It is said, among a certain family, that when the moon shines brightly in the week before winter begins, that a the oldest filly will gain her cutie mark. This family, has passed this tale down through many generations, and still it has never come true. While everyone in this family believes it to be true, it has never come to pass...

Untill now.

Embermane didn't know how long she'd been wandering. It was night, and she was quite hungry. She stopped in the forest she was traveling through, to chew on some odd looking flowers by the roadside. They were chewy and tasted like fresh lemons. She swallowed and teared again, as she'd been crying for a few hours now. She began walking again as the light started spanning over the horizon. She looked through the forest and smiled. The end of the forest was near, She had not noticed in the dark. Embermane bounded forward through the trees and saw she was actually on a small cliff in the forest, the trees spanned out for a little way more, before she could see in the distance, a town, in it's middle what looked like a large tree. The timid little filly with the blank flank, didn't know what the town was, but she knew that it ment safety, and this forest was anything but safe. She took off in a trot toward the edge of the forest.

Embermane didn't really know where she was going at first, until she found a small path in the forest, She came to a tree that was carved out in the shape of a house near mid-day, but she was afraid of the things she saw there and ran the other way.

Embermane walked until her hooves were sore and her eyes dry, She'd cried a bit more. She layed down in the shade of a very large tree, lost again. Not knowing she was only a little way from the edge of the forest. She lay there for a little while dozing in the fading light of the sun, When there was a noise. A rustling of leaves. She turned to look, and paled. It was a ferocious looking Manticore.

Embermane screamed shrilly and bolted from where she was, the manticore close on her heels. She Ran faster then she'd ever imagined she could, and soon broke through the trees onto the plains closest to ponyville. Ember chanced a glance behind her and still the terrible beast followed. She screamed again, and kept running.

Right into Ponyville.

Razor flew in the night sky, enjoying a nightly fly. The cool air, the stars above his head and all the flying space to himself. His reasons for being in the region were the usual, work. He didn't plan to stay long as he was just passing through on his way up north. If his day or two in town were simple he would be gone in no time, but Razor knew that nothing was simple, in fact he seemed to always find himself in strange situations.

Like now when his predatory hearing picked up the sound of a shrill scream. Not the scream of an adult, but the small shrilly scream of a child and it was coming from the direction of the Everfree Forest. Now Razor knew of the forest and how dangerous it could be, which was why he liked to go in there it offered plenty of obstacles for him to overcome and flying through trees and vines, with the threat of manticores and who knew what else....it was just too much for the adrenaline addicted griffon to ignore at times.

But that was besides the point, what he was focused on now was the screaming. Turning swiftly Razor flew over to the forest, "Who in their right mind would go into the forest at night?" Razor flew and heard the scream again and saw, running like a bat out of Tartarus, a small filly.

'What the!?!' Razor thought, and his eyes widened when he saw the form of a manticore not too far behind little filly. Acting on instinct Razor dived and quickly grabbed the filly in his claws, careful not to hurt her and flew up and away from the area. Finally he landed on a night cloud over the town and sat down, holding onto the filly so she wouldn't fall through.

"Have you lost your mind? What's are you doing outside this late? You're parents must be freaking out by now." Razor lectured the child sternly.

Static was talking to himself as he jogged through the almost empty streets of Ponyville, enjoying the cool, night air and the quiet night sounds. He didn't know why he was talking to himself now, but figured that it was just to seem like somepony was with him. Or mabye it was because he never used his voice enough.

Static continued to jog through the town, staring at the stars above him and smiling contently against the cool wind until he reached the outskirts leading towards the Everfree Forest. He decided to stop right at the edge of the forest, and turn around. Static wasn't too afraid of the forest, as he could easily fly away if he saw anything dangerous.

When Static was nearing the edge of the Everfree, he heard a shrill cry coming from the forest, and saw a small filly barreling out of the woods. The sudden sound had made the pegasus jump, but kept his ground and considered finding out what had made the filly scream like that.

As if Static's curiousity had been answered, a manticore had sprinted out after the filly. This sight almost made Static run away in sheer terror, but turned his attention towards the filly, who was being lifted off the ground by what looked like a griffon. Static knew he had to do something. He was either an innocent bystander watching the event like a movie, or be a hero and save the filly from the beast. And even if he couldn't ward the manticore away, at least he tried instead of pretending he wasn't there.

From deciding to ward off the manticore instead of checking on the filly with the griffon first, Static rushed up into the air to grab the only thing he could think of to scare off the manticore. Static then brought down a decent sized cloud, and with a deep breath and a prayer to Celestia, flew down dangerously close towards the manitcore. Static then drew the manticores attention towards him.

"Hey there, Mister Big and Scary, why don't you pick on somepony your own size!"

He then turned around in the air, his back legs facing the cloud, and let out a strong kick. A loud crack came from the cloud, and a bolt of lightning then raced out of the cloud towards the manticore, but instead of hitting him, it hit the ground directly in front of the monster, hoping to scare the manticore enough so it would retreat back into the forest.

"And there's more where that came from, you bully!"

Above the deserted streets of Ponyville, Sky Flare lay on a cloud, watching the night sky. It was then end of another busy day trying out new tricks and helping other ponies. Now before he returned home to Cloudsdale, he wanted to do a little stargazing.

The pegasus rolled over on the cloud in time to spot a filly running at a break neck speed out of the Everfree Forest.

"What's a filly doing out so late," he said to himself.

Suddenly Sky's question was answered as a manticore appeared behind the filly. Fortunately what looked like a griffon swooped down and grabbed the pony, taking it away from danger. But then he saw a pony facing the manticore alone. Letting a bolt fly from a cloud, Sky watched in anticipation to see what the manticore would do. If it wouldn't retreat to the forest, the pegasus would have to step in.

Ember was so frightened by the large and imposing looking beast with a long beak that she could not even speak when addressed. Her ears lay flat against her head and she shook all over in the griffin's claws. She had no idea what was going to happen, and yet still had no concept of anything past the 'now' and 'now' she was just too scared to think about anything elce. Her mouth gaped as she looked wide eyed at the mighty creature before her. Ember was stareing so intently that she never even noticed that she was in the air.

On the ground, the great manticore which was actually only a small baby manticore and not fullgrown, lept up in fright at the lightning and turned tail to run the other way back to it's home, at the edge of the forest it whined and looked back. it had only wanted to play with the small little thing, maybe bat it around a bit... stupid... mean... pony.

Razor snapped his claws infront of the filly, "Hey kid are you still awake? Come on, just say something and stop looking at me like that I'm not gonna eat you."

Razor got tired of the gaping mouth that he placed a claw under the fillies chin and slowly and gently pushed the mouth closed, after that Razor took to inspecting the filly for any injury. Ponies were fragile creatures so the least he could do was make sure the kid was okay. Once he was sure that the filly had no serious injuries he nodded.

"Alright. Let's try again, my name is Razor. What is yours, and more importantly why in the world are you out this late?" Razor asked, tapping his claw against the cloud with a look of bordem on his face.

Steam Gauge muttered a bit as he was walking away from the train station. He let out a small yawn as he looked towards the seemingly sleepy town. " well at least I got the work done early tonight." he smiled a little as he thought about the free time he has now. " well its still a bit too early to call it a night, might as well look for a nice empty spot to think of some ideas for my next invention." he thought to himself. Steam then wandered around the edge of the town untill he came to a clearing where on one side was ponyville and the other side was the everfree forest. " ahh.. perfect" he let out in a sigh as he laid on the grass enjoying the calm surroundings as he tried to think of some design ideas for his his project-to-be.

Steam was almost in a state of zoning until he heard an uproar come from the forest's edge. " oh Celestia, what was that?!?" he hopped up from his spot in the clearing and looks towards where he thought he heard the commotion, on instinct he ran towards the direction he was looking at only to see two ponies and a griffon. "w-whats going on here?" he let out in a low tone as if he was almost whispering it. he seemed startled to see that anypony else would be anywhere near the everfree at this hour.

Static Arc's scare tactic had worked! Static watched in victory as the manticore ran back into the forest, big scorpion tail between it's legs, but felt a little bad for scaring a creature off like that. After all, it's actions may not have meant harm, but he didn't want to take any chances though and try something else, as he didn't have much time to react.

After watching the creature retreat, Static left the cloud where it was and decided to check on the filly with the griffon. He flew up to the cloud where they were at and found the filly clutched in the griffon's talons, visibly afraid of the beast. As Static watched for a short time, he knew that griffon wasn't what you would call a great foalsitter. He was being too aggressive with the filly, talking to her like some sort of animal of something. This had made Static a little angry at his behaviour, but had understood in some way that the griffon probably wasn't used to talking care of small children and had no experience in the job.

Static then flew next to the griffon, hovering beside the cloud. Static then decided to voice his opinion on his understandably bad parenting.

"Hey buddy, mabye you should treat her with a little more ease in your tone so she isn't so afraid of you. Try to seem not so menacing towards her. And mabye put her back down on the ground? I don't think she likes heights too much. Here, let me show you how it's done."

He then flew a little closer towards the filly, and put on a friendly smile. He wanted to at least set a good example for the griffon. He then spoke in a soft, calm tone to address the filly. Static never really talked to a small child before, but had seen how over parents talked to their child through his walks around Ponyville, and tried that approach.

"Hey there, sweetie. It looks like somepony is lost. Did you lose your parents somewhere? Do you need help finding them, because I'm sure Mr. Feathers and I can help you out. Right, Mr. Feathers?"

He then noogied the top of the griffon's head, making his head feathers stand up in crazy angles and shapes. Hopefully that could put a smile on her face.

As Static was talking to the griffon and filly, he didn't seem to notice another pegasus watching nearby at the event, or the unicorn who had called out to them from below, as he had whispered his question and couldn't be heard by Static.

Sky watched nervously as the manticore stood there. He really didn't want to fight anything this evening, but if it meant helping a pony out he would give it his all. Thankfully the manticore ran back into the forest. The pegasus then noticed that a griffon had rescued the filly and was now also being attended to by the pony that sent the bolt at the manticore.

"Hey that was pretty good sending that bolt at the manticore like that," he said to the pegasus.

"And you were great rescuing theis filly too," he said to the griffon.

He looked at the filly who was shocked into silence.

"Err... I'm not an expert on fillies or colts, but I think that she may need some space after what haoppen. Maybe them she'll be willing to talk."

Steam slowly walked towards the three, letting out a somewhat loud gulp as he gets within hearing distance of them. he could hear his heart trying to jump out of his chest with each step he took.he even thought something was going to happen to him if he were to get too close, possibly a trip to the hospital, or worse...

"just say something! say it now!" kept going through his head, but his body was saying otherwise. all he did was walk closer with caution, or at least until he was so close he was a few steps behind the others. Steam tries to look past the three where he sees what looks like a little filly and then the shadow of something running back into the forest.

"W-what happened here?" he ask in a louder tone when he calmed down, but just a little.

All this strange attention was too much for poor Ember, she began to cry, loudly too. She snivvled and sobbed and wailed at the top of her small lungs. She didn't want to know anything really. in the back of her mind she knew that she was sumwhat safe, there were two pegasi that she had seen before this latest fit of hers, but only slightly. there was also that monsterious beast that held her as well.

eventually Ember's sobs that surely had soaked the feathers of the one holding her, desolved into more manageable wimpers that indicated she was somewhat calm at last.

{sorry for the short post, at the liberary. :\ }

Razor grabbed the pegasi that gave him a noggie with his free claw by the mane and pulled him close and said in a menacing and irritated voice, "Don't. touch. the feathers." After that he let him go.

"And don't call me Feathers, my name is Razor." He said, "and how am I being menacing?"

Razor noticed that he was now surrounded, and jumped when the filly started crying, and getting his feathers wet with salty tears.

'Great.' He thought but sighed and just held the crying filly, patting her back gently with a look of discomfort on his face, changing to relief when the sobbing finally stopped.

"Try not to cry any louder, or we will have the entire town awake," Razor said as he spread his wings and back flipped off the cloud, keeping the filly in his arms as he flew down swiftly to the ground and landed to the ground, right behind the pony on the ground that was calling up, "If you want to know, we just found this kid here running from the Everfree chased by a manticore. Don't know why, but this kid's surely got worried parents."

Razor set the filly down on the ground, wiping the tears from his feathers, "So kid. I'll ask again, who are you and where are your parents. I don't got all night."

After that Razor proceeded to preen his feathers for a small bit, to make sure they were aligned perfectly and healthy.

Static thought he was doing alright for being an in-the-moment foalsitter. He had finished giving the griffon a noogie, hopefully getting the child to laugh, a trick Static thought would work on small children.

After he had ruffled the griffon's feathers, he was grabbed by a free talon by the so called Razor, pulled out of the air and close to the face of the beast. After being threatened by the griffon by his display of playfulness towards the filly, he was released. This had made Static slightly more annoyed by Razor, he didn't like his attitude and how he was treating the filly and himself. He was being too rough in his opinion, and didn't have the slightest clue to how to take care of a filly. In his mind, he had thought of this as almost bullying the poor filly, and made his anger rise. As he spoke to the griffon, he had a hint of anger and annoyance in his voice, expressing his malice towards Razor

"I'll call you Feathers if I feel like it, buddy, and I think you're 'menacing' by how you're treating this filly. She shouldn't be..."

Before Static could continue, he was met by another pegasus who had apparently been watching the whole spectacle. He had commented on how he dealt with the manticore, which made Static feel better about his actions and increased his self-esteem, but flinched a bit when he was told to leave the filly be until she was ready to talk. Now, Static didn't know a lot about children, but he didn't think leaving the filly by herself would help. I mean, where would she be best to leave her? His house was far off in Cloudsdale, and the filly wasn't a pegasus. Thinking it over, he thought that mabye it would be best to get out of the sky and find her someplace to gather herself.

"Yeah, it might be okay to leave her so she can gather herself, but where would she go? We don't know where she lives!"

He then turned his attention to both Razor and the pegasus.

"Does any of you have a place where she could be left at so she could calm down?"

As soon as he asked this, he was startled by the sound of loud wailing by the filly. She was crying her little eyes out, obviously not appreciating the company she was getting. All of the voices was making her uncomfortable, and could only resort to crying in this situation. Static could only look at her, not sure how exactly he should handle this. All he could do was feebly try to ask her to calm down and tell her everything was okay. As the crying went on, Static could not hear the second call from the unicorn colt from below him, as even though he had called louder this time, he could not be heard by Static through the crying.

It took a few minutes, but she had finally started to calm down. Her loud wails had turned into whimpering and sniffling. Static had then tried something he probably shouldn't have, but what else could he do? He flew a little closer to the filly and started to run his hoof over the filly's head in a caring manner, whispering to her that it was alright, and that he, along with the help of the griffon and the new pegasus, would help find her parents, no matter how long it took. He somehow felt responsible for the filly, and felt like he needed to help her.

After a few minutes of that, he turned around and faced both the pegasus and the griffon.

"Soo... what now?"

Embermane sniffled as the griffion put her down, and tried not to run, not like she had any place to go that is... She sat back on her rump, that was quite bare, and flushed a bit as her stomach gave an unearthly growl. Ember hung her head, it had been a whole day since she had stopped to eat those weird flowers in the forest.

Ember looked up at the others when she was was asked something, and her face fell again. "n-no one misses... me" She hiccupped. She knew her aunt would never lie to her... "They... hate me..." She whined then as her head drooped lower. she was in trouble, she knew it. She didn't have to have a cutie mark to know this either, Her aunt had predicted it actually, just before she'd run away from home. She remembered the words her aunt had spoken, and the look in her mother's eyes that night as well, and she had ran. And ran. And ran, untill she could run no longer.

Suddenly the frightened filly burst into tears after the other pony and griffon started asking her questions. Either the filly was still frightened from the manticore or there was something else that was troubling her.

Before Sky Flare could ask, the filly finally spoke up saying something about a pony hating her.

"Alright there, calm down. You're safe. What's your name kid?"

Steam just stood there, listening and waiting as he heard the little filly cry, not once but twice. He felt sad for the little one as if he was in the same situation he would react the same exact way. he wanted to get closer but it seems like the filly was crying because of everyone else crowding her. so steam just stayed his distance, hoping that the little filly would be alright with the other three looking to help her.

Ember sniffled once more and wiped her eyes on one hoof, they were dry and iritated, but she could not stop crying lately. She looked toward the second pegasis and mumbled something that sounded like 'member-game' and hung her head.

She didn't want anyone to tell her parents where she was, infact, she didn't even think they cared anymore really. After all, her aunt would never lie...

Razor sighed, "Ugh. Look, Member-game or whatever, I don't know about the parents hating you thing. But however I do know it is late, I'm tired and I'm going to guess you're not from around here. So I'll jump the bush and just say, whose gonna give the kid a roof for the night, I think we would do much better in the morning."

Razor cracked his neck, "So who wants the kid?" Razor said as he stepped back a bit to give the filly some room.

As Static listened to the ponies around him, Static became less and less sure of himself about the moment. It didn't look like his trying to cheer up the filly was working too good. She still seemed upset, and Static's lack of foalsitting left him clueless about what to do next. The only thing Static could do was step back along with the griffon, just to give her some room, as the other pegasus had mentioned before. So that's what he did, giving the filly a little more breathing room.

After Razor had asked his question, he knew it couldn't be him. He lived up in Cloudsdale in a cloud house. If he brought the filly there, she would just fall through like any normal non-pegasus.

"Well, it can't be me. I live up in Cloudsdale, so I don't think that could work out. Hmm..."

Static was stumped and a little fatigued about the whole thing. Right now he just wanted to get home and get to bed, but the filly still needed help, and she wouldn't open up and them where she lived. The only thing he could think of doing at the moment was to find somepony who had a house who could take the filly in for the night.

Static looked around the area, stopping to look at the other ponies in the area. Razor obviously didn't want her, which was a complete surprise, and the other pegasus might also be from Cloudsdale and couldn't take her in either (which greatly interested Static. It was nice to meet a fellow pegasus, and might want to learn more about him, and possibly get a new friend, even though he was a little scared about the fact of talking to another pony), so he scanned the area, hoping to see somepony else who might be able to house this poor filly. As Static scanned the area, he could make out another pony in the near distance. A unicorn by the looks of it, and might have a house close here! Static cheered up a little, thinking he could help with this small dilemma, and decided to fly over to the unicorn under his common sense, forgetting about his shyness for a moment.

"Hey there, umm, we have a small problem over here and hopefully you could help us. Umm, do you have a house around here by any chance that could take another pony, specifically a small unicorn filly?"

Steam was in his own sadness as he thought about the little filly crying. it just kept playing over and over again in his head like a broken record. Steam just looked down at the ground. he stood where he was as he thought about the crying. just as he slowly started to turn around to walk away he heard one of the pegasi talk to him, causing him to break his concentration off of the crying replaying in his head. suddenly he started to feel like he was before this incident.

"oh hello there you need my help with something?" he asked as he didn't hear what the pegasus asked him before. it seemed like steam forgot about the event so far, but he did noticed the ponies and the griffon because he could never ever forget faces of ponies.. or creatures.. he has seen.

"by the way what happened to the other creature that was with you all?"

Ember just hung her head. She didn't want anyone to care for her but at the same time she didn't want to be on her own. She sniffled a few more times and thought about what her aunt had said. she perked up a bit and said to everypony around her. 'How... How do you get a cutie mark?" She was desperate to go home, as she missed her mother quite dearly, but the thought of her mother and father hateing her was the, worst. Possible. Thing. Ever.

she stared around at the croud who seemed to be ignoreing her as she was very small and they were all talking amungst themselves. Ember's face grew hot, she had a talent for changeing her moods in the blink of an eye, She raised her voice and practically yelled. "HOW DO I GET A CUTIE MARRRRK!!?"

Razor jumped when the filly screamed and he immediatly clamped his claw around her mouth to quit her, "Shhh! Geez kid, scream a little louder I don't think the rest of the world heard ya."

Razor took his claw away, "Frankly I don't know how you get a Cutie Mark, cause thankfully I don't have nor need one. Also, I think the major problem here right now is finding a place for you to stay, cause unless your parents live in town you're gonna be on the streets."

Razor turned from the kid and looked around, to the unicorn that was asking about the manticore, "The manticore is gone thankfully, but the big problem is this kid here. If any of you got a place where she can stay please speak up."

Razor waited and looked for any of the ponies to offer a roof for the kid, otherwise....he might have to do it instead.

'Oh brother, this night is gonna be a long one.' He thought.

The griffon was so willing to give the frightened crying pony over to someone to keep safe.

"Err... yeah. I live in Cloudsdale too, so unfortunately she can't go with me."

Sky Flare felt bad that the filly was so upset, but he was no mind reader and until she spoke up he was clueless to help. Suddenly the pony loudly proclaimed that she wanted her cutie mark.

"A cutie mark? Is that the reason why you were in the forest? You know you can find that easier than risking your life."

He then turned around to everypony else as he was willing to take the kid and give her a place to stay, even if it was only for a few days.

Steam looked around at the others as it just dawned onto him "oh by the way, what are all of your names?"

After Static had called out to the unicorn in the distance and waited for his response, he turned back towards the filly and thought about what she must be thinking about this. Three ponies and a griffon all talking around her, all of them strangers and obviously disturbed about something. She did mention something about her parents before, so mabye it had to do something with that? Then again, why was she coming out of the forest in the first place if she had a family? Did they live in there? Did she decided to run away from home and camp out in the Everfree? Many thoughts and possibilities swam through the pegasi's head, and only made him eve more exhausted than he already was.

Static yawned for a long while, and teetered a bit on his legs as if they were going to give out.

I need to get home or else I'll fall over. I'll think more clearly when I get some rest.

Static was then snapped out of his stupor and became more alert when the filly started yelling about getting a cutie mark. He jumped about an inch of the ground and unfurled his wings, propelling him into the air. His heart skipped a beat as he was now airborn, surprised by the sudden cries from the filly. It had taken Static a little bit to calm himself down, and managed to get himself back on the ground.

"Ok! Ok, I'm awake now! Umm, anyway, about the cutie mark, you normally get it by doing something you like, but I don't think getting it by trekking through the Everfree Forest is the best idea. Do you have any hobbies or do you like to do anything that you have passion in?"

Static had then heard the response by the unicorn, who had apparently not heard him when he asked. He had agreed to take in the filly, though not a resident of Ponyville by the sounds of it. Static was happy that the filly might have a chance at a home for the night, but a little sad that it wasn't him. Why did he have to live in Cloudsdale? Anyway, Static turned toward the unicorn stallion and gave him a smile.

"Alright, none of us apparently have a house to take in the filly, so I guess she will go with you. Hopefully she will be in good hooves with you. Where exactly will you be staying so that I could check up on her in the morning? Oh, and the name's Static Arc by the way. Umm, nice to meet you."
