Mane/Tail Color & Style: Auburn (#A52A2A). Mane is kept cropped short, but tail is allowed to grow longer. Grows a "soul patch."

Eye Color: Hazel/Green

Cutie Mark: Angstrom symbol, representing his knack for minutiae and his general love of physical science.

Physique: Average for a unicorn stallion of his age. No huge muscles, but still fairly trim. Has a penchant for flat caps, tweed jackets, and solid-colored neckties.

Distinguishing Marks: Three small earrings in his left ear made of metal recovered from a meteorite.

Origin: Born and raised in Manehattan. Undergraduate in physics from Stalliongrad University. PhD from Canterlot U where he now teaches.

Occupation: Professor of aetheric science at Canterlot University.

Motivation: To show Equestria that magic... is science!

Likes: Physics, mathematics, aetherodynamics, theorycraft, homebrewing, tea, coffee, inquisitive minds, pipes and pints, clever solutions to vexing problems, good wine

Dislikes: Badly written term papers, obnoxious ponies, apathetic students, barroom swill, energy drinks, technical difficulties, grading menial coursework, willful ignorance

Character History

Angstrom was a precocious colt, eternally curious, and forever attentive to the smallest things. His parents, a small-time business owner and a school teacher in Manehattan, encouraged him to excel in all he did, though they could seldom keep up with his inquisitive mind and capacity for acquiring knowledge. In school he was the king of the science fair with his profound, yet elegant project to measure and quantify the strength of everyday aetheric interactions. It was his attention to detail and his desire to be able to quantify the unquantifiable that earned him his cutie mark.

Angstrom breezed his way through primary and secondary school, eventually being accepted to the prestigious University of Stalliongrad. There, he studied physics, graduating with top marks and further expanding upon his work in secondary school. During his undergraduate experience, Angstrom fought hard with lack of grant money and the ill-understood mechanics of his research. Few ponies had ever stopped to consider how magic worked; only whether or not it worked at all.

Despite the setbacks and stone walls, Stalliongrad took Angstrom’s naturally inquisitive mind and honed it to a fine point, suitable for pedagogy and higher level research. After graduating from Stalliongrad University, he took his work to Canterlot University, a veritable Mecca of arcane research and education at the time. After earning his PhD in aetheric science, Angstrom was hired on as a professor. He continues his research at Canterlot U.

During his doctorate program, Angstrom courted and married Dawn Chorus, who also teaches at Canterlot University.

Character Personality

Professor Angstrom is perhaps known just as much for his incisive wit as his theories of Equestrian magic. Angstrom is at his best when he has somepony to spar with, figuratively of course. The good professor prefers his classes be an exchange of ideas rather than standing in front of the class blowing hot air, as he would say. Angstrom conducts class informally when possible. He can often be seen chatting up his graduate students and research assistants in a local pub or coffee shop, being a firm believer that empowered, comfortable students and staff are productive students and staff. This laid-back teaching style and propensity for discussion also extends to his personal life. It is not uncommon to find Angstrom and his wife teasing each other with science nerd jokes on their way to university from their Canterlot flat.

Angstrom is highly intelligent, but also down to earth, seeing his abilities more as a gift than an entitlement. Angstrom is not a belligerent pony and will not go out of his way to pick fights, though he still believes that there is a special rung in Tartarus for ponies who groom themselves to be dumb and entitled. As such, though he lives in Canterlot, he generally avoids the areas where high-society types are expected to gather.

Angstrom is very detail-oriented. He has a knack for picking up on small things and classifying them appropriately. For the most part, he is very meticulous and methodical, though this can also be a liability, as he often finds himself micromanaging projects, funding, and time that he’d originally intended to delegate to somepony else. If there’s anything that he’s learned in the rigors of research, it’s the value of pacing, something he is still working on.

Skill Set

Research methodology. Years of experience conducting research have ingrained scientific standards for research design firmly in Angstrom's mind.

Statistics. Though it was merely his graduate minor at Canterlot U, Angstrom heavily emphasizes the importance of backing hypotheses with statistics and context.

Wine tasting. Though a newly-acquired skill for Angstrom, the professor extends his categorization skills from aetherics to wines.

Spellbook

Cantrips. Basic light, mage hand, and other sundry minor spells.

Arcane sensor. A spell developed over years of practice and trial and error, the sensor spell allows Angstrom to measure and assign hard numbers to magical phenomena that he can perceive.
