, he loves with passion.

Likes: The perfect shot, billiards, Talonopolis bourbon, campouts, roughing it, adventure, card games

Dislikes: Slow days, formal occasions, missing his shots, being beaten at cards by Demetrius, the inner city

Character History:

Compared to many lower Griffon families in the Canyons, the Goldmanes were relatively well-off, which won them some scorn from the general masses Talonopolis. Despite their many members, the family was able to maintain a comfortable living with a combination of hunting, factory work in Talonopolis, and enlistment in the Aquellian Armed Forces. Alastair was never one for school, nor was he one for factory work, hunting suited him just fine. He would spend days if not weeks out in the wilderness, tracking, stalking, and taking his quarry. Whenever he would return home with his quarry there would be a feast. These adventures provided him with time to consider his options in the way of his career, after all nights spent out in the wild with nary a soul around are perfect times to think about things. On one such hunting trip it occurred to him that the military was the best place for him. The outdoors, the adventure, the traveling, the exploring. It would fit him like a glove!

Despite their social standing, most Goldmanes never had the education to become officers, but their down to earth attitude and level-headedness made them excellent NCOs. Alastair was one such enlistee. His skills allowed him to climb the enlisted ranks quickly, reaching the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant just before his honorable discharge from the Aquellian marines.

Alastair’s ascendancy did not come without struggle however, his blatant disregard for conventional chain of command drew the ire of many younger officers, but attracted the attention of the 13th SOAR, better known as “Bloody Thirteen.” Alastair did well for himself in the 13th, gaining renown as a capable marine and excellent marksman. Seeing as the 13t's primary function was infiltration and surgical strikes on foreign lands, it allowed him to exercise his interests in hunting, camping, and outdoor exploration in extreme conditions.

As Alastair grew in age, so did his yearning for something new, the next adventure. While the 'Bloody Thirteen' were usually sent out into foreign lands, the routine was always the same. This wore thin for Alastair after a while, he wanted to see what was beyond the next horizon. This day came at last when whispers of a new city hit his ears. Stalliongrad, a place of intrigue, mystery, cold weather, and to his liking, adventure! He put in his resignation when he returned to his barracks, and within the month he was heading to Stalliongrad. When he arrived he was amazed by the city's sheer size, diversity, and well chance for something new and interesting to do! Alas without a stable source of income he would soon have to move back Aquellia without his dreams of adventure realized. Luckily for Alastair a Private Military Company was looking for someone with his set of skills, and was well versed in the ins and outs of the Aquellian experience. Quickly accepting the offer Alastair was soon finished with his probationary period and was assigned to an airship that ran the Aquellian Trade spine as the Chief Security Officer. Alastair soon made a strong bond with the, at times, overly serious captain of the airship. To this day he serves Captain Strumovik aboard the Artorius. He relishes in the adventure that seems to follow that ship, like an albatross, where ever it may venture.

Skills

Melee Combat. Years of service with the 13th has taught Goldy a thing or two about fighting.

Camouflage. The Bloody Thirteen was renowned for its ability to infiltrate enemy territory undetected, strike its target deadly precision, and exfiltrate without being discovered. Years of serving with the Regiment has taught Alastair many camouflage and survival skills.

Marksmanship. Alastair was one of the SOAR’s best rangers, an expert marksman with his crossbow.

Equipment

Combat knife. Cold-rolled stainless-steel blade based on experimental Aquellian metallurgical processes is both exceptionally sharp and resistant to the elements.

Crossbow “Matilda”. Gildwyn-pattern Aquellian crossbow modified with match-grade components, including a telescopic sight. “Matilda” can take the helmet off a Griffon at 70 yards and hit point targets at a maximum of 100 yards under ideal conditions.

Wing guards. Canvas guards that strap onto the wings. Tips are weighted for striking and provide modest protection from enemy attacks.

Character Summary:

Atherton was born to a middle class family in Rockwington, older brother to Elizabeth. He did not have a privileged up-bringing. He worked hard in the foundries to help support his family. He adored his sister and made sure that no harm ever came to her. She was a skilled flyer and fighter, but Atherton always worried about her. She would just say, "Athy, there is no need to be so concerned, have some fun silly feathers!" Elizabeth was accepted into a prestigious Military school, an amazing break. Two years into her training her team had an accident out on a mission. She had a wrenched wing and multiple fractures and breaks. The doctors said that she would never fly again so the Academy shipped her back home with a letter of condolences. Atherton was extremely upset, upset with himself that he wasn't there to protect her, upset with the Academy that sent her on the mission, upset with the entire situation. Elizabeth was never the same after the accident, she was always ill, and not as spunky as she used to be. This tore at Atherton's heart. When they would walk together it would break his heart, remembering how they used to play.

Atherton steeled his heart and took off one day. He could not stand to see his sister like that any more. It was just too much for him to handle. He felt himself grow cold after he left Rockwington. But he will always have a soft spot in his heart for his sister, she has entrenched herself there. Atherton tumbled around for a few years, taking jobs where he could, usually relying on thievery or sheer intimidation to get by. He would occasionally fight for money, never really caring who or what he fought, this is where his moniker of The Black Colossus came from. He would almost always win. This honed his battle skills and made him the battle hardened Griffin he is today.

One day after having far too much to drink, he offended some griffin in some bar. Unfortunately this griffin had friends, too many friends for Atherton to fight off alone and win. Out of nowhere he felt another griffin standing back to back with him, spouting some noble nonsense and waving his sword about. They managed to fight off tall the Griffins. After the battle the griffin that helped Atherton introduced himself as Captain Tarisio Mercutio Goldplume. The Captain proposed a job for Atherton, he happened to be in the market for a First mate for his ship the Zephyr's Kiss. Atherton Accepted the generous offer. That was just over 5 years ago. Ever since that day Atherton has served the Captain as his loyal 1st mate. Atherton runs the ship through fear, almost like a military establishment. If any of the crew steps out of line or goes against his or more importantly the Captains orders, they have to answer directly to Atherton. Years of working with the Captain has honed his criminal instinct, but he will always be more brutal than his Captain. It is as though he does not know fear. Nothing effects him to the point of shaking his concentration. Atherton gets a thrill out of fighting, any fighting, but especially a fair fight. He can occasionally can become out of control, but the captain usually snaps him out of it before any real damage is done.Atherton is a large creature, and can very easily take a punch. He is also truly massive, towering head and shoulders over most other griffins.

Atherton can take massive blows that would incapacitate most other griffins,

I'd suggest just changing this to 'Atherton is a large creature, and can very easily take a punch.'

Also, that bit about his sister at the end I don't really think is necessary, it kind of seems a little redundant.
