Character history

Sterling was never one for good fortune, ironically. He never did see himself as too big or important in the grand scheme of things when he was younger. His way of seeing things was instead to 'take every day as it comes', a philosophy that was given to him mostly by his mother and father. Born and raised in Ponyville, as a colt he didn't display many extraordinary qualities, which as the years went by he started to see more and more as a problem. He saw that his friends kept acquiring cutie marks, and him, nothing. It was a worry that tugged at the young pony's mind for a while...until one day.

One day, Sterling attended a parade that was going through Ponyville. The colt wasn't particularly fussed at first but then, he saw what could only be described as the 'Royal' section of the parade. The young boy's eyes were drawn to this display like flies to a zapper. He marveled at the sight of royal guards and the associated decor, he couldn't explain why but everything about that display seemed just right. And then something happened within this pony's mind, something that he had never seen before; he had developed an aspiration.

From that day onwards, Sterling made it his life's mission to become like the armor coated stallions he had saw on that day. Given he had no real talents so to speak of and a somewhat sub-par of magical abilities, he trained, hard. Despite his age the colt was determined to be just as he saw these idols of his. He trained his magical abilities until they were considered above average and made a conscious effort to help those he saw who were in need. However due to this overzealous attitude Sterling sometimes saw himself getting the short end of the stick on most occasions, something that bothered him for a time. He eventually got over this feeling, believing himself that all the hardships on his part was worth it.

Cutie Mark Story

However, Ponyville wasn't exactly the most dangerous of places, so those 'ponies in need' were few and far between, if even there at all. This led Sterling to sometimes be at a loss of how he could help others, and he never really got a chance, well, until one day. One day as the young colt did his daily 'patrols' he noticed something across a small field. What looked like to him as a group of ponies about his size. He inquired further and headed over, to find a group of older colts intimidating and seemingly bullying a younger colt. Sterling stepped in and tried to do something about it, putting on an impressive but altogether harmless light show with his horn in hopes of scaring these bullies away. And with luck, the plan had worked, and Sterling was left with a new and thankful friend. Said friend then told him something, something that resonated through his mind like a pinball, "You were at the right place at the right time, thank you.".

Upon hearing those words, the colt's mind flickered back and forth between past events and he realized something. All the times he had helped out somepony else, or was given an opportunity to help, and even being at that parade to trigger his first real aspiration; all of these events suggested that he did indeed have a talent...for being at the right places at the right time! Upon said realization, the pony felt an odd tingling sensation behind him. He turned eagerly and noticed on his flank, the mark of a silver coin with the shape of a horseshoe printed onto it. Ecstatic, the young colt raced home and was presented with congratulations from his parents, and a wise crack from his father, saying the coin was a sign of good luck. And that remark has stuck with Sterling to this day.

After the Cutie Mark

Years passed and eventually Sterling's parents saw that his attitude hadn't changed. They were proud of the aspirations their son had finally set himself and worked towards and decided to help in what way they could. They knew of Sterling's want to join the ranks of the Royal Guards, and subsequently the REA and when he was of age they sent him away to Canterlot in the hopes that he would fulfill his dream.

Upon reaching the glorious capital the now fully grown unicorn enlisted to join the REA in hopes of being stationed as a Royal Guard in Canterlot. He knows that he may be needed elsewhere and he is fully accepting of taking on whatever task is set before him, REA related or not.

Character Summary

Sterling has grown over the years to be a determined and committed young stallion to whatever he sets his mind to. Despite this though he knows how to enjoy himself. He may let work and training get in the way sometimes but he always endeavors to make time for his friends and can be sociable when the need arises, and is usually a friendly individual.

However due to his helpful nature, Sterling sometimes finds himself either ignorant or downright clueless of a situation that won't work out in his favour. This can lead to him turning out worse for wear when situations have ended, however he doesn't let things keep him down for too long and almost always picks himself back up.

He is a very social pony, despite his dedication to his training and or studies. He can carry a conversation and is all around a rather friendly individual, content with seeing others around him as pleased as he usually is. In terms of friendship, he is always open to new ponies in his life and welcomes them with the utmost care and courtesy; being in the most regal city in Equestria he keeps manners at the top of his priorities. He is steadfast and loyal, always looking out for his friends even when sometimes it means neglecting his training, and won't just walk on by if a pony needs assistance.

Finally, Sterling can sometimes be too absorbed in bettering himself. People can sometimes see him as smug even though he doesn't mean to be, in fact he strives very much to be the opposite. He also can let aspirations cloud his perception of reality, leading to decisions that others would find unreasonable, or just plain stupid. He isn't the most intelligent or strongest of ponies but he works almost everyday to improve himself, in the hopes he can improve the lives of those around him, he doesn't fully grasp that things sometimes don't work out that way however.

Hmm... If your OC was enrolled at a military academy, that usually means that he wants to be an Officer/Specialist. So that could be an option for your OC.

(BTW, I'm still waiting on that fee for your name. It's gaining interest :/)

He more so wants to be a royal guard more than anything, but if the opportunity presented itself he could apply for higher positions.

And I edited and gave you credit for the name of this guy, thanks again :)

Make him a Specialist, Specialists are awesome.

For now I'd much rather stick with the whole royal guard thing for him, sorry, just how I want to play with this character :)

Somewhere down the road I may consider his career going down a different path but right now, I'd much rather have him train to be a royal guard and get opportunities for other careers later :D

Hey Conor, I'm going over your app, and need to suggest some changes.

Firstly, as far as Mane RP goes, the Royal Guard is just a part of the Royal Equestrian Army (REA). Any pony wanting to be a Royal Guard would first need to be enlisted in the REA first, then be stationed in the guard. Also, currently there isn't an "Academy" for the the REA, just an Enlistment process. If you want to re-write the character to be an REA trainee in Canterlot, we can work forward from there.

Ah right, thanks for the suggestions there Corsair. I didn't really grasp how the whole REA thing worked so thank you :)

I've rewritten the app to make him a trainee of the REA like you suggested, hope we can work forward now :D

Actually, officers in practically any military force, (Lieutenants, Captains, Majors, ect) has to go through an academy to serve. Due to training of more tactical strengths. So an academy for a military force, might not be too far of a stretch.

Doesn't matter. Not in approved lore nor even played-in board canon, so it can't be used even if it makes sense when it involves ze REA. For future reference, please do not contradict an RPH. Thank you.

It was his call all along, I just wanted to let him know that it could have been a possibility.

Sorry for any confusion, folks. :sniff:

Well, I've made the necessary changes and I think this app's kept to the rules in terms of REA and other such things.

Despite the whole academy mix up thing, is this app okay or do I still need to change some things?

Sorry if it seems like I'm just bumping here but I was just wondering where this app is going :)

Thanks :D

Having read through Sterling's background, it never really explains what his cutie mark is for, or how he got it. I think you were trying to say that his talent was for being in the right place at the right time to help ponies, but there's no real explanation. We'll need you to add in a Cutie Mark Story into his background. Maybe a time where he stumbled into a situation where he was able to help another foal, or something similar.

Good idea, thank you.

The app's been edited again, let me know if there's anything else that needs changing :D
