Dragon Heart: The Rise of Chaos (One Slot Open!)

"In the past, there was war. In the present, there is peace. In the future, there is nothing..."

"So...you wish to hear a story, eh? One about fierce warriors, mighty magicians, and powerful dragons? Well then...I got quite the story for you! About three hundred years ago, Equestria was quite different...quite different indeed. As you may well know, the Princesses still ruled back then, but it was a strange time, a strange place...it was the time of the Bearers of Harmony, one of whom you had better well know, being Novices at our fine Academy and all! Anyway, I digress...it was during this time that tensions in Equestria had risen to new heights, where we were caught in a constant battle with all kinds of invading forces from lands far away, the most notorious being the wicked Changelings.

For several years, our ancestors were thrust into a costly war with the Dark Swarm, battling valiantly against the evil Chrysalis, and of course, we managed to defeat them in time...but not without a consequence. Little did we know that the Changeling Hives stood upon an ancient sealing ground, that was connected physically to Tartarus...and the destruction of the Hives opened a rift within the barrier. Five demons sprang forth from its depths, each former Alicorns that had been cast into Tartarus for nefarious deeds they committed in the ancient past...and were renamed by their new, dark traits. We know them as Death, War, Famine, Plague, and Armageddon.

When they emerged into Equestria...they took the will of the several Dragonflights, molding them into their personal army of darkness. The united scourge moved across the land...consuming everything that got in their way. However, there were still a few dragonflights who had avoided the mind-altering effects of the Alicorn demons...one of the dragons being our very own headmaster, Spike. With the help of the Academy's co-founder, Twilight Sparkle, the remaining dragons and ponies of Equestria formed a magical pact that still holds this day...the Scaleheart Pact. This magical bond united both ponies and dragons, magically and spiritually, and with their combined power...they pushed back the hordes of the Five Alicorns.

While not much is known on what exactly happened within the last few months of the war, the Headmaster tells us that the demons were defeated, and resealed back into Tartarus. Freed from their oppressive grip, the other dragonflights also took part in the Scaleheart Pact...and three hundred years later, here we are today, sending the greatest young warriors and magicians of both races here, to find their soul-partners and help defend our homeland. In time, younglings, you too shall take up your arms in the name of our Princesses and Broodmothers...but never shall we differ to either, for we act as the connection between both worlds, and thus must never take a side between them. Well, now! Story time is over...now get back to your studies, before I keel-haul your rears to the Mistress of Novices! SCAT!" - Master of the Library, Libros of the Red Roost.

Important Locations:

Canterlot - Capital of Equestria and home to the Scaleheart Academy, it is home to a congregation of all races. Ruled by Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, Canterlot is a shining pillar of strength and magical power. Ponies and dragons everywhere gather here to celebrate the Festival of Roaring Skies, a ceremony and competition in which the best young fighters and magicians of both races (usually the ages of a colt or filly, or dragon young wyrm) fight for the right to become a Novice at the Scaleheart Academy.

Scaleheart Academy - Home to the Scalehearts and the Eternity Scroll (A mysterious relic of ancient power, used to forge the Pact). Spike, Twilight Sparkle's own Scaleheart companion, now serves as the Headmaster of the Academy and Grand Master of the order. Every year, at the Festival of Roaring Skies, the Grand Master selects six worthy ponies or dragons to join the Scalehearts...however, the qualities that he looks for are unknown. The Academy lies at the top of the mountain's peak, and was made out of the very stone itself, magically enchanted to protect and preserve its secret knowledge and mystery. Those who become Scalehearts and Scaleheart Novices are sworn to keep these secrets at whatever cost, and so far...there have been no traitors. Split in several Halls, they are named for each distinct purpose:

The Scryer's Hall: Magical Observation of the Land.

The Warrior's Hall: Combat Training.

The Archmage's Hall: Magic Training.

The Archives Hall: Library.

The Teacher's Hall: Home of teachers and elder members of the Scalehearts.

The Apprentice's Hall: Home of Novices and younger members of the Scalehearts.

The Sanctuary: Where the Eternity Scroll and the Grand Master reside.

The Dome of Fortune: Where all ceremonies take place.

The Demon's Pit - Said to be the hole where the Alicorn demons came out from, this cursed area is considered tainted and has often been known to drive any inhabitants insane if they dwell there for too long. Once the home of the Changeling Hives, it is now a dark crater, with the local wildlife dead or non-existant. The Scalehearts always keep an eye on this unholy place, to make sure that 'myths' stay where they belong...

(Any other cities in mainstream Equestria exist, and can serve as places of origin. Dragon origins can be made up...if they make sense.)

Name: Reina Gladhoof

Gender: Female

*Race: Pony (Earth)

**Age: Filly, soon to be Mare

Appearance: Lemon Yellow with a green yellow mane and tail that have golden streaks in them. Light orange eyes. Usually seen smiling, with her hair in a bob. Has a warhammer on her back at most times, though has never seen taking it out unless either physically confronted or asked to look at it.

Personality: Quiet and reserved. Not quick to make judgments. Doesn't jump to conclusions, and goes through a thorough process before taking action. She never lets drawbacks get the best of her, and she never admits loss. She views defeat and loss as two different things. Highly optimistic.

Motivation: To show the world that every drawback comes with benefits. And to prove that everywhere you go, there is good. A very big optimist.

Skills: When given a task, she does not dive straight in. She takes a minute or more and then starts. This actually helps her get done faster, since she has a knack for problem solving. Despite her later start on things, she is done before most others.

Cutie Mark (If a pony): A purple scroll, which she got when she noticed a detail in a spell that an elder member of the Scalehearts was wrong and could've killed him. Ever since her attention to detail has been noted by many others.

Background Story: Reina, unlike most other foals, was not born crying. When she came out, her parents were surprised to find her laughing her head off, as if happy to be alive. She had seen the scalehearts and how serrious they all were, and decided to join them because being so serrious just wasn't healthy for all she knew. She started training with her special warhammer that could, upon impact, identify the weakest spot in an oponent's armor. She learned how to step back from a situation from her trainer and mentor, whom she calls her "Seirka" and got the hammer from. She carries her hammer on her back at most times, because of the significance of it to her. She says not even the best of ponies are perfect or flawless, and hopes to start a group in the scalehearts where students can openly tell of their weaknesses and work on them.

I said I'd make an expy of a WoW dragon and I meant it:

Name: Pupil

Gender: Female

*Race: Dragon (Forest Dragon / Green Roost)

**Age: Adolescent

Appearance: She is varying shades of green in colour, her scales a vibrant emerald green and underbelly a lighter lime green. Her eyes are the most notable feature of her, they cannot be closed as she has no eyelids. And they are milky, dead, though shades of colour occasionally shine through them at random. As a female dragon she is slender and lean, her limbs slightly longer, her muzzle not as sharp as her male counterparts. Her fringes are purple in shade, and very soft and curved in shape.

Personality: Pupil is very peaceful, nonaggressive in nature. In fact, she is almost stoic in her demeanor, not often showing emotion and speaking very matter of factly. Her words are often laced with metaphors, allusions, and other poetic devices, as if she is speaking a poem when she speaks. Getting to know her in general is difficult due to her natural distance from others, and when one does know her it's clear that she at least partially exists in her own world, her imagination for her being more vivid than her reality.

Motivation: Pupil is driven by the need to learn what her imagination and dreams are trying to tell her, and she often focuses on this aspect of herself more than any other. She is so lost in her own thoughts she will occasionally go days without food or drink and nearly starve to death.

Skills: Pupil's imagination, beyond overwhelming her sense of reality, is the realm of her magic. She receives prophetic but nearly incomprehensible visions through her mental realm, and a lot of her time is devoted to trying and usually failing to puzzle some meaning out of her highly abstract visions. She is also learning, slowly, an inherent ability to read the minds of others through her own mental realm, though it is currently an incredibly primitive skill.

Background Story: Pupil grew up as the daughter of a single Scaleheart dragon who was lost in a mysterious accident that was never satisfactorily resolved. His death affected her, while she was a normal child growing up, she began to suffer from insomnia and nightmares after his death. Her powers seemed to develop from this, perhaps somehow inheriting some aspect of her own father's power. She was mostly alone growing up, lost often in her waking dreams that confused her child's mind, unable to make friends, with nopony and no dragon able to really connect with her. Thus everyone who nominally knew her in her hometown of Trottingham was surprised when she attended the Festival of Roaring Skies.

She was discounted from the beginning, nobody expected her to achieve anything. However her imagination proved a powerful ally, and she found unique solutions to almost every presented challenge that impressed the judges of the affair. In the end she was accepted as a novice Scaleheart, following in her father's footsteps. She has to this day given no comment on why she joined.

Dang lol, Conward stole the blind char spot. Well, I cooked this up instead. Bonus muffins to anypony who can figure out who I based him off.

Name: Lightning Shadowgarb

Gender: Male

*Race: Pony (unicorn)

**Age: Colt, soon to be a stallion

Appearance: He is a dark grey colour, with spiked white hair. Always wears a navy blue headband which covers left eye.

Personality: Lightning is quite a relaxed, level headed colt, never acting out of line. He tries his best to calm his friends down in most situations, and has very good skills as a negotiator. If it does come to blows though, Lightning can turn into a cold and calculating fighter, using his opponents weaknesses against them in any way. He also has a very special left eye, which he keeps covered most of the time. But when he needs it, he wil lift his headband and use his Sharingan, a magical disability which colour-blinds the eye, but alows the pony to predict the moves his of her oponent will next throw at him.

Motivation: Lightning doesn't really have a motivation, but he does want to get into the academy and become a scaleheart, a fantasy of his since he was very young.

Skills: He is very good at hoof to hoof combat, a surprising quality from a unicorn, and copying the moves of others. He will use his magic to help him though, but normally only for mundane tasks, but will normally use it a lot when he doesn't want to be seen. As well, as normal fighting, Lightning is very good at stealth attacks, hence his name. Also a very good negotiator.

Cutie Mark: His cutie mark is a black circle with a red line through it, signifying his sharingan.

Background Story: Lightning was born into a very poor family, barely managing to survive off of the scraps they could eat. Soon enough, Lightning became of age to start his thieving career. He was very good at his art, managing to dissapear into the shadows nearly every time he was caught, which was rare at the least. But as he got older, more advanced heists came his way. Unfortunately, he got himself involved with the wrong ponies. He was hired to steal something from a big corporate pony, which he succeeded in doing, but came home to find his parents dead, and his home razed to the ground. From then on he vowed to never steal again. Until the recent festival of roaring skies, he was living in an orphanage. He impressed the judges with his abilities, especially his Sharingan, and even managed to sort out a heated argument between a stallion and a dragon before it turned ugly. Lightning now awaits to see if he got in.

Alright...two things: The concept of a blind pony would make sense, but unless they are pegasi, they normally fly on their dragon-partner's backs. (Although pegasi still ride on their dragon's backs, only because it is faster). As for a blind dragon, that IS possible...but you'd have to be specific on how they are able to fly, and how it'd make sense. Now, don't get me wrong...I love the idea of a blind pony riding a dragon, but...even with Glassy's amazing hearing, flight combat relies heavily on sight. I'm sorry to be a bit of a downer for ya, Conward...

Next, while a peaceful nature is perfectly fine...your character is expected to fight and, if needed, kill in order to preserve the peace. Consider the Scalehearts as a national special forces. Few are brought in, and fewer become Scalehearts. The reason for this is that each candidate must be able to master these five principals:

1. Physical Combat (There are some exceptions)

2. Magical Combat (There are some exceptions)

3. Ancient Knowledge (Lore, basically)

4. Understanding of Politics (Dragon/Pony intricacies...)

5. Complete Bond with Your Partner (If you can't feel the other's heart...well, you're SOL.)

Secret #6. A Pure Heart. (Should explain itself.)

Anyway, I'll be making my OC soon.

We'll be starting with all the OC's meeting up in the Court of Bladed Wings, located at the edge of Canterlot. They will be taken up to Academy by it's Weaponmaster, Lord Redstone. (Another added piece of information: All ponies/dragons who become Scalehearts receive noble titles and influence, and are always treated with near-royal respect. Due to their nature as peacekeepers and intermediaries for both ponies and dragons, they never take orders from others outside their Order, even the Princesses or the Broodmothers. If they want something done...they ask, simple as that.)

Name: Stygian "The Heartless" Radiance

Gender: Male

Race: Pony (Unicorn)

Age: Colt (almost a Stallion)

Appearance: Onyx black, sleek coat and well-muscled frame, with his dark blue, cut short mane and Sparkle family's iconic highlights. Has dark indigo-purple eyes and wears a ruby pendant around his neck. Often wears a gray noble's suit in public, if only to hide his toned body and be underestimated, and also has two red dragonscale earrings.

Personality: Calm, courageous...and cold. He shows very little emotion in front of others, and has earned himself the nickname "The Heartless" for his lack of compassion and restraint toward his other classmates. While he does not display outright hate or anger, many consider his actions to be made out of such feelings. In the past, he had been quite the opposite, but the disappearance of his parents had drained the emotional life out of the colt.

Motivation: To become strong, for the sake of strength. Stygian cares little for the fate of others or the affairs of the world...but will step in if required. Some would consider his lack of concern to be an excellent advantage toward the politics that surround the Scalehearts, but many agree that his coldness prevents him from being capable of making decisions based on the heart.

Skills: He possesses magical strength similar to that of Twilight Sparkle, his ancestor, and superb ability in bladed weaponry. His magic is mostly centered around the enchantment and transformation of his weapons, as well as the manipulation of light around his body to essentially camouflage him.

Cutie Mark: A dragon's fang with a white star behind it, which he earned upon beating (and embarrassing) a group of Novices who had often subjected him to cruel jokes and practices. Its symbolization is unknown at its given time, but the star is guessed to indicate his origins.

Background Story: Born on the evening of a lunar eclipse, his birth was supposed to be a celestial blessing and a sign of good fortune. However, his entire life has been one tragedy or beating after another...starting with the disappearance and unconfirmed deaths of both his Scaleheart parents when he was a small foal. Due to the Academy's origins, the Headmaster believed himself obligated to take the foal in and care for him. Throughout his life, he had been referred to as the "Dragon Orphan"...and often considered pathetic by the older Novices at the Academy. Despite the love and care the elder members of the Scalehearts gave to Stygian, the cruel words and actions towards him by the Novices and younger Scalehearts had molded him into a withdrawn, emotionless individual. It wasn't until a few years ago that he had finally put a stop to the torturing of his seniors...by hunting them down and beating each of them to within an inch of their lives. To this day, none of his victims had spoken of his vengeance...too afraid of the heartlessness he presented toward them. However, the teachers of the Academy know well enough who did those "punishments". During this year's Festival of Roaring Skies, he had watched the proceedings alongside his foster father Spike...the first time he had been outside of the Academy since he had arrived there. He had certainly attracted the notice of many a pony and dragon, a mystery to anyone outside of the Scaleheart Order. Now, he waits patiently for the arrival of his new "classmates", for this year was his first as an official Novice.

Name: Ultvara

Gender: Male

Race: Dragon (Green Hellkite)

Age: Adolescent

Appearance:

HeroesV_Sylvan_07_Green_Dragon.jpg

The almost exactly how i imagine him. He is a black dragon, but that's more of arbitrary classification. As a hellkite he is a little large.

Personality: Contrary to his appearance, he never seem to take anything seriously and is almost always found lounging somewhere. While not mean or aggressive, he does have a tendency to take challenges personally and become highly invested in any venture of self improvement. He is outspoken, but never over assertive and his mind is always working on some way to get stronger.

Motivation: To expand his skills and grow stronger and more knowledgeable.

Skills: He is an engine of death and pestilence, what he can do wouldn't be considered child friendly. As a green hellkite he is skilled in the black magic of pestilence; poison, disease, corrosion, it's all his to control. He's also quite the scrapper.

Background Story: As a whelp Ultvara heard the stories of powerful dragons and demons that fought over the fate of Equestria. He longed to be like those beings, powerful and known.Though he was the smallest of his brothers and sisters, he had the largest heart. While the adults were away Diamond Dog scale hunters came to try and poach the young of his brood. Ultvara was the one who fought back and defeated many of the hunters. While the dogs retreated the young dragon basked in the praise he was receiving and stopped paying attention to what was going on. A single arrow flew straight and true through the air and pierced his brother's heart. They didn't even attempt to retrieve the body. Ultvara's brother was killed out of spite. Right then he knew it was time for him to leave, that his dreams of grandeur and heroism, without direction and purpose, would only get dragons killed, so he left and went to the only place he figured he belonged. Canterlot, The Festival of Roaring skies awaited him.

The Festival presented him with many fine challenges. Many of which he failed due to a fear of harming someone, the judges gave him one final chance, but his jovial attitude during the fight and foolish shenanigans got him disqualified even though he won. When asked if he took this seriously, he simply shrugged, and told the judges that there was really no way for him to compete without seriously injuring some one. The judges decided to test him in an isolated area, somewhere he could cut loose. To say he impressed them would be an understatement, he solved the challenges with both power and intelligence. After all was said and done, Ultvara was accepted as a novice Scaleheart.
