Echo Scribe [Final]

Recommended Posts

[Ready to be critiqued, at least, though I don't dare call him perfect sans a second opinion.]

Roleplay Type: World of Equestria

Name: Echo Scribe, though he responds to both independently as well ("Echo" or "Scribe")

Sex: Male

Age: Stallion, though not by much.

Species: Pegasus

Eye Color: A deep, smouldering orange.

Coat Color: Pale tan

Mane/Tail/Markings Color & Style: No markings. Mane and tail are a light, dusty sort of brown, better-kept than most pegasi but still fairly unruly. Kept somewhat short.

Physique: Slim and wiry, although less athletic than most pegasi.

Cutie Mark: A pale swirl shape, representative of the wind, seeming to inscribe words onto a piece of parchment. Representative of his nature as an excellent auditory learner, and his passion for 'writing what he hears'--studying and teaching other ponies about things beyond the normal 'sphere' of Equestria.

Origin/Residence: Born in Cloudsdale, but has taken more permanent residence on the southern side of Hoofington, near the bay.

Occupation: Part time weatherpony. Also a student of languages and cultures.

Motivation: Echo understands the value of harmony and cooperation, and despite his somewhat acerbic personality he strives to keep different cultures--for example, the small but nevertheless present zebra population of Hoofington, and the hippocampi that show up in the nearby bay--cooperating.

Likes: (optional) Strong flavors to his food--sweet, spicy, sour, what have you. Something of a bookworm, he tends to spend time perusing books about language and dialect. Working outside. He is a decent swimmer, and spends a great deal of his free time at the bay.

Dislikes: (optional) Like all pegasi, Echo dislikes being forced into immobility and cannot stand close quarters for long periods of time. Because his talent involves listening, he dislikes being part of large, noisy crowds, and usually sits on the outside edges of rooms, near doors or windows--easy means of escape, should his claustrophobia become unbearable.

Dislikes being teased about his nearsightedness, and is very picky about others touching his spectacles or flying goggles.

Character Summary: Echo Scribe can best be described as animated--his special talent and his knack for study clash with his nature as a pegasus, and even while reading or discussing things, he tends to pace or vibrate his wings as a way to dissipate nervous energy. He tends to his duties as a part-time weatherpony with vigor, although weather management is not his talent; it is often the easiest way for him to vent.

The pent up energy leads to him appearing somewhat short-tempered and impatient, and this is not entirely inaccurate. He moves and talks quickly, and tends to get irritated when other ponies tell him to "slow down" or "take his time," things he sees as inefficient. He is very stubborn and is unafraid to butt heads, so to speak, with other such ponies. All the same, ponies that are able to put up with his quirks find a passionate pony underneath, and in his good moods he laughs quickly and loudly. He retains the pegasus knack for blunt honesty, however.

Echo was born nearsighted, which earned him no favors growing up in Cloudsdale. Vision problems are rare for pegasi--naturally, for a race that flies as far and as fast as they--and he earned something of a reputation as strange growing up. He puts the feelings to use in his multicultural studies; knowing what it feels like to be misjudged, he is very good at stepping into other ponies' hooves and helping them along. He wears glasses to correct his vision; while on weather duty they are replaced by prescription flight goggles--and he is very protective of both.

His cutie mark was earned the first time he went to Hoofington on a vacation in his youth. His parents spent the day at the beach, but rather than swimming right away, little Echo was fascinated by the other ponies around him--non-pegasi! What must it be like to live without wings, he wondered? One in particular caught his eye--not garbed in the traditional pastel colors of most ponies, but rather in stripes of black and white. Unabashedly, he wandered over to the zebra and asked him what he was.

Echo's mother panicked, afraid that the other equine would take offense, but the zebra laughed it off and began to explain, in his curious rhyming way, his nature. Echo found it fascinating, and began asking questions about what it was like to be a zebra--and how was his homeland different from Equestria--and why did he rhyme--and so on. Graciously, despite the colt's seemingly endless and rapid-fire questions, the zebra answered them all. As the sun set, the zebra excused himself, affectionately saying farewell in his native tongue. Echo returned it after him, calling across the beach, a wide smile on his face, and as he did, his cutie mark blazed into being upon his flank.

Talking to the mods, I have discovered that hippocamps do speak "standard Equestrian" by default, so based on this knowledge, the cutie mark story will have to be altered some. Perhaps instead he could have meant a zebra, or at the very least a pony from Germaney or Itality who have pronounced accents.
