      To answer your rhetorical question, the American national temperament does not encourage good music in that style. On the whole, we tend towards the optimistic, which doesn't make for good metal. Scandinavia and Finland are more comfortable with the stark and the bleak, historically. Plus, they have Vikings for ancestors.
