A Flare for the Mythical [ATTN: Pyro]

Myth didn't take the train a lot. Really, she didn't like to travel at all. But Icy had insisted she take some vacation time, and she didn't want to spend it in Las Pegasus. Not that she had any problem with the crazy bustling city, but mostly she just didn't like that her grandmother's casinos were there. Besides, she still hadn't gotten a lot of chance to check out Ponyville. The one time she was there, it seemed pretty nice. She'd met a couple ponies here and there and they seemed friendly. Mostly Ponyville had a certain.... charm to it. Like most ponies who visit Ponyville, she was drawn in to its charm. But unlike most ponies, she was able to see where the charm came from. and not just in a figurative sense.

From just looking at her, one would likely assume she was blind. And they'd be partly right.

Myth's ability to see magic was her most unique trait, and often made for some.... interesting theories.

Some might call her eccentric. Crazy even. But she had a method to her madness.

In any case, Myth was pretty convinced that Ponyville was a magical center in Equestria. The Magic of Friendship seemed to emanate from there. and it made the town feel like home. Even tho she'd only really been there twice.

She hoped today, she might meet somepony new. If there was one thing in particular she loved about Ponyville, it was that every time she visited, there were new friends to make.

After doing some thinking, myth decided she'd check out the School of Friendship. She'd been there for a good 20 minutes, looking for the tour guide. She'd asked one point for help, but they'd told her to find the sign. She frowned. If she could see signs, she'd have found it by now. She sighed maybe she ought to give up on the idea of a tour of the school. She walked down one more hall, hoping to find somepony more helpful.

Solar Flare was humming a tune to herself in her office, playing with her bird and enjoying the various potted plants around the room. They were the only things she could see, but she had spent enough time in here to remember where things were and the best paths to navigate around them. After a bit more time, she started hearing somepony walking down the hall. They sounded like they were alone, and she decided to go see if they needed any help. Poking her head out of her door, she saw the shape of a unicorn approaching, though not one she recognized.

“Um… hello? Do you need anything from me?” She asked curiously, approaching the other mare while Sunny flew out and landed on Solar’s shoulder.

Myth turned and saw a shape poked out from a room. She could barely see the shapes, but she could tell what they were by what kinds of magic they were made of.

The unicorn had something about her that drew Myth in. She wasn't sure what it was, but she knew she wanted to find out.

She frowned "I've been looking for the tour of the school, but all I've gotten so far was 'find the sign'. Like...." she waved her hoof in front of her face "Hello. Yeah I can't exactly read signs." she rolled her eyes, putting her hoof back down.

She sighed "Sorry, just a little frustrating, you know?" She smiled slightly "I'm Mythic Vision." she extended a hoof "Who do I have the great pleasure of speaking to?" she asked incoming her head slightly.

Solar tilted her head at those words, thinking them over for a moment before she realized what they probably meant. She smiled slightly, meeting other blind ponies was kinda rare for her, so this was nice.

“I am Solar Flare, it is a pleasure to meet you.” She responded, shaking the offered hoof. “I can’t really help you read normal signs, but I’ll help you find the tour guide if you want.”

Myth smiled "I like the name!" she winked. She thought for a moment. She still didn't know a lot about this mare and something was drawing her in to her. Something about her magic made her.... interesting. She gave her best grump face and said "Honestly, after wandering the hall for 15 minutes, I'm kinda over the whole official tour thing." she looked Solar over "But I'd be happy to let you show me around, if you have a moment." she put on her best flirty voice.

Solar giggled slightly at the compliment, though she wasn’t sure how to respond to the rest of what Myth said. Somehow it felt like they were connected though, aside from both being blind, so she wouldn’t mind spending more time with her.

“Well, I’m not sure how good of a tour guide I would be… I can’t really point out much, and I don’t know how to navigate the whole building.” She said, shrugging a bit. “I can’t read sings either, at least not normal ones. Thankfully they’ve started adding ones that I can, but I don’t want to get lost in here.”

Myth cocked her head at Solar saying she couldn't read the signs either, she almost thought she had it figured out when Solar said there were less normal signs she could read. Myth stopped "What signs can you read?" she asked, her flirtatious voice gone replaced by confusion. Myth tried to think of some way a sign could be readable to a blind pony. All she could think of was in the letters were magic, but even then she wasn't sure how well that would work, even for somepony like her with magic sight. The more she thought about it, the more the idea frustrated her. It was kind of just something she'd always accepted as impossible. She sat down and massaged her temples, all this thinking was giving her a headache.

Solar frowned as her words seemed to just confuse the other mare. What was so confusing about Braille? Had she managed to go her whole life without learning about it? Unusual, she supposed, but not impossible.

“Have you ever heard of Braille? Bumpy signs or books?” She asked, trying to get Myth’s attention again. “Blind ponies often use it to read, since they can’t see the words, but they can feel the bumps. Certain patterns correspond to certain letters and such.”

Myth blinked. Patterns of bumps? The thought had never occurred to her before. "You..... you mean....." she sat in the hall, on the verge of tears already "H-how.... how long has this been a thing?" She asked looking at Solar, her eyes wet with her sudden realization. Frowned as she decided it must be a cruel joke. "You're pulling my horn, aren't you."  although it seemed to make sense. She added hopefully "R-really?"

“Well, I think it was before I was born, I don’t know exactly how long it’s been around. And I wouldn’t joke about making someone’s life better.” Solar said, kinda patting Myth on the shoulder as Sunny hopped up to rest on top of Solar’s head. “Would… I might be able to help you learn it, if you want.”

Myth hugged her and her tears began to flow, which only made her laugh she held her hug for a few moments before she spoke "I'm sorry. I'm...." she let go and wiped her eyes "n-not usually like this, I swear." she laughed some more. She took a deep breath. "Do you have any of this 'braille' you can show me?" She laughed a little more as she realized just how ridiculous it sounded that she met this unicorn like 10 seconds ago, and she's already crying on her shoulder. She scratched the back of her head "I guess i ruined the whole cool act, huh?" she blushed a little.

Solar was a bit surprised by the hug and Myth crying into her shoulder, but she returned the hug after a moment. She smiled a bit as Myth pulled back and started talking, and she giggled as Myth talked about ruining the cool act.

“Yeah, I guess. It’s ok though, we can still be friends.” She giggled again before continuing. “And of course, I would be happy to help you learn Braille. Let’s just go back into my office, I’ve got some books in there.” She said, turning to lead Myth back towards the nurse’s office.

Myth followed behind Solar as she led her to the office she'd seen her come out of "I can't believe.... all these years.... and there's been something like that...." she said, her face refusing to stop smiling and it showing in her voice as she spoke "How does it work? Are there like little things stuck to the paper in the shapes of letters? " She cocked her head as she thought that through "I guess that wouldn't work too well...." she thought aloud as she absently followed behind the mare. "Can you imagine? Books that actually tell you something?" then she started thinking about casting illusions on a book to make it actually talk. Now that would be something. She suppressed a giggle. Maybe she might try that joke on Icy some time.

“Mmm, kinda hard to explain it, since I can’t see it. All I know is it works, and it feels like they just made the paper bumpy, not like they put stuff on top of it.” Solar said, kinda trying to explain as she followed Sunny through the door and walked over to the books she had in the room. She hummed as she ran her hoof over the covers, eventually just picking one up and then realizing she didn’t have much in the way of things to sit on. Aside from the table, that wasn’t too comfortable, she only had one chair.

“Why don’t you take a seat right over here? I’ll help you find the seat.” She said, watching Sunny perch on something, probably the chair.

Myth smiled "Thanks, Solar, but I've got it." She nodded to the bird who'd landed on the back of a chair, as she approached the chair, then she turned just before sitting and said "Don't you need somewhere to sit? I can sit on the floor." she offered

Solar looked between Myth and Sunny in confusion, not understanding how she knew where the bird was. Did Myth have something similar to her own sight? She had never met anyone else that could do what she did.

“Did… did you see Sunny? How did you know he was there?” She asked, having completely missed what Myth said in her confusion.

Myth's smile vanished. Not because she was upset or anything but she was taken aback. Solar knew she saw the bird— who's name was apparently Sunny —she didn't mention anything else, but myth began to wonder what else she could see.  She sat blinking for a moment before she spoke "I-I.... yes, I see him.... do you see him?" Her heart pounded as she thought maybe she wasn't alone afterall. "D-do you.... do you see magic, too?" she asked. Her voice filled with hope and amazement. "I-I thought I was the only one!"

"I don't think so... It's more like seeing life, I guess." Solar said, still pretty amazed she just happened to run into another blind mare with special sight. "Like I can even see the grass, but once it's dead it's invisible to me." She fell silent after that, sitting on the floor as she started thinking about what this meant. She had assumed her ability was because of her unique talents, she had never been able to teach any other blind unicorns to see like she did, but maybe it was possible for some...

"That is part of the reason I have Sunny there, he helps me navigate around obstacles." She spoke up eventually. "He's also just a good bird, so that's nice too."

Myth's smile grew wider with each word Solar spoke. "Who would've guessed, I would learn there was a way I could read, and met somepony else with magic sight in the same day." she laughed a little "I guess I'll have to thank Icy for making me take a vacation when I get back." She smiled some more before she spoke again "Oh sorry, I guess I ought to explain. I was born completely blind. I couldn't see anything until I was.... I think I had to have been at least 8. That was when I began  to see shadows of things. Over time, my sight developed. It took me a while to realize it wasn't the same sight as other ponies. I can see the magic of the universe. Not just when unicorns cast spells, but I can see the magic the sun eminates, that relationships create, emotions affect, down to the magic that holds things together. And yes, even the magic of life." she smiled once more "The same magic you're seeing." she rubbed her cheeks and laughed "I haven't smiled this much since I got my cutie mark!"

Solar listened as Myth talked, pondering the implications of the other mare having what seemed to be a more general type of same ability she had. She wasn’t sure if her ability was more powerful in the area it was focused on or if it was limited because it was a weaker version. One implied she might be able to learn to see different types of magic. She supposed it didn’t matter too much though, she was fine with where it was at.

“That’s interesting. I was born blind as well, and it took me a while before I managed to see life magic. That is all I can see though, otherwise it is just darkness. It’s why I like to live in the woods, being surrounded by life means I can see very well, and I just like nature.” She smiled at the thought of her house for a moment before she kept talking. “Oh! But we’re getting distracted. Do you want to keep talking about this or get started with the Braille? You are the guest, and I don’t have any work to do until something happens.”

Myth smiled "Life magic is much more vibrant and colorful than most others." she laughed "I'm sorry. I do tend to get carried away talking about magic. Being a magic researcher, it's a passion of mine." she nodded slightly and smiled widely "But yeah. We definitely should get back to Braille." She bounced excitedly in place a little. "I'm so excited to see—" she giggled a little "feel what it's like to read with your hooves!"

“It’s understandable, today is an exciting day for both of us, but you especially.” She giggled slightly before turning her attention back to the book. She set it down in Myth’s reach, opening the book before starting to direct the mare’s hoof over the first few words and reading them aloud at the same time. She had read this book enough to remember the start well enough to recite it.

Myth blushed as Solar grabbed he hoof, but smiled wide as she anticipated what the words might feel like. She focused hard while her hoof was guided along the page. She'd never tried to examine texture, before. But she thought she might feel something. There was definitely some kind of line of the raised dots. She assumed the top line of dots was what Solar was reading. Once Solar had finished reading the part of the book, Myth's smile grew wider as she held back tears again. "This.... this is incredible. The dots.... they record that information? I have to learn how to read it." she wiped her eyes "C-can... can you teach me?" She grabbed Solar's hoof with hers and turned to make them face each other "Please?"

Solar was surprised as Myth grabbed her hoof and turned to face her, taking a moment before she spoke again.

“Of course, I’d be happy to help you learn to read Braille. Like I said, most of the time they don’t need me around the school, I just need to be here in case someone hurts themselves.” Solar shrugged, patting Myth’s shoulder a bit and smiling as she spoke again. “Maybe we could trade notes and you could expand what kinds of magic I can see.”

Myth smiled wide. The prospect of actually being able to teach magic sight to somepony was definitely something she'd always wished for. But... she frowned a little "I don't know if magic sight is something that can be taught, to be honest....." she admitted honestly "I mean, I just.... started seeing it, one day." she shrugged before she smiled again "But I'll be happy to teach you what I know, if you want to learn. I'm always more than willing to do what I can to expand others' understanding of magic. And who knows? Maybe you'll learn to see more along the way." she let go of Solar's hoof that only just realised she was still holding and blushed "I-I should probably ask my boss if it's okay to take more time off from work." she laughed nervously, scratching the back of her head "C-can you help me write a letter with braille?" she asked, smiling once again.
