Cutie Mark Story: During a low point in the Casino's fortunes, Jackpot's parents gambled on their son's desire to help. He messed with the odds on several games throughout the casino. Ponies won more often, but when they lost, they lost on the bigger games. The gaming department offset, but The Tops turned a profit overall. He was allowed to tinker and tinker until the day when a big act was in town. Ponies came in droves and played more games than The Top had ever seen in a day. Many walked away with bits in their pocket, stunned at turning a profit at a casino and vowing to come back. Others lost big, but still managed to have a great time as they had won more than they had lost. Coupled with the great food and amazing entertainment, everypony trotted away happy- including Jackpot, who by tilting the hand in favour of the customer in the small games ensured everypony had a good time, who walked away with his cutie mark.

History:

Jackpot was the aptly named only child of a wealthy couple from Trottingham who invested their vast personal wealth from trade into creating a massve casino and entertainment complex in Las Pegasus. Jackpot thus grew up in the lap of luxury, getting the finest education bits could buy in Las Pegasus and sampling high society life from crib on.

He grew under this protective umbrella and despite a loving relationship with his parents found himself bored with all of the things that they tried to distract him with. No, he didn't really care about school. No, he didn't really care about playing hoofball or tailball. All he cared about was being like his mother and father and running the casino. As he grew, he did get more and more responsibility and it was during an especially trying time that he earned his cutie mark.

After that, his parents gave him increasingly more responsibility until as a young stallion, they pulled out of running The Tops and allowed him to take over. Under his care, The Tops has renovated, grown larger, and is moving to make a play at being the most prestigious casino in all of Las Pegasus. He has big plans for the future for both himself and The Tops!

Character Summary:

Jackpot is wonderfully bubbly and friendly, offering a helping hoof to anypony who needs it and trying his best hoof at being a problem solver. He isn't extremely intelligent, but has an in-grown sense of business and the experience with ponies far and wide that has given him a vast index of learned responses to almost any situation. This vast catalog of responses to stresses allows him to maintain a friendly and approachable demeanor at all times, which comes in very handy as he roams the grounds of his casino.

He has only two cares in the world: That ponies have fun, eat well, and sleep safe at The Tops and that it stays open. The lengths he will go to accomplish these missions can be startling and a little comical. On the rare occasions when talent for the stage shows can't show, he has been known to throw himself out there instead for an act. When a cook goes down, he'll hop onto the line. When the hotel staff is shorthooved, he can be found helping patrons to their rooms. he is involved in every aspect of The Tops and it is his sincerest hope that everypony has a good time.

His reputation for being affable and fair has gone a long way to making The Tops one of the city's fastest growing casinos. The few worries ponies have regarding him have less to do with any severe ethical problem and more to do with some silly behavior. Sometimes, he doesn't know when to let a joke die and is known to take a funny comment and drive it into the ground until those around him have awkward smiles plastered on. His private suite is often turned into an impromptu hoofball pitch or magic show. When nervous, he flirts. His love of magic borders on the obsessive, and he has more than a few posters of various famous magicians in his quarters. He has an affinity for costumes and uniforms, having a closet that seemingly produces a never-ending stream of them. His private parties range from the needlessly extravagant to the dumbfoundingly silly; only Jackpot can combine the excesses of a rich Las Pegasite with a game of Mafia.

When conducting business, Jackpot's attitude doesn't undergo a sizeable shift. He is still affable and friendly, but years of exposure to those types tells him that a game face is required. He is well renown for being fair, but just as with any business owner, there are certain lines that he won't allow others to cross in the name The Top's financial health. Ponies won't force him into a bad deal and shoplifters, as they say, will be prosecuted. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean criminal charges, as he doesn't want to see ponies head down the wrong path. A few weeks as a dishwasher seems like a fair trade for a simple thief while contractual failures require contractual solutions!

In closing, he is a somewhat silly, nice, and fair stallion whose desire to see others happy and having fun has not in the slightest hampered him as a businesspony. In fact, if anything, this willingness to buck the trend has earned him a certain cache that is helping The Tops thrive.

Hey Steel^^

Firstoff I really like that you are apping someone rich - feels different to me, but I haven't read too many apps yet. But I know quite some stuff about character design through novel writing, so I hope I can help a bit.

As far as I have understood him, he tries to make the less rich ponies win more than it is good for the business, but instead takes out those who have a lot anyway right? (Sorry my english is not the best so maybe I didn't get it right). Now this is a certain conception of fairness, would be good if you give a reason why he has that conception, even if its only his parents teaching him it. <- Thats the question that bugged me the entire time reading.

From what I read he is quite the busy pony. Caring for a business is consuming a lot of time. That he helps here and there when it is needed is believeable though, it gives the whole casino something from a family business. But you might need to think that he needs some free time to interact with somepony outside of the casino and that with the amount of things he already does it might get a bit complicated? Doesn't mean you have to scrap that, but maybe mention how he manages to have time left for more fun sides of the life - e.g. an agent or proxy (not sure what is the right word, but you get what I mean) - or his parents care for the casino if he needs some time off. I thought about this when I read about his obsession with magic and - now that is a very biased and personal opinion - but I think that with his love to his business he has quite an obsession already and magic is rather something like a hobby.

Besides that it looks really good - only objection I would throw at anybody now would be: Do you want him to be super sympathetic? I ask because I only see one flaw in his character - that he is silly and overdoes it with jokes sometimes - and if you want him to be more interesting and realistic you should maybe add a few more points to the negative side. That can be something very small, like that he absolutely hates people who give him excuses rather than telling the truth or a real big deal - a dark secret that he is caring arround - of course the latter is sometimes a bit... overused, nevertheless it would make him - at least to me - a hundred times more interesting. It could be something he is still doing, or something he did in the past and is really not proud of.

Keep in mind those are just my thoughts, nothing I wrote is simply truth. :) But I guess you know that.

Just wanted to point out what I would add or ask. I never know if a character is for a certain RP or if you rather have a rough plan for a character but no RP - in the latter case I appreciate every help I can get.^^

Your comments are appreciated!:)

  • 2 weeks later...

Lux told me we're good to go here, I don't see anything that I have any questions about, so...

Go be free with your fancy-pants unicorn with a penchant for goofy party games that sleep-away camp kids play!

Be free in the wilds of Las Pegasus and all suburbs thereof, if he would deign to go into said suburbs for a game of Uno.
