Roleplay Type: World of Equestria

Name: Lightout

Sex: Male

Age: Young Stallion

Species: Unicorn

Eye colour: Blue

Coat: Lightout's coat is a shade of pale Yellow and normally lacks a good clean. While it is never dirty, it never 'looks good' as such.

Mane/Tail: Lightout's mane is cut short but isn't quite cut down to the extremes of a crew cut. It looks untidy and gives the pony a frazzled look. His tail meanwhile, is long and looks just as scruffy and untended. It is quite clear he doesn't care much about what he looks like. They are both coloured cyan.

Physique: Lightout is not a physical pony and as such, has never seemed to form much of a physique. He's skinny, but not quite sickly. He also seems to be slightly shorter than the average stallion.

Residence: Canterlot. He has a store known as 'Potions of Peculiarity' which is located a ways off the main high street. His laboratory is located in the basement of the store where he brews his potions and he lives on the upper floor which just consists of two rooms. One for sleeping and another for cooking, eating and entertaining.

Occupation: Alchemist

Cutie Mark: Lightout got his cutie mark shortly after he discovered the wonders of alchemical science. The complexities and intricacies of potion making fascinated the young pony and his desire to learn more led him to enroll in Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. With a specific focus on alchemy requested, the young unicorn was tasked with making a potion to impress the entrance examiners. Lightout studied long and hard until the day finally came when he would have to demonstrate his potion making skills. He chose a simple and useful potion, after watching his father at the forge, designed to protect the drinker from intense heat. On the day of the exam, he demonstrated a crude but efficient grasp of the concepts of potion making and magic. He successfully brewed the potion and cast the necessary spells. His test subject daintily put their hoof to a red hot stove, to no effect on that pony's health. Although it was only temporary, Lightout realised he had just made a pony's life a lot better. Not only that, surely he'd made a pony better? He earned his cutie mark that day, the symbol of an alchemical flask containing a double helix. It was only later that he discovered his talent was not just making potions, but specifically potions that altered a pony's physical attributes in some way.

History: Lightout was born in Canterlot to his father Copper-hammer and his mother Lamplight. He has an older sister called Lightswitch. His father is a smith by trade and has his own business making horseshoes, tools and materials which he sells to those who are willing to pay. His mother works as a nurse at Canterlot hospital. While Lightout was never actively quarreling with his father, they never seemed to quite connect as a father and son should. He was always at the forge and didn't understand his son's fascination with the Alchemical Sciences. It never stopped him from trying to bond and while they have an awkward relationship, they are still family. Lightout had a bitter sibling rivalry with his sister who studies history and is currently employed in the Canterlot archive as a historical archivist. They fell out many times with arguments over the smallest of things. Their typical sibling relationship evolved into something much more stable after Lightout earned his cutie mark. While the two don't exactly see eye to eye, they support each other as far as they can. Lightout's time in Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns remains some of his happiest memories. He made friends, learned his trade and discovered a real enthusiasm for the alchemical arts. After achieving journeyman status, he embarked on a mission to travel Equestria and ply his trade. Lightout suffered much on the journey from perilous monsters and brigands. Eventually he gave up his quest and settled for a quiet life in Canterlot, selling his wares. Lightout's frailty proved to be distressing to him, ever since he's been obsessed with the idea of achieving immortality through alchemy. He has already learnt and achieved much in the field of physical alteration potion making, who says immortality isn't achievable?

Character Summary:

Lightout's main ability lies in his potion making. He can brew up just about any minor potion, his true talents lie in potion that physically change genetic structure. With a bit of magic and a bit of science, Lightout can craft special potions that can give ponies abilities they otherwise wouldn't have access to. All of these effects are temporary though. Most of these potions cause an amount of pain and discomfort to the drinker since they are essentially forcefully morphing their bodies using a strange blend of chemicals and magic. He can also whip up cures to diseases, distil healing draughts, mix potent poisons and craft explosive concoctions. The latter of which take the form of firelances, or as we know them, fireworks. Of course, his use for such things is limited, but ponies always seem to want them for parties.

Lightout is obsessed with the prospect of attaining eternal life which is the main focus of his research. This is the sole reason why he is interested so much in the alchemical arts. He seems to have deluded himself into thinking if he gains immortality, he will be safe forever.

Lightout likes to play it safe. He desires a calm collected atmosphere where he can better concentrate on his research. In his spare time he goes to musicals and spends time reading books. He rarely leaves the bounds of Canterlot and if he does he will plan his rout meticulously and be sure that nothing will harm him on the journey. Lightout likes order, peace and quiet. Risks are something just not worth taking. No matter how small.

Lightout is quiet and reserved, often guarded about the nature of his research as academics tend to be. Once you get him talking, he loves discussing alchemy with those interested in the science. He is a friendly soul who tries to enthuse about others when he can, however he's spent too much time in the library to be able to properly socialise with other ponies. For those of a lesser intellect, he can often be seen as demeaning or posh because of his knowledge. He is however, scared senseless of the prospect of death. This can lead to him being distracted by the risks and dangers of others. His mother taught him to care for all living beings so he tends to worry about his friends a little too much. For all his loyalty as soon as it comes down to life or death, he will be compelled to flee for his own fear of self preservation.

Lightout lacks any physical toughness or stamina and will be quickly worn out at even the lightest physical exertion. He is quick to anger and will often act very defensively if provoked. He hates sports and those who enjoy sporting activity. He also hates fashion and those that follow it. Both of which have unfairly earned his wrath. Anything he deems as useless is quickly discarded before it can even be given a chance. Anything he deems as risky to his health, is also quickly discarded before it can be given even a try.
