Had they the chance, who's to say that wouldn't have been enough?I felt like the finale was more saying friendship may be magic but love is pretty special too. Even the lessons or how the story arrived at them can sometimes make no sense to me, or lack satisfaction because they never fulfilled my natural expectation.A good example would be Rarity's lack of comeuppance in Sweet and Elite for lying to her friends pretty much the whole episode, or how RD's friends decided to treat her in MMDW.
