Recently I've been studying Europe and have seen many similarities between it and the fim universe one reason was the armor worn in the show resembles that of the armor the spartains wore as well as the large rule of monarchy so I have a bit of a theory and my theory is that the FiM series takes place in that univeses equivelent of europe and therefore placing equestria girls somewhere in modern day Europe

I've also had a theory on how Luna and celestia raise the sun and moon and that theory is that it is not a complicated spell infact it is only a simple levitation spell hense the unicorns being able to raise the sun and moon in the early times of equestria

well the different time periods may be true but your argument about the railway system is invalid as the steam engine and railway systems were invented in the industrial age of europe and the super speedy cider squeezy was powered by magic as they said in the song therefore debunking that but the heart monitors will require some more research before i can answer about that

In regards to advancement of technology? Well, we see arcade booth style video games in... Hearts and Hooves Day, I think? EKG machines in Flight to the Finish. A hoof held buffing machine plugged into... something, in that same episode. Portable flashlights exist in Read it and Weep. Film projectors in Hurricane Fluttershy. This puts them at our technological level, at least in some aspects, but not others.

I would assume this is because magic exists. Necessity is the mother of invention, after all and with two thirds of the standard populous being the X-Men at times, there wasn't a pressing need for a lot of things that humans with our filthy muggle hands cannot do without. But just like with our technology, advances in some things lead to applications in other fields. I can guarantee that the EKG machine was designed and patented before the video game console was. The green and silver insides somepony was tinkering with in their garage and then BAM. Pong. But it does make me wonder why we don't see some things. Like radio, for instance. Not even television! Radio, man. Maybe there isn't a need for one with so many traveling bards around, but c'mon. Communication, with or without magic, is kinda a big deal. Not everypony has a messenger dragon and correspondence between AAAAAAAAAAPPALOOSA and Cloudsdale may need to arrive in minutes, rather than days.

As for why no guns, well, with the magic excuse already played, maybe the society as a whole is just nicer than ours. Friendship isn't just an orbital death laser, but a core value that founded an entire nation. I've seen fanfiction where it's a punishable offense to 'willfully reject an offer of friendship'. It's just a nicer and more optimistic world without much need for advances in weaponry. Though it does make me wonder about something like black powder. What was the motive behind making it if not for killing each other?

I'll stop rambling now.

Gunpowder, prior to it's extensive recognition as a weapon, was used for a variety of things in China, such as fireworks, quack medicine, and alchemical hurr durr. That was, until they discovered they could make big bang with it.

Moving away from that, I'd have to agree with the above, that necessity is the mother of invention. And because of magic and wings, necessity kinda died. The only reason for advanced medical technology is that magic can only take you so far, and plus it's taxing to have to mend wounds with magic, if possible at all, and may not be as effective on diseases. Radio and TV? Nope. Why? Fast Pegasi couriers, plus trains, worked before, and still works. Swords and spears? Tried, tested, and still effective against 99% of enemies (0.01% being Changeling infiltration).

There has been no "push" to Equestrian society to technologically develop, or pursue any form of extensive modernisation. Given their nature, and the events of Hearth's Warming Eve. Plus, depending on which part of Equestria you're in, technology can differ. Look at the difference between Manehatten, Canterlot, Ponyville, and Cloudsdale, as described by canon. Each are in their own level of societal and technological understanding.

Just look at the ponies as alien race, like you would for any other sci-fi medium with aliens. Break them down into their core components as a race, and one will see that they're happy and content as they are.

I get the impression that advanced technology is not widespread and in general created and used by specialists. If there is one pony whose talent is making video game cabinets and he does it one at a time this is why there aren't many around.

I think as the show has gone on techology is on the rise which is why we see things like the hydroelectric dam and larger construction projects.

In Vatican the army still goes arround with Muzzle loading muskets, that's a thing called tradition... Also Equestria seems to hinge in a Colectivist/Socialist alike system, Medical systems seem quite modern because life is well respected, but any automation sort of inventions (the kind that get workers unemployed) seem unexistant besides the Cider Squeezy 6000... And we know how that gone...

Yes. I like this treatment.

A curiosity, though. Considering Celestia and Luna are governing the two largest heavenly bodies visible, where does that leave astronomy? Twi has her little book report on comets, plus the meteor shower. There are telescopes. But is it at all conceivable that the drive to leave the planet will arise?

And I'm not asking because I'm working on an appropriately themed RP. Honest.
