What a worthy audience for her greatness! As you all know without doubt, I am the Great and Powerful Trixie! Trixie was given the stunning privilege of hosting this week's SoP Session because the weird green rat-bunny thing and the crazy pink pony are a bit...preoccupied at the moment. Trixie accepts gifts and standing ovations at any time, though she is afraid autographs will have to wait until after Session III!This week you can all show Trixie what you've got with your story skills. Since she can't expect all of you to write a story as good as she can, she has provided you with a story template. All you have to do is choose new words from her word list, unspoiler the story after you have done this, then fill in the blanks. Before you foals can say abracadabra, you'll make epic story magic! It may be that all the other ponies are enraptured with her skill at being "better" at any skill than a specialist pony, even though most of what she does is simply embarrassing any challenger in the theme of the challenge (rather than actually outperforming the challenger.) I find it a great reflection of life in the actual theater, where it's not one's technical know-how of stagecraft that gets one cast in a show, but the ability to make it seem like you're better than the other auditionees. Trixie holds a special place in my heart as the talented performer who eventually gets handed an actual challenge that cannot be solved by the putting down of another.DragonshyCowardice and squeaksMay be what makes Fluttershy,But she's still hardcore.Not one of my favorite episodes, simply for the fact that NONE of the mane 6 seem to neither notice nor care that Fluttershy is obviously upset about going to confront a dragon. Of the mane 6, AJ seems to be the most in touch when one of her friends is acting strange, but she does nothing to try and console Fluttershy, even when she has to carry her up a mountain on her back. Then, when Fluttershy explains that she's dracophobic, everypony seems surprised. Of course she pony-ups to the dragon and asserts herself well at the end, but it was a very weak payoff to a bit that ran too long.Look Before You SleepAJ- Big PictureRarity- The small detailsBoth have the answerSince the first episode, I had wondered how in Equestria the practical, utilitarian Applejack would be friends with the flourished, aggrandizing Rarity. I was happy to see that, in a lot of respects, they don't get along, but both care about Twilight's feelings enough to be cordial (if a little snippy) to each other to make the sleepover work. This isn't an episode I'd hunt down to watch, but if (for example) my niece wants to see it, I'll happily watch it her.Pony Mad-LibTwilight Sparkle: Princess Celestia has given us this mission, and we must not fail. I wonder if we've seen them all yet? Presumably she's learned more over the series, like Rarity's gem finding trick.Twilight was actually my favourite pony, up until I first saw this episode. I remember that this was the first time special talents for each pony was mentioned, and Twilight's being magic seemed... cheating, somehow. I also (and this will sound really silly to most of you) found myself feeling jealous of her. Yes, I was jealous of a fictional character for being good at a skill that doesn't exist, and thus I cannot possibly possess. I don't know exactly why, but I guess it's because, in my mind, my "ponysona" was a talented unicorn, and Twilight being better at magic than all other unicorns... just rubbed me up the wrong way. As I said, silly....first time I noticed this but... in that scene, Twilight's mouth actually opens farther than her jaw. Animation error, or cartoon artistic licence?Snips eyes are weird. Look at them. He's the only pony I can think of with solid, coloured lines all around his eyes, instead of just black lines around the top. Well, I guess Truffle Shuffle too. Makes him look... fatter, I guess? Also, Snips teeth are outlined with the same colour as his coat. Weird. Also also, neither Snips nor Snails have irises.Spike clearly knew Snips and Snails before this. I wonder if they are friends?Trixie's voice is kinda grating, but I do like the way she rrrrrrolls her Rs.Spike was all about praising Twilight's magic earlier, but why did he suddenly worry about saying it in front of Rarity? It's not like Rarity would mind if Twilight has more magic. Also, did he say "Must dash!" or "Moustache!"?Rarity.......is a classy lady.Random background pony at about 3:50. Yellow coat, orange mane/tail. Does she look smaller than the other ponies to anyone else?Rainbow Dash kinda... sits in the air in front of Trixie when challenging her. It's kinda weird.Trixie's neon light show... she's holding a magic wand, like her cutie mark. Never noticed before. I wonder if wands are actually magical in Equestria, or if they're just for show....As annoying as Trixie's voice is... Snips and Snails are worse.Look at Twilight's face when she uses the zipper spell on Spike. That's definitely a "I'll fix you good!" kinda face.In the crowd scene, just after AJ's humiliation is this pony:I can't ever remember seeing her before. Acording to the wiki her name is Airheart, though her design is different to the one pictured. Plus, in the next shot of this scene, she's replaced with a white coat, blue mane pegasus (lighting bolt) in the exact same position.Rainbow Dash's trick is actually pretty cool. Not quite as impressive as the Rainboom, but making a rainbow like that is pretty awesome, you gotta admit.When Rarity transforms her mane using magc, her horn vanishes! That's an impressive trick! Also I just noticed, Rarity and Trixie have three rings on their horns, Twilight only has two. I wonder if that's an indicator of ego Not much else to say, except that when Trixie runs away at the end of the episode, her ego still seems to be fully intact, nor does she seem to care about her trailer. Maybe she has an actual house somewhere? She could probably put another trailer together with magic anyway. She IS great and powerful, after all Good episode over all. Noticed lots of little things that I saw never saw before, which was nice.Will watch the other episodes (and do the mad libs thing) some other time. And I think twilight's horn only has two rings because her mane is usually covering a portion of her horn, whereas rarity and the G and PT have their mane styled in a fashion that doesnt cover the forehead.Also, I like Trixies voice.One day Trixie will learn her lesson, and come live in ponyville and be twilights student mentor. People might have made a big deal out of season 2 episodes that had a lot of world building in them, but it seems to me like they came out swinging in season 1.One of the things I always liked about this episode is the way the conflict in the episode got started. Up until this point, Applejack has been a rather critical pony, even of her friends. Maybe that comes with the territory of being the element of honesty, but along with Spike's dislike of girly things, Rainbow Dash's laziness and Rarity's fussiness, she's not afraid to speak her mind. So when the conversation about Trixie's boasting starts, it isn't even directed at her, its just some side conversation in the crowd. I think that is why it works so well, they weren't trying to even pick on Trixie, she just overheard their conversation and decided to teach them a lesson.Rarity speaking in the 3rd person. I think its also telling that while Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Rarity all did stunts that built up their own abilities, Trixie's responses didn't build up her own ability, rather she tore down the other's.Twilight might have been wrong about not wanting to stand up for herself and her friends, but she was right about not going out of her way to respond to a troll. Unless you've got reason other than your own ego, its really better to just ignore them.Door in the middle of nowhere is one of the best gags in the whole series. Also, the storyboard artists in this show are always thinking inside the chimney. That little scene where Spike is walking along, kicking the rock, and all you see is his bottom half... I don't know if it was a reference to something else, but it was a really clever way to help establish the low down mood.Trixie might have been a horrible show off, but I think it is to her credit that when she was pressed, she actually did try to stand up to the ursa. She's certainly not a horrible pony by any stretch of the imagination.Oh my... the part where Twilight soothes the ursa with the music of a gentle breeze through reeds was just amazing. (I've got a to go with it if you're interested)I like the double moral in this episode, even after the part about showing off which was good in its own right, we get the bit about Spike just needing to be himself. Most excellent if you ask me. Also: I love the pacing in these earlier episodes, its so laid back. They're not afraid to take their time, cut the scene and come back a day later and run another establishing shot if they need to.Mad Libs? That doesn't make any sense!I think perhaps the double entendre between must dash and mustache was intentional? Spike isn't exactly the most suave baby dragon around, he probably thought he should have been complimenting Rarity since he was in her presence.I bet that Magic wands are a real thing in Equestria. I mean, you've got other enchanted items here and there, so why not? Earth Ponies can build flying devices, so why not magic devices?I bet that Trixie has a great and powerful bank account somewhere and so she isn't worried about her trailer being wrecked. (also, snips and snails were tasked with cleaning up the mess, so they probably mailed her whatever was salvageable.)And last but not least, since it came up earlier in this thread.
