I was told today that I am wasting my talents on the pony fandom and that I should go get legit published instead. I am not sure whether this is an insult or the greatest compliment that can be paid to a writer in a fandom.

I'd say that it's a compliment that your talents are seen as good enough to be published and an insult as well as clearly they are seeing your participation in the fandom as a "waste of time." So oddly it's both. But who says that a talent could only be used for professional things and not for fun as well?

It is both and both are true. From a fiction standpoint, your talents are utterly wasted on a fandom that doesn't appreciate them.
