Jasper Loops (Ready)

Recommended Posts

Roleplay Type: Mane RP

Name: Jasper Loops

Sex: Male

Age: Stallion

Species: Crystal Pony

Eye colour: Brown

Coat: His coat, like all crystal ponies, is shiny and translucent, although, it somehow manages to look slightly duller than the average crystal pony's coat. The colour of his coat is a light green, almost teal-looking. He often wears a dark, red tie as well as a set of frameless spectacles.

Mane/Tail: Jasper's mane and tail are straight, almost rigid, and short. They are a simple, brown colour.

Physique: Jasper has an average build for a pony.

Residence: Crystal Empire

Occupation: Bureaucrat

Cutie Mark: An abacus. Jasper's cutie mark came later than most of the other crystal ponies his age. But unlike some other fillies and colts, Jasper was patient. Maybe it was due to his upbringing by his parents, who were part of the Crystal Empire elite. Showing unrestrained enthusiasm simply wasn't done, and so he didn't do it. It was pretty easy for him. So, he waited and waited. Then, one day, he was given an opportunity to participate in a group project for a contest with fillies and colts his age. This was the first time he had interacted with a group of fillies and colts his own age from all different backgrounds, considering he was privately tutored and only got to interact with the foals of his parents' high society friends. He wanted to do well on the project, but he also wanted to make some friends. Making friends was the hard part. The other fillies and colts found his demeanor just a bit... odd. But as soon as it became clear that nopony had any idea what to do on the project, how to get started, and how to follow through with so many instructions, Jasper stepped up to the plate. He gave each member of the group a responsibility, he calculated how long that responsibility would take and gave them a deadline, he analyzed current trends in foal group projects, he wrote reports on each filly and colt's progress on their responsibilities for the project, and then when each pony had completed their responsibility... he gave each of them a stamp of approval. Literally. It was an actual stamp of approval.

The project was finished and given a red ribbon for third place. The ponies in Jasper's group warmed up to him a bit, even if he did act a bit strange. And best of all, Jasper finally got his cutie mark. The abacus on Jasper's flank symbolizes his talent in keeping track of a large number of tasks, being organized, and perhaps alludes to his uncanny ability to count things.

History: Jasper was born into a life of luxury and privilege. As a colt, he was always well-behaved, well-mannered, and never stepped one hoof out of line. He loved following the rules, and it never even crossed his mind that any rule could be broken, or at least gotten around. Needless to say, this got him something of a reputation as a party-pooper and spoiled sport among other fillies and colts his age. This changed a slight little bit after he got his cutie mark, and ponies his age began to realize that a constant rule-follower wasn't really all that bad.

When he became a stallion, his parents pushed him into a job planning social gatherings and parties, but they soon discovered that he wasn't all that good at it. The fact of the matter was that he excelled at organizing and planning so well that any fun that could be had at the parties he planned was practically non-existent, and if a little bit managed to slip through the cracks, it was horribly awkward. Jasper wasn't quite sure he enjoyed it, either, because he felt like he was ruining other ponies' sense of fun (not that it was all that big in some of the snobbier ponies' to begin with, which really said something about how un-fun the parties and social gatherings turned out). With some reluctance, Jasper's parents turned him loose to let him determine what his cutie mark was telling him about his destiny.

With little delay, Jasper set up “shop” in the Market District in an office that he owns, runs, and operates. It is a simple, small building with the words “Department of Planning and Organization.” Here Jasper loans his services, whether it's his opinion on where to build a road, what it would take to set up an event, organizing one's personal calendar, counting ewes, projecting the yield for next year's crystal berry harvest, or filling out complicated and large amounts of paperwork. Jasper found job satisfaction in the most boring but most necessary of jobs.

And shortly after, the Crystal Empire went through dark and troubling times. The impact it's had on Jasper is hard to figure out since he acts much the same as he always did. Every now and then, though, when he glances at a set of stairs and automatically counts the steps, he gives the stairs a second glance... and shudders. After a thousand years of dormancy, Jasper has figured that now would be as good a time as any to experience more of what life has to offer. And so, when he's not working and saving up his bits, he's being a tourist (and a rather obvious tourist at that).

Character Summary: Jasper is more often than not mistaken for a wealthy, snobby stuffed shirt pony. While wealth might have been characteristic of his colthood, it is not characteristic of his adulthood since he makes an average wage (his parents were only a little devastated at this turn of events). The mistake, then, mostly comes from how he acts. He speaks in a droning monotone, which turns pretty much every normal exclamation of surprise, excitement, and interest into what sounds like deadpan sarcasm. He doesn't laugh at jokes or funny situations. On the rare occasions he does smile, it looks forced and fake. The tie and spectacles don't help the impression he makes on other ponies.

The truth is that how he acts is just part of who he is, and the interpretation of him being snobby and uncaring is completely wrong. His voice just naturally comes out in a droning monotone, so even when he IS genuinely excited and surprised, he doesn't sound like it. And the reason his expression constantly conveys a serious frown is because he's self-conscious about smiling. He fully believes that he has not mastered the technique of smiling. The fact that he thinks smiling takes practice probably explains the reason why his smiles, while being genuine at heart, look forced and fake.

And why doesn't he laugh at jokes and funny situations? Humor has always been a hard concept for him to grasp. He tends to take things too literally and over-analyzes the jokes/situations he's presented with. Jasper believes in planning and keeping things organized. He always has a Plan A, a Plan B, a Plan C, a Plan D, a Plan H-35c, etc. He loves following rules, dotting i's, crossing t's, and stamping things. He actually carries a stamp of approval around with him... just in case. He also enjoys counting things. He has an uncanny ability at being able to look at a great number of objects and count them in an instant. He can glance at a pony's mane and count exactly how many hairs are there. He can look at a jar of jelly beans and instantly tell somepony exactly how many jelly beans are in the jar as well as exactly how many of each coloured bean there are. This has been very useful in his job, but probably seems pointless and annoying anywhere else.

Needless to say, Jasper finds it difficult to make friends, but it is something that he wants to do. As much as it doesn't look like it, Jasper likes being in the company of other ponies, he likes seeing and doing new things, and he doesn't even actually mind getting his hooves dirty, although, he probably wouldn't see much point in it. Jasper might find it a little easier to make friends elsewhere in the world; if only because he's laboring under the impression that tourists MUST wear awful, jarring pieces of clothing. This means that when he's in a different part of the world he wears a hideous red tie... with FLORAL print.
