Elian Swiftwing trotted through the park with his bookbag strapped to his shoulder. It was heavy and weighing him down a bit but he needed to be away from home to read these books. These were books about magic. He'd managed to find a seller in the marketplace who only came once a year. He asked for the books specifically because he'd read about them before. The seller looked confused but sold him the books anyway.

Eli had saved his allowence for months to afford these. He couldn't let his parents know about his dream.

Eli, of course, was not able to perform magic. Not yet. He was a pegasus but had no interest in flying. He wants to cast spells. It's all he dreams of, all he desires. So he reads. Reads to find the answers. Reads to find out if it really is possible for magic to change a pony's species.

The young colt sat down by a tree, taking off his bookbag and beginning to read one of the books. A book entitled "Transformation Spells". He hoped no bullies would find him here. That was the last thing he needed today. Bullies were always finding him but he couldn't understand why. He was a poor flier but he had no interest in flying. He was weak but he didn't need to be strong. Why pick on him?

He didn't know. Instead he burried his muzzle in his books, focussed on the words.

Could there really be a way? A way to change a pony's species....?

A grey unicorn colt watched the pegasus sit down under the tree. He looked down on the pegasus, having been hiding in the upper branches. He sat, waiting to see what the unicorn would do.

River Song lay belly down on the grass, dipping a hoof into the lake in front of her. It had been a long day before her, and the filly just needed to relax. River was tired, having stayed out too late last night by the lake. Did I bring my pipe? The unicorn raised her head and glanced back at her saddlebag. With a bit of concentration, she lifted the flap of the bag and mentally rummaged around until she found what she wanted. The slender reed pipe gently hovered into her hooves and she stroked it lovingly. River had made it herself, and she was proud of it too. There had been many failed attempts before this one- way too many. They either blew too high, like the screeching of a horn on a chalkboard, or too low and windy, reminiscent of an owl from the Everfree forest. But this was just right.

She sat back and played a little scale on the pipe to warm up, and once she was ready she blew a little haunting melody. The notes danced around her ears, making them twitch in pleasure, and she closed her eyes in contentment. Suddenly, the flow of the music was disrupted by the tell tall clip clops of another pony approaching. Startled, she dropped her pipe and glanced back, only to see a pegasus trotting past with what seemed to be a bag full of books. Nothing odd about that. Many ponies liked to use the park to relax or pursue their own hobbies. What was odd was the title of the book.Transformation Spells? Aren't those supposed to be really hard? And he wasn't even a unicorn! She didn't seem to be the only pony who was curious, for several other ponies had already gathered around to talk to him.

Still, the pegasus was entitled to his own hobbies, why should she judge? A pegasus attempting magic was like a mute trying to make a song. Forcing herself away, she once more raised the pipe to play, but she barely got in four bars before the chatter from the side disrupted her.

River paused in her playing, the notes dying off as she lowered the pipe. She had the odd feeling that somepony was staring at her. Warily, the filly lifted her head to glance around the lake. There, by the pegasus with the magic books, a mare had detached herself from the bunch and had her eyes on her. River tilted her head slightly, wondering why. Am I disturbing them? She mused, before shrugging. I'll just play softer then.

Lifting the pipe to her lips once more, she continued the melody where she had left off- only softer so as to not bother the others.
