Short Fuse [Ready]

Recommended Posts

Name: Short Fuse - Mistress of the Fire Flower

Gender: Female

Age: Mare

Species: Unicorn

Eye colour: Silver, with one eye being a eyepatch due to a childhood accident. Under the patch is a small hidden explosive.

Character colour: Blackish silver, similar to light gunpowder. She has scars all over the front of her body and face. Ponies would pity her, but she saw it as having a bit more personality!

Mane/Tail/Other: Red and orange, almost looking like fire. Her mane is medium length and kinda messy, but rather presentable most of the time. Her tail is usually the same. Her mane is sometimes singed due to explosions or tests with new compounds.

Physique: Thin, almost frail looking, but she isn’t entirely weak. She can run pretty fast and is decently athletic of a mare her build. She can at the very least run fast and far.

Residence: Aboard the pirate vessel FreeWing traveling the seas and skies of Equestria

Occupation: Demolitions expert for FreeWings

Cutie Mark: A tiger lily outlined in flames.

Unique Traits: Knowledge of volatile elements and explosives. Able to incite chemical reactions using magic, and activate incendiary devices remotely using magic. Also able to create small contained explosions using magic that look like flower petals (though they aren't as exciting or fun as the devices or explosives created). She also keeps an explosive under her eye patch.

History: Short Fuse was born to a relatively common family in Hoofington. Her father was a chemist/alchemist who would often create medicines for hospitals or for ponies or creatures just looking for general remedies. Her mother worked backstage of the local theater doing special effects and stage work if they needed help. Short Fuse spent most of the time home with her mother, as her father always seemed to be working. He’d be home on the weekends and at night, but because her mother’s job allowed her more time at home they spent a lot of time together. Her mother loved theatrics and jokes and that rubbed off on Short Fuse who was already a handful at that point, which is how she got her name. She’d be seemingly fine one minute then burst into a fit of energy like a bomb.

School life for her was pretty standard, made friends, everyone seemed to love her eccentric personality and jokes. She was basically the class clown. She didn’t play pranks, usually, but she’d be sarcastic, make up stories, and generally get people to laugh and be the center of attention. She always had a few friends around. She must have inherited her father’s brains because she excelled in most sciences and math most of all, and was pretty terrible at any artistic or history based classes. The latter more because they were boring than difficult for her. Like most fillies that age she had no idea why she was still a blank flank. Then the teacher announced that they’d have a day off to go to their parent’s job and would be allowed to choose. Naturally she chose to go with her father, since designy type things didn’t really interest her.

Her father brought her into her lab and showed her around, naturally telling her not to touch or play with any of the compounds. This was a simple enough instruction. And she did it, except for getting a glass of water. She figured ‘What harm could water do?’ She put it down and it knocked over into a dish of powdered potassium which made a small explosion. Shocked by this and also excited she jumped back and her father went to see if she was alright. He didn’t really yell at her because how was she to know that dust would do that? But he did tell her to be more careful… But she loved the explosion. She became obsessed with them. She began researching them, chemicals and everything she could. Eventually she started trying to mix things herself to get violent exothermic reactions, which eventually turned into explosive reactions. She learned that some mixtures were volatile and would explode readily and others needed something. She kept mixing and tinkering with things that she read in books and eventually became rather good at mixing, some would say too good. She made a really stable high explosive compound one day that wouldn’t ignite no matter what she did. She tried some of the more unstable ones but they wouldn’t make it go off. She had figured she had failed. She went off in a fit of anger yelling at it and her horn started glowing and from it came a little small explosion that resembled a tiger lily flower. And it went off in a huge explosion, unfortunately because she was yelling at it she wasn’t behind her shield or at a safe distance. Her mother heard the explosion and rushed her to the hospital.

She was quickly treated with her mother and father both yelling at her for doing such dangerous mixtures, but she was too shaken from the explosion. She was left with scars on her face and her right eye was damaged beyond repair due to shrapnel. So they had to remove it leaving her with a cavity that she had to cover with an eyepatch. When the shock wore off she was ecstatic. What an explosion! And SHE made it go off with her magic. After she went back to school her friends were worried about her and did the usual triad, telling her that she didn’t look THAT bad, and that the eyepatch even looked kinda cool. One of them however looked past the scars and noticed that Short Fuse had her cutie mark. In all that time she hadn’t noticed, she just kept thinking about that awesome explosion and that she could make smaller ones and set things off with her magic.

Since she was so good and loved reading she started making small explosives and traps using her more stable compounds because well… She read about pirates and zombies. She made contingency plans for both. Everyone called her a bit nuts for making a zombie pony plan and a pirate plan. But she was undeterred! She also began practicing her explosion technique more so she could use it (which was rather hard with her impaired depth perception, but she eventually got it). Her parents were none too happy but she didn’t mind.

She eventually became one of Hoofington’s leading pyrotechnicians, making fireworks and stage displays for bands, and plays. She was really good at making conventional pretty displays, but she loved making big explosions more. She took to keeping a small explosive device in her eye cavity under her eyepatch, I mean if anything it would be great for an impromptu demonstration or defense against some creature or something (you never know when you’ll see your first zombie pony and she’d be ready darn it!).

And then it happened…. An airship appeared flying a Jolly Roger flag! It was her moment of triumph! Everyone thought she was crazy and those stories were fake and would NEVER happen. She quickly took out her emergency explosive and used her magic to throw it at the pirate captain who had disembarked. Little did she know that it was Gangplank of the FreeWing pirates, who was just following up on a rumor that a talented pyrotechnician lived there [short Fuse] and had no nefarious intentions what so ever. In fact while Short Fuse was running setting off all the traps, he was strolling and taking note that this was probably the pony he was looking for.

When all the traps were set off he finally approached her offering her a position as the FreeWing pirates, explaining who the FreeWing pirates were and what they were all about (Freedom and fun, with a side of thievery and hijinx). She liked most of those things, and not having people tell you “no that’s too dangerous to make, you’ll blow out your other eye or worse” would be a nice perk. In fact they’d probably encourage that! She was sold! She accepted the position and boarded the ship to live a life of adventure, intrigue and fun. It suited her almost perfectly! And thus her new life as a pirate had begun. Because of her unique talent of creating flower shaped explosions, the crew quickly took to calling her "Mistress of the Fire Flower."

Character Summary:Short Fuse lives up to her name, she is a short fuse. She doesn’t get angry but she explodes with energy. This can be directed in any way at almost any time, and it usually manifests in her eccentricities, or in just messing with crewmembers or others. She is quick with her tongue and it is almost as explosive as her works of art. She loves her crew members and being free. Her captain is her moral compass though. She respects his wishes, usually, even if she wants to do something different, after all he was the one to offer her freedom from monotony and entrance into the great big world.

Explosives are her life, but that isn’t all there is to her. She loves reading (though admittadly, she loves reading things about new explosives or compounds she can use to make bigger, better or otherwise new explosions). She also loves music, granted though her concept of music is skewed since she thinks that explosions are music if done right. She’ll even intentionally create in her lab small contained explosions of different sizes and set them off in tandem to create what she calls “explosive music.” This doesn’t always please her crew as they sometimes think they are under attack. But they don’t mind because she does get the job done and well. She even developed new and more efficient black powder for the captain’s flintlock pistol, creating a container system even so that it can be reloaded even quicker and easier.

Her biggest flaw is her disregard for her own safety. So long as no one is around her she’ll take a few shortcuts and take more risks. She doesn’t do this on the ship, but usually when they are docked and she has room and freedom. She isn’t as reckless as she was when she was a filly, but it is still dangerous nonetheless.

She is fiercely loyal to those she considers friends or family, and to her the crew of the FreeWing are her family. She still remembers her parents but they are so far away now. If she ever meets them again she’d probably run the other way. How do you tell your parents you became a pirate for the sake of freedom anyway? If she ever met them as a pirate though she’d make sure that they were kept safe though.
