Today had been a pretty typical day for the brown unicorn sitting in the semi-large office. Dox, or 'Rising Star' as his students knew him, had finished the day's classes at this point and was simply going through some assignments and having some office hours in case of questions. He looked between the papers, grading them rather quickly as his eyes darted around the pages, though he was somewhat distracted by the thought of getting back to that learning spell Rose had given him. He still had more he wanted to study about it, and he was eager to see what it would learn and turn into through the process. He enjoyed his meetings with her, they usually produced interesting results and he always liked the chance to compare notes with a fellow pursuer of scholarly pursuits. Soon enough, he was done with all the paperwork and pulled a book off his shelf to pass the time.

Somewhere in between 'now' and 'then', something changed in his environment. Well, changed wouldn't quite be the right word- displaced would be better. As a unicorn, he could likely feel the change in the air, even if there was no light or sound to herald its arrival.

'It' being a non-descript black box, just large enough to house a small accessory. With just basic senses, he couldn't detect anything overtly magical from inside, although a dedicated check without opening it would reveal there was something in there of note.

There was a small card slipped in between the two halves of the box, and if he retrieved it, he would see, in fancy flowing Andalusian script: Happy Hearth's Warming ~

The letters flowed in a spectrum of colors, like the writer had used rainbows instead of ink.

Dox could feel the disturbance as it happened, looking over at the box for a moment to determine if it was a threat. Initial scans told him it contained something magical, and looking deeper suggested it was sent by Rose. He didn’t really think she’d attack him, especially since she didn’t know what he actually was as far as he could tell. She was definitely willing to work with him, in any case.

With that checked out, he finished the section of his book before actually physically approaching the box. He smiled slightly as the note confirmed the sender, then opened up the box to see what she had sent to him.

Inside, nestled on a monochrome cushion, was a little charm. It appeared to have been hoof-carved out of a silvery-gray metal with the makings of alchemy, shaped into a mare standing upright. Her forelegs were raised above her, with intricate wings framing an arc above her head. As the box was opened, a miniature rainbow highlighted the arc like a chromatic aurora.

"It's called the Indalo Mare," Rose's spoke up. It sounded like she was right next to him, but a quick check would confirm she was only speaking telepathically. "It's a good luck charm from the Llamería province. Andalusia."

"Some ponies believe it is a link between the physical and spiritual worlds," she went on, her voice travelling the room as if she were physically present. "Whilst others see it as a representation of a guardian spirit. It was actually found, thousands of years ago, scrawled onto the back of a cave. This figure... Primitive equines seeking wisdom and truth in the universe. It made me think of you."

Dox hummed slightly as he examined the charm. It was clearly well-made, and quite intricate, so it was a good decoration if nothing else. The sudden appearance of Rose’s voice made him jump a little bit, looking around to confirm she wasn’t actually there before realizing it really was just in his head. He huffed before turning his attention back towards the charm and listening to the explanation.

All in all, it seemed like a wonderful present, despite that ending statement possibly calling him primitive. She probably just meant the seeking truth and wisdom part being like him though, and he could appreciate that. For now, he lifted the gift out the box with his magic to give it a closer examination. Especially if it was something he was to wear or if it was something you put on a desk or shelf. Either way, he’d have to send Rose a thank you of some kind.

The 'guardian spirit', upon closer examination, seemed to possess a simple but powerful protection enchantment. Simply having it on his person would protect him from a myriad of environmental and artificial hazards, from magic attacks to corrosive swamps. It seemed to operate on an abstract level, however- something rarely seen in modern magic.

"I spent over a thousand years searching for ways to keep creatures alive," Rose continued, and a note of melancholy tainted her tone. "Necromancy. Animancy. Alchemy. So many failures... "

If allowed, images would flash through his mind like a film. Experiments of every nature, often on ponies but other creatures as well. Many of them did not end well for the subject.

"Eventually I came to the conclusion that a little bit of enchantment and alchemy both would work. Nothing of this earth or otherwise will easily bring you harm.

May it serve you well, Rising Star ~"
