(Author's note: Partheus is a human messenger who found himself in Equestria after he was attacked by bandits and was forced to find shelter. After spending a week in Ponyville Hospital, he's now on his feet waiting for his wounds to properly heal, then he can go back on his way. He is currently travelling across Equestria to learn more about it's culture, mythology and history. Hence why he is trespassing in Gravel's ruins...)

Partheus stood still, daring not to set another foot forward lest he knocked over another stone. Darn, he thought, looks like I'm not alone here. He slowly reached into his satchel, and pulled out a knife, making sure not to rustle any of the satchel's contents in doing so. He held the knife in a reverse grip, ready to jab the knife into whatever sprung forwards from around the corner. He cautiously edged around the corner to see a gorgon-like pony sitting atop a ruined pillar. There's no way I can defeat that, he thought. It'll just turn me to stone. Perhaps I can reason with it...

Seeing no point in keeping up the stalemate, Partheus walked out from behind the wall, holding his hands up behind his head. "I mean you no harm, gorgon. I am merely a traveller, seeking to know more about Equestria." He tenaciously bent down and placed his knife on the floor beside his feet. "I lay down my arms to show that I am a man of my word. Now, gorgon, will you allow me passage through your ruins?"

Gravel hissed."Okay but it looks like you are very tired. Why don't you just go to sleep?"She said slyly.Gravel slithered up to him slowly."Okay just lay down in that corner and sleep."She siad then she stared into his eyes using her magic to slowly turn him to stone.

Partheus felt his entire body being slowly consumed by a strange numbing sensation, starting from his feet and working it's way up his body. He couldn't move; the gaze of the gorgon was too intense to break free from. Soon, he was petrified from the waist down, all hopes of escape gone by this point. "There...has... to be... a way... out... of this..." The numbing sensation came to his torso and up his arms, freezing them in a position akin to a rabbit caught in headlights. This is it, he thought as the numbing sensation crawled up his neck, everything I've achieved in this short life gone because I got cocky. He shed a single tear as the spell finally enveloped his head, rendering his entire body a statue.

However, something unexpected happened, or rather, didn't happen. Well, he thought. This is odd. I thought you were supposed to die from petrification. Somehow, I'm still conscious. He could still see through his stony eyes, still staring into the gorgon's eyes, unable to move his eyes at all. His ears worked too; he could still hear the eerie wind that blew through the ruins that were probably going to be his new permanent place of residence. The tear that he shed rolled off his cold cheek like a pebble, falling to the ground and resting beside his knife.

((You will soon be unpetrified but it may take a bit.))

Gravel half hissed half laughed."Foolish human!Us gorgons use trickery to catch our prey. Now I'll go out to hunt you stay here!"She said as she slithered off.As Gravel exited the ruins her evil smile turned into a frown.I wasn't always like this!I used to be a beutiful pony but that damned princess cursed me!Only because I was on her sisters side I would rather be on the moon at least I would not be a horrifing monster.Gravel thought sadly. But then she regained her smile."Some day I will have my revenge!Someday I will turn her to stone and Luna will rule and withdraw my horrible curse."

Partheus remained there, petrified. Oh great, he thought, the gorgon has left me here. Well, time to figure out what I can and cannot do, and see if I can get myself out of this mess. He tried moving every part of his body, one by one. To his dismay, every muscle in his body was frozen stiff. He couldn't even adjust his eyes to look around the room he was in. He could hear distant slithering sounds, and the occasional rock falling, but apart from the eerie wind, the ruins were unsurprisingly vacant of activity.

This sucks, he thought. Instead of dying from petrification, I'm going to die of boredom. He thought back to the brief time he spent with Twilight. She'd know how to get me out of this, he thought. She always has a plan for everything, and she probably knows an anti-petrification spell. But, she's miles away, safe and sound in Ponyville, unaware that her new best friend is currently a garden statue. He continued to stare unwillingly at the uninteresting ruins that lay before him, slowly losing his will to live.

Gravel came back with a dead wolf in her mouth. She set it down before Partheus."Do you want some foolish human?"Gravel asked him politley. Then she laughed a beautiful laugh."Ooops sorry I'll get you out.Silly me."She concentrated and then the stone broke off the human. Then he reached down for his knife......

Now free from his stone prison, Partheus grabbed his knife. But, instead of going for the gorgon, he leant down and cut himself a bit of wolf meat. Why would it do something that foolish, he thought. These gorgons are supposed to be smart creatures, and they wouldn't do something that reckless. I'll do what it wants me to do, I'm curious to see what it has in mind. He pulled out a piece of flint from his satchel, gathered some loose foliage from around him, sparked the flint, and made a makeshift fireplace. He skewered the wolf meat onto his knife and held it out over the fire, turning it over every few moments.

"So, I'm curious, gorgon. Why did you free me from my prison? I could have went for you just then, and you wouldn't have had time to react. Do you desire something from me?"

Gravel looked down in pure shame."I do want something from you.But it's not food or anything.I want a compainion. You do not know how lonley it gets out here. You are not a stupid pony you are a human."She said.Gravel resented the ponies she hated their princess there for she hated them.Gravel looked up at Partheus and smiled shyly. The human smiled too.Gravel laid down which was as close as she could get to sitting."What is your name foolish human?"She said then she sunk her fangs into the wolfs flesh.

Partheus was taken back by this development. All it wants is a friend, he thought. To be fair, it must be a truly lonely existence out here, and I can empathise; the brief time I spent as a statue felt like an eternity. "Well, I suppose that makes sense. And, my name is Partheus." He lifted the wolf meat from the fire and took a bite out of it, still on the knife. "Do you have a name?"

Gravel nodded happily."Nice to meet you Partheus! My name is Gravel.I think it's what you normal po-I mean people call irony?"She asked. Then she slithered a few inches forward."Do you like those.HISSSSSSS!!!!!!Ponies?"Gravel said with a resenting hiss.Gravel pushed what was left of the wolf toward her new friend.

"A pleasure to meet you, Gravel. I suppose it is somewhat ironic that a gorgon would be named after a type of stone, but then again, mabye that makes the name more fitting that way?" Partheus finished his morsel of wolf meat still on his knife, and carved himself another cut. "Sadly, I only know one pony very well, so I can't give you my opinion on all of them." He shanked the new cut onto his knife and held it over the fire. "But, if I was incredibly judgemental, I'd say that ponies are quite friendly, if a little too forgiving for their own good."

Gravel smiled. She has never really had a friend since she got cursed."I'm glad I have you here it's nice to talk to somebody. So do you have anywhere to stay."Gravel asked hoping Partheus would say no.She could make him a bed with the straw that she has in her ruins and she can always find stuff.

"I have nowhere to stay, unfortunately. I've been travelling all around Equestria for the past few weeks, you see, so I just set up camp for the night wherever I happen to be. Speaking of which..." Partheus looked up at the sky; the moon was out, a waning crescent in the spotted array of stars. "Huh, well, looks like I'll be staying here for the night. You don't mind, do you?"

Gravel now beamed showing off her fangs."No please! And don't worry about monsters or anything trying to get you I'll protect my only friend in this cruel world."She pointed to a corner where there was a pile off hay and when he sat up camp she slithered over and curled up right infront like a gaurd.

"Thanks. It's much appreciated." Partheus put down his satchel, and lay his head on the pile of hay, watching Gravel stand guard to protect him, and eventually drifting off into a peaceful sleep.

((Sure, I'll make it morning. And if you want to, I don't mind having this made private.))

Partheus was walking down a dark hallway, surrounded by shadowy figures looking down upon him behind their large hats. As he made his way down the hallway, the shadowy figures closed in on him, reducing Partheus to a crawl, then a slide between figures, then complete entrapment. He could barely breathe in the sea of black coats he found himself in. Just then, a pair of green eyes penetrated through the crowd, staring right into Partheus'. The green eyes moved closer, to reveal the face of Gravel, hissing her forked tongue into his face. Partheus gave out a terrified scream as she opened her mouth and consumed his head whole.

* * *

Partheus bolted up from his pile of hay, sweating and panting, feeling his face to make sure nothing actually happened to him. It was morning, and the ruins were somewhat alive with the distant sounds of birdsong. Gravel was still sat by his side, guarding him from would-be attackers. He lay back onto his pile of hay, sighing with relief.

Gravel heard Partheus scream she bolted up."Whats going on whats attacking you hold it down I'll freeze it!"She said looking back and forth. When she noticed nothing there was nothing there. She looked at Partheus."Are you okay? Then she noticed his cold sweat."Gravels face twisted into a very worried expression."Did you have a bad dream?I have alot of those. Was it about me?It probably was I knew this was too good to be true go on your way."She slithered over to the oppisite corner and started sobbing uncontrolobly.

She knows my nightmare was about her, he thought. To be fair, I'd be a little eager to jump to that conclusion if I was a greatly feared monster like a gorgon. But, I don't want to hurt her feelings like that, not after all that she's done for me. Partheus stood up, walked over to Gravel, and rested his hand upon her shoulder. "Hey, no need to cry! It wasn't about you, I promise! I have nightmares like that all the time. Why do you think I wasn't scared of you when I first saw you?" He bent down and met Gravel at eye level. "Besides, I'm not leaving until I've learnt all I can about this place. Do you think you could help me with that?" He smiled at Gravel, patting her shoulder reassuringly.

Gravel smiled sadly."I'm sorry I get too clingy and I'm just so lonley out here all alone."She said but the she "stood" up."But I will help my friend no matter what.If you want to go out of the ruins stay close to me it's dangerous out there and I don't want my friend getting hurt."Gravel told Partheus.

Partheus stood up besides Gravel "Hey, it's okay to get clingy. It shows that you genuinely care. Trust me, if I were in your shoes, I would treat every visitor like gold dust." He scanned his current location; no landmarks as such, but there was a faint path in the ground. "You know these parts much better than I do. Perhaps you should lead the way?"

((Aww, how she's holding his hand like that is really sweet!))

Partheus was slightly at a loss for words when Gravel held his hand. It reminded him of how Twilight used to hold his hand when she would spend ages dragging him around Ponyville, lecturing him about stuff he didn't understand or care about. All that mattered to him at the time was spending time with Twilight. Although she was a pony, she was the first person to ever make him feel part of something bigger. What he felt was an alien concept to him; he had spent his entire life isolated from everyone else. What Partheus felt, for the first time in his life, was friendship. And this feeling was now present in Gravel, as she escorted him to the start of Whitetail Woods.
