Your Character's development (present and/or future)

Recommended Posts

Hello all! It's been awhile since I posted a spam stable topic. this time I figured it be fun to discuss or characters development. What I mean by that is , well in many of your apps I'm sure you've all elaborated on your OC or cast characters dreams and hopes. In a way you could think of this as a "where do you see your pony in a few years or when they grow up?" question. to make this easier I will give you two examples.

Presteza, my traveling painter currently has the dream of being Equestria's greatest painter and one day opening up her own gallery in canterlot where she will display not only her own work but the work of painters all across equestria. I personally would think she achieves this dream and though her travels she overcomes her magical handicap with the help of friends and lessons she has learned on the rode. She will likely also learn how to properly make a sunhat and while she'lll keep her paintbrush motif manestyle she'll likely change it to show both her eyes and make it a ponytail and if things go well with the stallion (or mare) she grows to love she will either have or adopt some foals and start a family.

My changeling, Aria will probably not be able to recruit all changelings to her way of thinking and life but hopefully she would at least gain a few followers of her ideals. Since it is unlikely she would be able to change every changeling in her race she will likely gravitate towards her old dream of being a famous singer and be met with a fair bit of success.

I've actually thought this through for Ghost Writer before.

Right now she's a published novelist and playwright, and she runs the Traveling Players, her acting troupe. She avoids interacting with the audience, but she still makes good friends with every member of her troupe. Or tries to. She doesn't really go out, and as such usually spends her free time with a book. Eventually she will grow a little out of this shell, probably with the help of somepony close to her, and when the troupe finally parts ways, she'll settle down in some quiet little town with that somepony and probably run a theater troupe.

I think much of my characters' development thus far as been "in the present" during the course of RP writing. When I first wrote some of these characters, I was new to RP and this site was very new overall, thus both my and the site's standards for character applications were pretty low, and thus my character apps would be seen as short and skimpy on development these days. Because of this though, there has been significant character growth and backstory revelation that came through during the RPs.

Carrot Fields: He has actually met his initial "dream", which simply was to start his own homestead/farm as a young stallion. He has his own (still rather small) farm on the outskirts of Ponyville. In the course of the RPs, it was revealed he served in the REA as soon as reached stallionhood instead of any sort of college/university route for the sole purpose of using it to earn money to start his own farm. He only served a couple years and described it as "standing around guarding outposts in the north and watching a lot of snow fall", as nothing really exciting ever happened at any of the posts he was at. His extended family helped build his house and barn when he purchased the land, but otherwise lives alone, save for his younger sister who was sent to live with him for a few years as an informal apprenticeship in farming. For the future he would like to see his homestead develop from a starter to a successful business selling all sorts of carrot products. He also would like to pursue his love of astronomy in a more professional and public way. Past that, he really just wants a family of his own.

Martini Paradise: For the future I would stay there are three big important stories to tell: Assuring her daughter finally gets the proper education she deserves (as they were pretty itinerant, Sunrise Beach's education lags well behind most ponies her age); finding a permanent well paying job in the career she loves (bartending), and finally resolving one way or the other the torrid on again, off again love affair with Brazil Nut.

Sunrise Beach: She is basically going through puberty and all that entails. He dreams really is to be allowed to stay in Ponyville where she was sent for schooling by her mother (Martini Paradise) as she has developed some real close friendships for the first time in her life (having to always move before, she could never do this previously). Of course she'd like to learn to read and write well (having quite the hard time at present with both), and to become ultimately, a "sports star", but for now, just to be the star of the local junior hoofball team she is on.

Pathfinder: Pathfinder is a hard case because she has already really accomplished what she wanted, which is to be an adventurer. Adventure itself is what she wants to do and she does it regardless of the obstacles. Meeting Snowfall has given her a small list of subset goals- marry her, have a family on the side of her adventures, train them to carry on the amazing adventure legacy- as well as maybe find out what happened to her parents. But honestly? She's already found what she wanted.

Jackpot: Just wants to run a great casino that everypony will love. Wouldn't mind a kiss or six from Trixie.

Valen: Just get through life, honestly, because it has a way of messing up his own plans. Doesn't really know who he is yet or what he wants to do.

Another hard thread to post in. Here it goes...

Sky Flare - Wants to be recognized for his stunt talents, either as a Wonderbolt or some other flight team. Was on one until it folded, and now he seeks to try again.

Sweet Surprise - Wants to continue what she's doing now with making candy but wants to maybe get out there and showcase her talents more. Slowly she is trying to do this right now.

Guiding Light - Oh boy, has this one gone through the development cycle! He started out as a love sick colt, then a kind of a bumbling pony, and now frankly I'm not sure what he is. I would like to make him appear more mature as he develops his magic and learns how to help others and to basically retcon the mistakes I've made with him in the past role playing with him.

Apple Cinnamon- Her dreams are already met playing her fiddle but beyond what else I can do to develop her I'm not sure.

Lore Weaver- His dreams of having a bookstore are made and now he seeks to teach others about magic, sharing his knowledge.

Fire Heart- Fire has grown considerably from an unsure pony with control issues with her magic to a confident pony. She wants to learn how to use her powers to help others and learn what she wants to do in her life as a career. It's a bit of soul searching she's trying now.

Riptide- He's kind of set on selling surf equipment and his passion of surfing, but I guess for him is making hew friends.

Watermelon Gush- Just started with this pony, but Watermelon is quite content being a happy filly. She isn't really focused on her future yet and just wants to make friends and have fun!

Diamond Cut - Wants to be a famous jewelry designer in the Crystal Empire if not beyond. Currently he's trying to get his name out there.

Snow Dancer- Snow Dancer is trying to learn how to fly without crashing much and will eventually want to work in the Weather Factory making snow.

My list:

  • Dr. Spin Tale - Wants to become a history professor one day, but otherwise contents himself to be curator of a smallish niche military museum.
  • Falco Kestrelson - Being able to venture off into every dangerous locale one day, just to say that he has survived those locations.
  • Moondancer - Hopes to find a use for her magic skills that don't require her to run off into the wild for a living. She's considering multiple options, including becoming a magic instructor.
  • Dr. Merlot - Desires bragging rights to win the heart of a mare who's both incredibly famous and one possessing high class.
  • Col. Pummel - Wants to leave a stronger Royal Equestrian Army behind than the one he entered.
  • Flakey Shards - Too immature to have goals in life yet other than scamming ponies.
  • Snively - Making sure he stays high in his Queen's favor until the end of his hopefully comfortable days. Maybe he can further solidify his status in the Hive by getting that alluring lounge singer Luxuria to be his romantic partner someday, but that's only a minor goal in the grand scheme of things.
  • Prof. Morianna Razorclaw - Wishes to extend Aquellia's influence to all corners of the globe, especially within Equestria. Strives to secretly turn Equestria into a state that models itself more strongly on Aquellia.

Hm, now that is an interesting question. I actually think it may deserve a place on a non-spam board, but anyway...

Earth Writer- You know, I actually had an arc all planned out when I wrote his app (my first on this site!) He was going to try to establish his reputation to the point of winning a seat on the Royal Geographic Society (and how they let me make up a whole organization like that I don't know.) Of course, once I actually put him in some threads, his story had many interesting turns thrown into it, the first of which was that he became a journalist, and the second that he gained a special somepony, Sugar Apple.

At this point, I'm actually planning on transitioning him into a full journalist, instead of a geographer just doing journalism on the side; there's not many reporter ponies here, and I think that would be a good niche in life for him. As for his own ambitions, just being able to travel and see the world, hopefully with his special somepony, and maybe family later, would be enough for him.

Flying Brick- I really don't know with this one; I actually wrote her app around being a sort of free-runner and acrobat, without actually referring to the words free-running or parkour, since I didn't know if I was actually allowed to do that. There's not much money in that, though, so she's pretty much been drifting, looking for some kind of place in Equestria. I don't know quite yet where that search will take her.

Wordsworth Psmith- He doesn't really have any particular ambitions at this point; he just takes life as it comes, since he's aristocratic enough to afford that luxury. He likes seeing things go well and end happily, and will probably just go through life taking the first opportunity to interfere for the greater good. No telling what trouble that might get him into, but that's half the fun of it, right?

Might Batsman- He's a simple soul; he just wants to be the best Cricket Batpony in the world, and he's on track to do it.

Sky Sailing- He's just starting out on a music career, but as long as he can buy groceries and do nothing but write and play his songs, he'll be happy.

Norton Breakbeak I- Oh, this one's fun! His eventual (probably impossible) goal is to be the acknowledged Emperor of the Griffons, but in the meantime, he's working on turning Breakbeak City from a dirty industrial pile into one of the Great Cities, by sheer force of personality if nothing else. I actually wrote this guy as a kind of experiment, to see if I could make a character that could actually shape the setting around him as he develops as well. Still starting out, but we'll see how it goes!

Prince Blueblood- I actually think it is a good idea to have a development plan for cast characters, especially if they're not prominently featured in the show. It makes them more fun to play.

With our Prince, I started with the intention of trying to explore just what could make a guy so impossibly rude to a lady, and knocking about my head was the idea that he did it on purpose, because he'd long ago lost the ability to tell a good mare from a bad. Building on this idea, I wrote him as shaped, and spoiled, by his upbringing and surroundings; ending up as immature and cynical, but not irredeemable. I also wanted to explain his cutie mark, so I made him an avid mariner (which explains his conspicuous absence in later Canterlot episodes)

I have to say, these latest threads are actually coming together pretty well for him. After the Gala, and Applejack's kissing booth, he's a little more open to mixing with the commoners, which leads to Nightmare Night. In turn, his sufferings lead him to actually question his adequacy as a Prince, which leads him to Boot camp.

Not quite sure where to take it from here, but I'm excited to find out where he goes. I would like to expand more on his love of ocean travel in the near future.

It's a very interesting question and I have a lot of characters to go through. I'll have to try and not spend too much time on each:

Pegasi:

Radiant Steel: My first OC and one who has received quite a bit of development, especially recently. I see her growth continuing. Through time, I see her coming out of her shell a little more, becoming more comfortable with who she is and attaining more true confidence. Her ultimate goal has always been to have a good REA career; already she's gone up a couple ranks. I don't know if she'll become an officer like her father or brother, but she'll probably make a good sergeant or sergeant major. Perhaps she'll also find some romance with a stallion who understands her.

Hopesong: When she grows up, I think Hopesong will be a fairly well adjusted mare. Perhaps she'll become a singer. I imagine her deciding to travel a lot.

Snowfall: Snowfall is happy with Pathfinder, and I'm sure as things progress that will only intensify. She's currently in the boot camp thread so that in the near future she'll be able to go on adventures with Pathfinder. Elsewhere, she still has some hang ups in regards to her company. I imagine her at some point she'll travel into the badlands on her father's trail, if only for closure. She'll maybe consider stepping back from things at point but will ultimately stick with it all.

Damask Luster: I really have no idea. I didn't really have a plan in apping him and haven't used him very much at all. I suppose he'll continue with his pursuits as a singer/poet and probably find success there.

Serendipity: I don't see Seren being capable of much greater change. She's happy with who she is and where she is. She'll stay being the lovable oddball tease she is. As for whether she'll become the owner of the High Stakes, probably not for a while. I don't see her getting her act together right away.

Crystal Snowflake: I see her working with her associate Dr. Merlot a lot in the near future, financing an increasing number of expeditions to acquire precious jewels and relics for her collections. Things will continue to be awkward for her, and she'll become increasingly unsure of herself. In time, she'll maybe start to slowly accept her daughter's decisions, even Pathfinder, though there will undoubtedly be some frustration along the way.

Earth Ponies:

Lady Luck: I don't really know. it's been far too long since I've used her, which is a shame. It's hard to get a feel as to where she'll go as a result. She's fairly comfortable with herself though, so I guess she likely won't change too much.

Midnight Brand: Perhaps in time she'll become more open with others. In time, she'll probably find the reassurance she needs to rejoin society at large and move back into the city. I don't know if she'll be in a hurry to stick in one place though.

Ardent Fate: It's hard to say what Fate will be like when she grows up. Perhaps she'll actually eventually start to succeed, though maybe not exactly as she expects. I don't know if she'll ever become an actual knight. Perhaps, being well traveled since her youth, with her unwavering spirit and reckless abandon she'll become a capable adventurer somewhere down the line. Maybe instead she'll have some sense knocked into her and set the sword down to become something entirely different. It's hard to say.

Starless Shroud: The pirate gig should be profitable for a while. it's hard to say what else the future holds. She'll undoubtedly start to open up with the crew and maybe become more than the just the calculatedly distant faceless crew member she strives to be there. She could stand to actually make some friends and perhaps there she will.

Harlequin Salad: Eventually, maybe, Harlequin will realize she can do okay for herself as a food stylist for magazines given the food she makes always looks amazing regardless of how awful it is. I don't see this happening for a very long time however. She will in the meantime continue to make others ill and make herself the fool.

Slick Noir: I don't see Slick stopping. Not even prison bars can hold a master thief of his skill. He'll just probably go bigger and bigger until he finds a real match. Maybe eventually he'll find it in him to reconnect with Starless. Hard to say.

Unicorns:

Spirit Flame: Spirit has a lot of developing to do. She's at such a disadvantage, still being new to society. I think, little by little she'll start to become a more natural acting mare. Spellbound might help. I can see her in time putting her gifts at magic and Gray's teaching to use, as well as the tenacity she learned in the forest. She might make an exceptional adventure.

Dazzle Dawn: Dazzle's future is kind of hard to sort out. She's not really good at very much, so it's hard to say what she'll be. Maybe she'll just work a normal job, maybe work in one of her favored coffee shops. In time, I'd like to see her and Arcana come back together and resume their friendship.

Arcana: She'll likely continue down her current path for a while. Perhaps she'll succumb to greater darkness for a while in her pursuits and try something reckless. Eventually, I'd like to in time see her come back around, open up some more and reconnect with Dazzle.

Steel Dagger: What I'd like to eventually see happen is Dagger finding a mare who's a match for him. Someone who can keep up with him always and keep him in line. His playcolt lifestyle needs to be made more difficult for him.

Gray Lexis: Gray will continue with most of his current pursuits. Mentoring Spirit will prove fulfilling and fruitful. Through Spellbound and the magic camp he'll perhaps find a platform for his wisdom. He'll probably continue to travel as well. In time, he'll start to feel more confidence in the direction Equestria is headed and start to feel as if he has done well with his life.

Crystal Ponies:

Alexandrite Tilt: I doubt too much will change for Alexa. She'll probably open up when it comes to outsiders some. Maybe she'll eventually find a muse to drive her on. Otherwise she'll continue on as a guard in the Crystal Empire and pursue her jousting career.

Tourmaline Glass: it's an interesting question with Tourmaline as she has a lot of growing to do. Ultimately, she'll probably turn her passion for reading into a passion for writing; I can see her becoming a successful novelist once she takes a few steps down and realizes she doesn't need to take it all so seriously. Maybe eventually she'll become a pony who isn't afraid to smile eventually.

Others:

Verity Essence: Verity has it together really well. Not really sure where she'd go, except in subtle ways. I'd like to have her go to Unyasi someday. I think having her get in touch with her roots could be important for her.

Sierra: With Sierra, I think it's just a question of continuing to figure out who she is and finding confidence in that. I can see a few more trips to Dragons Peak and the badlands as well as other continuing adventures. Other that, not really sure.

Vivid Flair: Vivid is going to continue both at NSI and as the Noble Flare. It'll probably stay something of a balancing act, with the superheroics ultimately probably winning more of her time as they become more refined. Perhaps she'll in time also let others close. hard to say.

Insara: Considering I've never played the character, I really have no idea. I think she'd mostly be fairly content where she is. She'd make plenty of time to bond with Verity and otherwise just keep on going.

Brenda Razorclaw: Her paranoia and drive to add to her collection I think will only increase. She'll only become more ambitious and cutthroat, I think. Perhaps it'll be her undoing. Maybe perhaps instead she'll find someone to help her soften her guard a little. That doesn't seem very easy, however.

Luxuria: Maybe she'll eventually become a little more well adjusted. She could stand to loosen up, become less self-centered and more content with her place in the hive. I think she'll continue to sing however, and continue to have an interest in learning what she can about Equestria.

I love questions like this! If anything, writing down some character goals really helps with organizing thoughts on how to play them and push them through roleplay events.

I really only have one character with very broad goals, but that leaves some room for exploration, I suppose.

Keyframe

Keyframe is a traveling vaudeville performer and artist, so most of his life goals are centered on his act. He enjoys traveling around Equestria, performing for small crowds of ponies interested in his moving pictures. Mostly, he wants to bring some form of joy to the world. I feel like he tends to be unfocused and flighty with his goals. He's dedicated to his craft, but has a hard time committing to the seriousness of his own career, or the direction his life is leaning. I think that, in the future, he'll really start to uncover what it is he's searching for in the world. Maybe he'll gain some type of great experience that will shape him into understanding what is important to him about what he does, and why it is that he's doing it in the first place? I'd like to see him form some strong friendships with other ponies. Right now, he really doesn't no anyone outside of his immediate family, so I suppose that contributes to his aimlessness.

I think the most fun thing to explore is going to be his shifting culture. He's a small town farm pony from the desert! Seeing the world is a real shift in atmosphere, and I imagine it's going to influence his beliefs, dreams, and cultural identity on a significant scale. Especially because he moved from that small town to Manehatten, where his act is less than impressive.

well this is a bit of a doozy

Lord Skarr

originally Lord Skarr was supposed to be a one shot rp villain. in his first incarnation he was working the pony devil bit that had borken horns as a crown where he was the ultimate evil sealed away by his children in a music box. then he became an evil spirit bound to armor that feed off of darkness that would be weakened by obsidian. then he became kinda like ermac and was many ghosts in armor. then he was the last nightmare pony and could feed on magic, then he is in he current incarnation The mad king of nightmares.

NECROMANCY!

Last time I was here, I basically talked about my character's in-universe goals. Now to reveal some of my actual development plans!

Spin Tale: My original plan was to put him in an adventure thread as a fish-out-of-water character. I found such a thread... but it died, and by then, I got interested in other characters more. Spin Tale these days is mostly just a legacy character that barely gets used anymore.

Ingrid Marie: I wanted her at first to be a distant part of the Apple family who gradually learned how to bond with the rest of her extended family. "Apple Bloom's Big Day" basically served that purpose; these days, I keep her on hand as a magic mentor in case other users need one.

Sugar Apple: She was supposed to be the pony that I'd be free to use in any slice-of-life and competitive RP no matter the location. After 2012's Running of the Leaves ended, her main storyline revolves around how her relationship with Earth Writer develops. Otherwise, I never got invested in her as I did with later characters.

Falco Kestrelson: My original dedicated-adventurer OC. Like many of my early OCs, I lost interest in using him, especially since the two adventures he was in died. Not much things happen in the location he's in, so he doesn't get much mileage.

Moondancer: I don't have any clear arc for her, but I sure love using Moony. Her biggest development so far has been taking Pocket Change to be her boyfriend, and I hope I can figure out other ways to make her grow. Too bad she's one of my better-adjusted characters, which means she has little-to-none flaws she needs to overcome (kinda like AJ, really).

Babs Seed: If the show promises to never use her again, I'd love to give her a cutie mark in gardening. Aside from that, I need to use her more in action-packed Manehattan threads.

Filthy Rich: Needs to spend more time with his daughter. Anyway, I found him one of my harder-to-use cast characters. I never got around to making a replacement open thread with his store after the previous one properly wrapped up. However, I do one day plan for him to get better acquainted with the Canterlot/Manehattan/Stalliongrad upper class while remaining true to himself and all that jazz.

Merlot: He was conceived as an antagonist for adventures. That..... hasn't come to pass at all, but he's a snob and a jerk, and I love RPing as him.

Pummel: Also born the same way as Merlot. Mainly a situational character for Royal Guard stuff. He does his RP role rather well.

Zeti: A situational character for Unyasi threads. Unyasi isn't much of a popular RP locale yet, so I don't really use her much at all.

Derpy Hooves: My personal wildcard. Maybe she saves the day. Maybe she ruins it. Who knows? I don't think Derpy needs to be a particularly deep character, so I have no character arc in mind for her whatsoever.

Mist Weaver: Only really exists for one RP thread only.

Barley Mayberry: I like the concept of a fake Sheriff of Trottingham, but thanks to low user investment in Trottingham and not RPing much in acting/theatre threads, I don't get around to using him much at all.

Flakey Shards: Ultimate child brat; love using her. I wonder what will make her change her spoiled ways.......

Ruffie: Basically a companion for QuickLime's Diamond Dog, who I haven't gotten around to RPing with yet. Ergo, I've never used him.

Flash Sentry: Apped him to have a cast character that did stuff for Twilight Sparkle. Somehow, he ended up the butt-monkey of the Royal Guard and possibly the love interest of fellow soldier Radiant Steel.

Snively: He needs more bonding time with his Queen.... and to make the lives of almost every other Hiveling complete misery.

Morianna Razorclaw: She's got a loyal niece, but she'd also like underlings who are either spies for Aquellia or criminals working to fund her covert spy activities. Could also use some heroic foes in the Aquellian government itself.

Whoo, this is a tough question despite the fact that I have only one character to date. Memory Lane is especially difficult to plan out because of how much he changed between his original design and his RP characterization on this forum.

He was originally created for a story idea that has since stalled horribly for numerous reasons, as an antagonist amusingly enough. He was never adopted in that canon, and made it to the School for Gifted Unicorns on an academic scholarship given to him because of his immense magical potential. He was obsessed with memories and history, constantly probing the recesses of his own mind and the minds of those close to him in a self-destructive search for his birth parents, and for the reason they gave him up when he was barely a year old. I never really determined what was going to happen with his character over the course of the story, sadly, and I think that draft of the idea is pretty much scrapped by now.

The retooling I created for World of Equestria is, in my opinion, far better than his original characterization. He retains his key traits while staying much more within the tone of the world he comes from, and he's a much better pony for it: instead of obsessing over his own past, he's looking towards his future- towards making it something worth recording for posterity.

In this canon, he's already taken a big step towards his goal by writing "In The Light of Her Majesty," his first attempt at a personal recollection; the book's success proves that he can accomplish the literary part of his goal. Next on his list would be to "seek out" the world, in a sense: to explore and to experience what the world has to offer. For now, he's sticking mostly close to home- but once he graduates from the School, he intends to put the impressive nest egg of bits he's acquired from book royalties and unspent scholarships to use and venture out beyond the borders of Equestria into Aquellia, Unyasi, and the undiscovered countries of the Crystal Empire.
