Musical ponies!

Play a musical instrument? Post it here! (As far as I know there is no thread like this here yet...)

Give as much detail as you want!

I play drums (Specialize in swing jazz) and (Self taught) rock, boogie woogie, and blues piano (as many people here know already). I tried to learn saxaphone, but failed less than a year into it.

So, what do you all play?

I love music. I really don't know what I'd do without it. And I play several things, some better than others, lol.

I'm the best at Bass Guitar, which I've played for a little more than two years now. My friends say I'm pretty good, but I've still need to learn some other techniques, such as slapping. The reason I say I'm the best at it is because I'm really connected to it. I've reached a point, where I don't need the music or tabs in front of me. I can play with feeling and the sound comes out well, not only other music, but jamming as well.

Next would be singing. I think I've got pretty good pitch and range, but I'm still lacking a little bit in intonation and finding what really suits me. I can imitate just about anyone, but I'll have to try a few times to find a range for something original.

I did play drums for a while, where I mostly learned latin stuff, mainly ska and latin rock. Drums were so energetic, they pumped me up so much! That's why I really want to learn other styles and have more parts to work with. I guess I need to start with getting a set first, lol.

Keyboard/piano is what I'm also trying to master. This will definitely by a challenge since everything just seems so precise. I'm almost to the point where I can sight read, but nowhere near where I want to be, which is improvisation. But the reason I'm learning it, is because it's a classic instrument, which means that there are a lot of good songs on it, and it goes with pretty much anything.

When I was into orchestra, I learned to play Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, and Alto Saxophone. I have not really practised these much over the past few years, but it's all still there. It comes down to my music preferences, really.

Apart from Clarinet, I've taught myself how to play everything. Lessons are expensive! lol

I really want to learn violin though. It's also a classic instrument, but more than that, it would really fit a lot of the emotions that I'm always trying to convey.

Moved to Music Showcase, where I'm sure you can find lots of other ponies with a love for music :)

Ah, thanks! I wasn't sure where to post this!

Wow, that is a handful! It took me a while to learn how to do some good improvisations on keyboard and piano... but it's really fun when you get to that stage.

Classical music here.

Professionally trained for about 13 years. Decided not to pursue a music career and stopped practicing for about 4 years unfortunately =( I one day started to miss my music and I'm currently trying to regain my former technique.

Here's a quick sample :)

Saxophone

Play nearly every saxophone from soprano to baritone but sadly have never played a tenor. Strange when you think about it, I mainly specialise in Jazz or classical can do some rock but I always try to swing it. Guess I'm a jazz man at heart and always will be. I love listening to Big Band music

Playing bass and acoustic guitar over here. I used to play trumpet once upon a time, but I'm more of a rocker than a jazzman these days.

...now I wanna post a Soundcloud of me playing something on bass XD

My younger brother is a swing-jazz bass player. Of course he can play rock aswell.

Edit: Oh, he used to play Cornet (I believe it is spelled like this) aswell. He dropped it, and now loves the bass.

My older brother is a classical/jazz clarinetist.

Big band music is great! Real good stuff.

I play the bass, mainly blues, funk, rock and I'm now trying to figure out jazz. I've had some courses but never liked any of them so I pretty much learn everything by just playing and improvising. Plus I am basically married to my Fender Bass. Sometimes we don't understand each other and I can't play and she doesn't sound good, sometimes the sound is just perfect and the bass is really trying and I fail, sometimes I'm in the mood but the bass just doesn't sound right and sometimes everything is perfect and the music is bucking magic. (This kinda sounds weird but it's the truth^^)

I take some pride in the fact that I have made the bass respectable in the eyes of many people I knew by introducing them to slap bass and showing that playing the bass doesn't necessarily mean playing the same 2 notes over and over again. I even had random students I didn't know approache me in bars and telling me how awesome I was^^ That were the days... I moved away now and haven't had as much success^^

So now I also play guitar... a bit... just for fun

Well, were should I get started? I think I'll just start with the first instrument I learned playing.

When I was five years old, I started learning to play the violin. After four years, my violin teacher moved away, so I "only" played the violin in the school orchestras and later in the university's one. Though it's the first instrument I learned, I don't think it's the one I can play best.

With eight years I started playing the piano, three years I added the organ to my list. I'm still getting lessons for both instruments, and I think I can play them quite well. (Not perfect yet, but I'm still young enough to learn.)

Three years ago I got an accordion as a birthday gift from my parents. I didn't play it very often, so... I know what button I have to push to get the chord I want, that's all.

Last March I bought an ukulele and started learning the chords. I haven't taken any lessons, but it's not too hard to learn anyway.

One month later I started learning to play the guitar; once more I mainly learned chords. (It's a lot harder than ukulele^^)

Other instruments I have played melodies on are recorder and ocarina.

Another musician here. I guess "keyboardist" describes the most closely what I am. But let me explain a bit further.

I've been making music for 28 years now. I started a few weeks before my eighth birthday. Back then, arranger keyboards hadn't surpassed electronic organs yet as far as features went, but where I learned to play, I guess old school entertainment organ playing with bass pedal was considered outdated already, so I learned to play the arranger keyboard on an electronic organ.

I was a lot into the development of technology in that field. After a few months already, I was sick and tired of imitating acoustic instruments, pianos in particular, with simple subtractive analogue circuitry when the era of samples was dawning. Also, as soon as I had something to tinker, I tinkered. When there was something programmable on an organ or a keyboard, I programmed it. With the evolution of top-of-the-line arranger keyboards, this eventually led to completely custom-made, sequencer-backed arrangements programmed on the device itself with no computer help whatsoever. This was in the first half of the 1990s.

In combination with my musical preferences, this eventually led me onto the inevitable path away from arranger keyboards with auto-accompaniment and built-in speakers to the more serious stuff. Synthesisers. In the late 90s, I acquired my first workstation which served as my sole instrument until 2003 when I decided to expand because certain pieces of music put too much strain on it for both the envelope generators and the sequencer to cope with, and because I considered virtual-analogue synths to be the better choice for the music I played (classical European, non-German electronic music). I continued to use hardware instruments only, and I still do today. Instead of putting tracks together in a computer, I love to play them live on real, physical instruments which also means I don't record or produce anything.

About five years ago, I joined a band. They play something different again (100% cover; R&B, soul, funk, disco, mostly from the 80s), and my method (remodeling the original as faithfully as possible instead of KISS and using as few sounds, all presets, as possible) doesn't quite fit in there, but it's fun.

Playing in a band gave me the justification (the necessity, actually) to put together a second setup. Altogether, my gear consists of four workstations, two of which are also samplers, one sampler, five VA synths and some more outboard stuff and other electronic instruments.

However, recording something is difficult at best. My laptop, my only computer which can get even close to my instruments, isn't quite reliable currently. I do have a decent audio interface, but it's a USB 1.1 interface with only two audio channels which means I'd have to record each stereo signal pair one by one, even monitoring through the laptop's own headphones socket if I want to go 24 bit. And to be honest, it wouldn't be worth the effort, at least not for the brony community. I'm not into any kind of music that's currently interesting (pretty much anything ranging from the mid-90s to now), and vice versa, I like the music your parents listened to. If I were to record anything pony-related, it'd sound old right away.

Everypony plays a guitar or a piano. Sadfaec.

I'm a cellist. I often play with a trio, a quartet, or an orchestra. I'm artistic, and I like to think of new

ideas. I'm hoping that when I have the money and authority to do so, I can purchase some equipment

that can allow me to reproduce these ideas on paper. Or monitor. Most of the time, I like to play the

more catchy and bouncy solos released for the cello, as most of them can be boring or monotone to

my ears, and only sound good with accompaniment.

I played very little piano and recorder as a child, and my singing voice is rudimentary. If I ever learn

a second instrument, I hope that I will either remaster the piano, or try the guitar.

Alto saxophone, though I hope that I'll have an opportunity to at least try the other types - especially soprano...

Well, I have been learning for 8 years now. At first I was only interested in jazz, but now I seem to really appreciate classical music too which isn't often associated with this instrument - I like that kind of nobleness in its sound.

Now, despite my continuous problems with basics (like still working on quality of sound and training my mouth muscles), I'm really happy that music has become a part of my life. I play as much as I can and still gain more experience. Recently I started to play in a band. Our music is a mix of reagge, rock & ska. This is really great, you know.

I also try to learn the piano but this comes much harder as I 've just started and I think it would be great to play the guitar - but this is only a plan yet.

Wow, a lot of pianists. Never woulda guessed.

Anyway, my first instrument was the trumpet, back in 5th grade, and I took piano lessons out of school, but those didn't last. The trumpet didn't last either, as around 8th grade, one of the directors at my school said something along the lines of "You suck on trumpet, here's a trombone, a positioning chart, and a room to practice in. Have fun!" And, long story short, I'm the only Senior trombonist in the school.

As for style? I tried joining the jazz band after school, but that was more irritating than fun, so while I can kinda play some jazz, I mostly play classic. And I don't know if it's a style, but I really enjoy playing in the marching band, mostly because the 'bones are the loudest section. Out of 300+ members, a group of 20 are the loudest.

I haaaaaaaaaave: a voice, a tenor saxophone, 2 electric guitars, an electric bass, a trapset, a harmonica, a keyboard, a piano, and an ocarina. As for the ones I can actually use aside from really basic stuff? My voice and the drums. Like a few others here I mimic in my spare time, and almost everypony I meet comments on my voice control! Drums is obvious, the most basic requirement is banging on things rhythmically, and classes taught me how to focus that energy! :D

Oh, forgot I've also acquired DJ programs and equipment including turntables, now I just have to learn not to scratch at the speed of light.
