Character Summary:

History – Muffin Top was born on a rock farm in the Foothills to a single mother. With the nearest village or town being miles away, they mostly only had each other and went about their lives unpreturbed, for the most part. Because it was only the two of them for the early years of Muffin Top's life, his mother had neglected to give him a name and only realized this oversight when she first took him with her on a trip to the closest village, where townsponies inquired as to what the colt's name was. Not being a mare to give much thought to such things, she named her son after what they had for dinner that night: muffin tops. In spite of these odd circumstances, however, Muffin Top was raised to be a kind-hearted and positive individual, always smiling greeting what few other ponies he met with open hooves. But these simple days of smiling and moving rocks around the farm did not last forever, as his mother eventually fell ill and died. On her deathbed, Muffin's mother had these words to say, "Don't make the same mistake I did, Muffin… Don't live a the lonely life that I did. I always used to tell myself that I didn't nopony else, I was fine on my own… But havin' you in my life proved me wrong. I want ya to leave the farm, go out and see Equestria, make friends, carve out a life for yerself, maybe even meet a nice mare to settle down with and have some foals. Just don't stay in this Celestia-forsaken land spendin' the rest of yer days mournin' me, there's a whole world out there waiting fer ya. Just promise me you'll remember to be kind and treat everypony like they were your own kin." His eyes full of tears, Muffin said that he promised and told her that he loved her. "I love ya too, Muffin," she replied "and whenever you're feelin' lonely just remember that I'll always be watchin' ya from the rocks, just like your grandma and grandpappy." Muffin Top's mother passed on shortly after these final words. After burying her on their farmland, using a pile of rocks as a grave marker, he spent a few days mourning her death before finally getting up the resolve he needed to move on. Gathering what few meager possessions he had and every last bit around the house that he could find, Muffin Top began making his way west, determined to fulfill his mother's last wish to find his place in this big and mysterious world.

Parents – Muffin Top was raised by his mother, a an older mare who mostly kept to herself. She was a rather cooky individual with a lot of strange superstitions and beliefs. The identity of Muffin Top's father is unknown, all that his mother can recall is that it involved a nearby harvest festival, a lot of hard cider, and a young stallion who smelled like cinnamon. This is also another one of his mother's more unusual traits: she is a complete scatterbrain. As mentioned above, Muffin Top had gone without a name for quite sometime, and when his mother finally realized this, she simply named him after their meal that night, muffin tops. This dish itself is another example of this mare's MANY oddities: She had an intense hatred for stumps on her farmland, they take up space and are a pain in the flank to remove. So, this hatred extended to muffin stumps as well, where she would bake muffins, cut the tops of the muffins from the stumps, serve the tops, then gather the stumps up in a bag and throw them into a nearby river. When she fell ill, there was not much that could be done for her. They made a trip to the nearest village to see the doctor, but the trip itself took its toll on her and the doctor was unable to do anything more for her. All he could do after this was take her home and make her as comfortable as possible as her end inevitably came.

Cutie Mark Story – During one of Muffin Top's occasional trips into town with his mother, he spotted some other colts playing together and went over hoping top lay with him. This particular group of colts, however, weren't exactly the nicest bunch in town, making fun of the socially-awkward colt and sending him crying back to his mother. As she consoled her foal, she told him that there would always be things in the world that will try to keep him down. The only thing that he can do when he faces such things is to keep on smiling. "A smile makes ya harder than any rock, Muffin!" At the time, Muffin Top had no idea what his mother meant when she said that, but he quickly forgot about it as he got home that night. The next morning, he wenta bout his daily routine of moving the rocks about the field, that particular morning being rather depressingly gloomy. This all changed, however, when he moved aside a fairly large rock and saw behind it, something he'd never seen before: A beautiful flower blooming out from a pile of rocks. Now on their rock farm, and the land around it, vegetation was very limited, and seeing any flowers blooming from the earth was a very rare sight, the only time Muffin Top had seen any flowers himself were the flowers in the gardens and shops in the nearby town. But to see a flower growing in this barren land from beneath a pile of rocks... that was truly unheard of. As Muffin Top marveled at this beautiful sight before him, he soon found himself understanding his mother's words from the previous day. This flower before him was such a small and frail thing, whatever seed it grew from could easily be starved in this soil or crushed beneath the many rocks lying around. Yet this flower did not whither away, it continued to grow and grow until it stood above the barren earth and the heavy rocks that tried to keep it down. From this Muffin realized that if he just stayed positive and smiled in the face of adversity as his mother said, then he would truly be able to overcome anything without fail, he would be able to rise above the worries and anxieties of his daily life, making his spirit, like this rose, harder than any rock in the earth. It was then that his cutie mark appeared, a flowing growing out of a pile of rocks. Upon seeing it, a bright smile came upon his face, one that seldomly left his face, one that he wore even as he left his home and old life behind.

Flaws – Because he lived most of his life with only his mother for company and very minimal contact with other ponies, Muffin Top is a rather awkward and aloof individual. One might even consider him a bit "spacey" at times, constantly smiling and sometimes seeming detached from everything around him. He is also extremely naive, and could easily be swindled out of every last bit that his mother left for him if he were to run into the wrong ponies.

Personality – As mentioned earlier, Muffin Top is a kind individual with a relatively positive outlook on life. He's very anxious to see the world and all it has to offer and make as many friends as he can, the only problem is that he has no idea where to even begin! He always greets every new pony he meets with a warm smile, wanting to make a good first impression, although sometimes said ponies are left scratching their heads at the stallion's occasional unusual behavior or words. But As one can imagine, he is quite the momma's boy and misses his mother intensely, often crying himself to sleep ever since her death. In spite of all of this, however, he always keeps his mothers words to him form when he was a colt in his heart, smiling and staying positive regardless of how bad things might look. He may seem like just an awkward and somewhat dimwitted stallion, but make no mistake: within this stallion beats the heart of a strong and unbreakable spirit.

I think Muffin Top's cutie mark should be something to do with happiness. Maybe a smiling sun? It would go with his coat colour too.

I actually did consider doing something like that, but then I realized that Celestia's cutie mark is a sun, so I think that's probably a symbol that is sacred in pony culture and is not to be used lightly. Another idea I am thinking of as I flesh out Muffin more is to make give him an unbreakable spirit beneath the simpleton earth pony exterior, one that is happy with who he is regardless of what anypony else tells him. I'm just not sure what I could use to symbolize that...
